Demonology 101: the Felhunter

For today, we'll take a look at my personal favorite, the Felhunter. I love the Felhunter because its cute, scaly, and eats my opponent's buffs and locks them out of magical schools. Out of all the demons -- with the exception of the Succubus -- Warlocks get the most benefit from micromanaging a Felhunter. This demon changes the most significantly in Wrath owing to a few things. The bad news first: currently in Beta, Felhunters no longer confer Paranoia, so in Wrath you'll actually get stun-locked by surprise instead of seeing it coming and not being able to do anything about it anyway. It also loses Tainted Blood, which won't be missed because a Felhunter with a Rogue or Warrior on it is going to die, -475 attack power notwithstanding.
Now for the good news. Felhunters now have a passive, raid-wide buff called Fel Intelligence, which increases party and raid members' Intellect by 48 and Spirit by 64. Neither buff is as strong as the individual buffs of Arcane Brilliance and Divine Spirit, and do not stack with them. On the other hand, it's an excellent group buff that helps in parties and when solo, although Warlocks have yet to see more gains from Spirit aside from better Life Taps. [EDIT: Oops, I forgot about Fel Armor. Cut me some slack, though! It's not like Warlocks ever pursued Spirit before...] This means that Felhunters will actually be more useful in PvE while retaining PvP viability thanks to Devour Magic and Spell Lock.
Felhunters also gain a new offensive ability called Shadow Bite, an attack which scales with the number of DoTs you have on the target. Get the picture yet? With the new direction Blizzard is taking in Wrath, the Felhunter is shaping up to be the Affliction Warlock's pet. This is reaffirmed by the Improved Felhunter talent which is deep into the Affliction tree. This means that aside from the group buff, Affliction Warlocks get a pet that can do DPS that scales with the Warlock's playing style. While this is awesome in itself and will finally see Felhunters brought out in instances, the greater applications lie elsewhere in the Affliction tree.
You see, Improved Felhunter guarantees a constant stream of mana for the Felhunter, making it an ideal target for the new and improved Dark Pact, which is an instant mana gain of at least 1400 that scales with spell damage. I haven't done the numbers, but Felhunters are now competitive with Imps as mana batteries for Dark Pact Warlocks. In fact, Felhunters get the edge because they can -- or actually need to -- attack while acting as mana batteries whereas Imps must be set to passive. All demons also receive the passive Avoidance, which increases pet survivability in raids.
Affliction Warlocks can opt to take points in Demonology for Fel Vitality and the more accessible Soul Link, allowing the Warlock to go SL/SL while going deeper into Affliction for Unstable Affliction and Haunt at the expense of Demonic Resilience. The itemization for Wrath seems to hurt Warlocks because Stamina for cloth will be somewhat homogenized, meaning the days of Warlocks having life equal to Warriors may be numbered.
In PvP, this means less Life Taps and more Dark Pacts, as well as more judicious use of Devour Magic. There's also a moderate bonus for keeping the pet on a target with DoTs and not merely a Fire-and-Forget pet sent to a caster. In PvE, this means that players will actually see Warlocks summoning a Felhunter in an instance and not get laughed out for using "the PvP pet". Slap on Glyph of Felhunter for good measure if you want, since a Felhunter's DPS actually scales. Good times.

Sounds rather awesome. My lock's only 52 at the minute, but I've been wanting to use my puppy more, but get berated for using it out of PvP. Wrath can't come sooon enough for 'Lock's now. The new Meta changes, always instant Corruption, now this... I

I'm anxious to see how this turns out. The fact that the Imp can stay phased and never take any damage guarantees a mana battery for the entire boss fight. But that avoidance ability looks somewhat promising.

what about champoin of the naruu or hand of adal titles
will they be around? im stilly workin on my trials...kek
Akussa Sep 10th 2008 7:54PM
As it's been said numerous times in a number of places, those particular titles will no longer be attainable in WOTLK. I fail to see the relevance of that particular question to this particular article.
I have an affliction lock and I can't wait for these changes. They sound really neat and I'm interested to see how they play out in the grand scheme of things.

