PvE to PvP paid transfers now available
Ever since paid transfers were introduced, quite some time ago, there has been one very prominent restriction: no transfers from PvE servers to PvP servers. The general reason given for this is that it wouldn't be fair; people who level to 70 on a PvP server have a significantly harder time of it that people who do it on a PvE server, and letting people transfer from PvE to PvP is just going to encourage them to level where it's safe easy and then transfer to go around ganking and raiding and whatever else they want to do. Well, that restriction is lifted: paid transfers from PvE to PvP servers will be available from now on.
Blizzard's stated reason for this is that "providing a smooth and enjoyable experience for all players is always a priority for us," and that these transfers are being implemented "to provide players with more mobility and freedom to easily play with their friends." While these are valid reasons to a certain extent, I still think this will be pretty unpopular with players on PvP servers.

Levelling on a PVP server isn't that difficult anymore because there are so few people in Azeroth. People who REALLY wanted a PVP toon have almost certainly rolled one by now, but if more people want to play 70-80 on my server, fine by me. More buyers for my Wrath-ready auctions.
Chistoso Sep 11th 2008 2:38PM
Yes but come Wrath... everyone will be in Northrend and if you are on a PVP server that means there will be a load of PVP, but on a PVE server you could level all the way up to 80 without PVPing at all and then just transfer to a PVP server.

And so what do the PvErs accomplish, leveling faster?
The fact of the matter is that many people who transfer to PvP servers after leveling to 70/80 are going to be little more than free HKs for the experienced PvPers.
There are all manner of subtle but important measures experienced PvP players take to make certain they're always ready for an attack. You can't run your health/mana into the ground and expect to get away with it.
A lot of things that PvE players take for granted change completely on a PvP server. You can't simply go out and do dailies or farm materials, you're always under the threat of attack. You can't even meet outside of a raid without the potential for a brawl.
So sure, there's some advantage to be had leveling to 80 on a PvE server and then hopping over to a PvP one, but considering that you'll spend the next 1-2 years after that at 80, it's an extremely minor concern.

Hey, if I didn't want to PVP then I wouldn't be on this server. Anyone transferring should have the same perspective: bring it on.

@smurk: ganking != pvp
when I'm ganked by 3 rogues while i'm doing a quest in my resto spec/gear, I don't call that pvp.

It's not just about the PvE leveling.
Think about raiding progression, or grinding primals for gear, or rep....
At any moment you can get your time wasted by a person (or group of people) whose sole intent is to mess up your day. Sure, you could beat them if you're more skilled -- but that's still time not spent raiding/primal farming/rep grinding.
Ever participated in the epic "We're going to raid gank you midway down the water tunnel on your way to SSC?". Or the also-epic "we own this meeting stone, too bad for you"? How about the "no elemental plateau for joo!!!"? Or the "Haha, you just released from TK and are sitting in the GY after your wipefest because you released... Excellent ambush opportunity!"
I feel bad for the poor prot warriors, healers (particularly pre-30%-healing-to-damage), and other PvP server disadvantaged raiders who laboriously grinded for gear/mats/consumables, or were forced to respec to PvP and farm PvP gear just to be able to compete for PvE raiding progression on a PvP server.
PvP servers are more than just level inhibitors.

Complete bullshit. Glad warhammer is coming next week.
Warigami Sep 11th 2008 2:39PM
Don't let the door hit you on the way out...

RAGRRGBLAGH carebears can come to PvP servers now! I'm so angry RAWRR!!!
Actually, wait, it hurts no one in any way whatsoever. I guess I'm not angry.
Enjoy Warhammer. I hope it's awesome so you don't feel the need to come back. :-D
Buckshot Sep 11th 2008 3:04PM
Actually, I have really been enjoying Warhammer, lots less kids, better pvp (much like DAoC or almost SWG), and no gnomes. I will be back next year when lich king releases, just to get the toons to 80 and arena.
WyrmKing Sep 11th 2008 3:16PM
Ummm I'm in the open beta for WAR and it's not that great. It's a good PvP game but not anything mind-blowing.
Duffy Sep 11th 2008 3:09PM
You mean in 3 months when WotLK releases.
Buckshot Sep 11th 2008 3:25PM
Actually last night on Thunderlord, one of the devs said that it would be Q1 next year, too many bugs and issues. I was hoping for Nov 4, but he said there is no way they can hit it. This may be rumor or bs, but he has been right in the past, so take it with a grain of salt.

About time!
Now to respec my Rogue to asshole spec
BanshihSWC Sep 11th 2008 2:55PM

Bobbo Sep 11th 2008 2:38PM

Chris Sep 11th 2008 2:39PM
you have to be shitting me. this came from the same people that invented the recent recruit-a-friend: not the game development team, the marketing team.
Joshie Love Sep 11th 2008 2:40PM
Lameeeeeee...
Mike Schramm Sep 11th 2008 2:41PM
I see this as a definite shot at Mythic for the Warhammer release next week. "Why play PvP on WAR when you can finally bring your Rogue over to a PvP server?"
