New facial models in latest beta build aren't quite done

More realism and detail is always a good thing, and it's important to remember that we're still in beta -- there's no way those Gnome eyes will go live. Blizzard may even be updating the way the heads are put together as well, in order to make sure the new hairstyles all work the way they're meant to. The real challenge, however, will be making sure that the characters come out of this process looking the same way they did before -- if the textures look extremely different, you may end up logging into Wrath with a character you don't recognize.
Update: Don't panic -- Tigole says the facial model texture changes were "a development experiment," and these funny faces will never make the live realms.
Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

Ugh, I hope not... those were hideous faces. If that makes it to live I'm turning my helmet back on

I might be stuck between a rock and a hard place...

Oww, I feel your pain with that one... I at least have the Merciless Gladiator's helm, which merely has the wrong colored face for my draenei

Not to get off topic, but I take issue with one of your assumptions :
"More realism and detail is always a good thing,"
is not something I agree with. Aside from the necessary fantastic premise thing, attempts to be graphically accurate generally don't pan out well. I prefer the stylization of this game when compared to other games with their attempts at "realistic" graphics; the latter far too often fall into uncanny valley territory.

Agreed. The more cartoony graphics of WoW make it a more attractive game than AoC or EQ2 in a lot of ways. And they also make it run better on lower end computers, which is a nice bonus.

You make a good point. WoW's style is a strength, and it doesn't necessarily lend to realism. On the other hand, immovable hair and cloaks that seem nailed to your back can pull players out of the game. What I meant was just that we see a more realistic version of the stylistic characters.

so they're modeling human females after sketches found in the office of Michael Jackson's plastic surgeon?
zappo Sep 11th 2008 1:22PM
Man, they even messed up the PO'd human female look - and that fared the best after the stepford wife patch.
For people who choose characters for aesthetics (especially considering this is supposedly an RPG) this would be fairly upsetting. Way to late in the game to be messing around with this stuff imho, although I think I would prefer the old style eyes.

Oh my eyes, fortunatly it won't go live... thinking that my gnome female could look like the last gnome in the link... *shivers in horror*
Blackhorn Sep 11th 2008 1:49PM
Gee, I'm glad we have WoW Insider to provide us mindless panickers with nuggets of gold such as "These will never make the live realms" -- What.. was it the backward eyes that tipped you off?
Candina@WH Sep 11th 2008 1:55PM
If you read through the cited/linked article, there is a Tigole post referenced saying that it was a test of some sort, and has NO chance of going live.
So, much ado about nothing.

This is true, blue confirmed that they were simply testing the impact on patch size should they decide to update textures in the future. They have no intention of changing the textures.

it would be nice if the old races were updated. BE's and Dran's look so much better with the higher polygon count faces.
Beau Sep 11th 2008 2:51PM
So does this mean we are finally through with the pinheaded human females? Are their heads *finally* going to match the size of their bodies?!

Are they going to give the human females that shave they all need?
Oneiroi Sep 11th 2008 3:22PM
This is what I've been saying. They have talked about graphically updating some things, but I think the player models should be a priority, to at least the level they upgraded the Draenei and Blood Elves.

HATE.
Nyxtaru Sep 11th 2008 3:58PM
I logged onto Beta and it looks like my female night elf druid got whacked in the face with a brick. Its horrible. I HATE IT. I didnt choose this face, give me back what I had.