But we lose paranoia? Why? Was it that overpowered? I would like to have kept this ability so I have some sort of defense against rogues, but alas I will just have to deal with getting wtfpwnd quicker.
The other changes look fantastic! This will be my new pet for instances and soloing my way to 80. Fel bite will be interesting and I can't wait to put the Improved Felhunter talent into my spec. Add to that the SL component and we affliction locks might just get to kick some arse again :)

Yeah, W-T-F is up with losing paranoia? I guess warlocks weren't getting killed enough by rogues to begin with... As a person playing a human lock, blizz has now taken away my perception, and paranoia. Is Kalgan now playing a rogue or what?
Slayblaze Sep 10th 2008 11:40PM
Welllll, like was said...just because you were able to tell the stunlocked death from the rogue was coming a millisecond or three sooner with Paranoia active doesn't mean you were actually able to prevent it from happening. The end result was still the same 99.2% of the time: 1 dead Warlock.
No great loss.
Oneiroi Sep 11th 2008 11:22AM
Really Slay?
I sorta figured we could at least get off a curse and knock them out of hiding, ruining their opener.
Ikarus Sep 11th 2008 12:02PM
aren't rogues (at least 1 tree) getting the ability to Cheapshot even when unstealthed? paranoia wouldn't have helped you much anyway
Automod Sep 10th 2008 10:07PM
As an afflock I'm happy to see a new use for the fel hunter outside of pvp. I'm quite content with the loss of Paranoia in return for the new abilities. Shadow Bite is gonna be great for afflocks everywhere. As well an even better mana battery. We just gotta stay in a shaman's totem or a hunter's flare I guess :P

"...although Warlocks have yet to see more gains from Spirit aside from better Life Taps."
C'mon guys, you're better than this. Fel Armor allows 30% of your mana regen to continue while casting and adds 30% of your Spirit as spell damage (in addition to the base (180 at lvl 80). Granted, it's not huge, but it's close to what other classes get.
Plus, your pet gets a portion of your Spirit, so it's a slight boost to their mana regen, at least if they're not casting.
Zach Sep 10th 2008 10:08PM
Oh darnit. I missed that one. Thanks for reminding me, Muiran! Edited!
vazhkatsi Sep 11th 2008 1:08PM
Actually in the new beta version, you no longer get the mana regen with fel armor, instead we get the crappy 2% of health every 5
Diamornte Sep 10th 2008 9:57PM
What I really would have loved was a NEW pet!
Radiophonic Sep 10th 2008 11:19PM
Agreed

Nice change... although I can say that it will still be around 1 month away from the change in live realm...
One thing when versus Rogue, What can warlock do without our trusted "stealth detector"? Will there only a new skill call "Detect Stealth"?? like "Detect Invisible"??
I wonder what can we do when going against Rogues...
Other than to laugh at their "OH SOMEWHAT MESSUP" 51 talents...
Really... the skill mechanics of Murder Spree should belong to Shadow Dance, and vice versa...
Name-wise, the skill name "Hunger for Blood" fits into the Combat Tree... and "Murder Spree" sounds more Assassination...
Looks like the Rogue designer had a drink too many when designing the Rogue 51pts talent... oh well, at least we warlocks have something to laugh at when they own us...
Babar Sep 10th 2008 10:48PM
"Fel Armor allows 30% of your mana regen to continue while casting"
tooltip doesnt say so. is this confirmed?
Madrox Sep 10th 2008 10:57PM
warlock nerf imo /sigh... the loss of paranoia is detrimental vs. rogues and as a human the perception talent nerf is just jaw dropping. I dont have much trouble as is killing rogues. Don't get me wrong, they give me a run for my money. The only reason I beat them so much is because i can usually see them coming. And even then if i make one mistake or miss time my DC or trinket its over as they /faceroll to victory. I don't understand why they would kill non engineering stealth detection for clothies. I play a rogue and a lock, my only 2 70's, and i KNOW paranoia is balanced. If i am in arena and a lock targets me b4 i can open on him because of paranoia i can always vanish and negate even the most severe of stealth detection techniques (I.E. perception.) Afterwards pop preparation and my vanish is off cd if i need it again. But honestly w/ shadowstep that hardly is ever needed because i can pop it and open instantly. Why trade a valuable buff in pvp for a useless buff clearly designed for pve? If blizzard really wanted to make a warlocks pet more viable for pve why not give us another non talent gained pet? We havent received one of those since lvl 30 o.0! Im interested to see how lock vs rogue will play out in wotlk, as if it werent unbalanced enough (possible, just unbalanced.) Shadowbite looks pretty cool and im pleased to see alot of the other changes, but dont take my paranoia away =(
Radiophonic Sep 10th 2008 11:21PM
Better yet, I'd rather have the option to train Paranoia or Shadow Bite depending on my needs.
Malivick Sep 11th 2008 10:52AM
Paranoia is lame. Get over it. Felpup will be much better with the new abilities. I cant wait to get rid of the worthless imp and actually have a pet that can dps and get more than 1 darkpact from. If you want to kill rogues go 51pts demo and laugh as they try to stunlock you with 50% stun resist.
