Three tips for the wacky world of AH pricing
I have a confession to make: I've been playing the AH pretty hard for a few weeks now (ever since I started grinding up to the 5000g for my epic, and yes I got it finally), and I've come up with a lot of good tips for you guys, but I've kept them to myself, because I was selfish and didn't want my sources of gold to dry up. But now, I've got pretty much all the gold I need, and I'm ready to bring these to the world. Lots of you will already know what I'm going to say here (some of you might even be angry that I'm telling everyone), but for those of you who haven't found these little holes in the AH, here you go.First of all: level up your First Aid to 325 right now, because I've got three words for you: Heavy Netherweave Bandage. Think all that they'll do is heal you? Think again -- they vendor in the game for a whopping 6g per stack, so every time you log on your AH alt, the first thing you should do is run to the Auctioneer and buy up all the Netherweave cloth you can find for less than 3g -- crafted up into bandages, each stack of cloth is worth at least that, so anything you buy for less than 3g (I've seen it as low as 1g 50s -- people are throwing away money) is pure profit. This is the biggest moneymaker I've found (you don't make much per stack, but after you've "processed" a few hundred stacks, the money adds up), and it made me regret selling Netherweave for anything less than 3g before I figured this out.
Second big tip: don't ever buy anything on the weekends. Ever. Prices soar on the weekends, so much so that you'll often be able to take advantage of huge bargains during the week, and then turn around and craft or just resell those items on the weekends, when everyone else is playing. I know you really, really want that Primal Air on Sunday so you can finish off your profession leveling, but wait three days -- by Wednesday, all of the AH sellers will have seen their auctions expired and will be ready to lower the price.
Finally: raw materials own all. The best thing professions in the game are for (not including Enchanting -- I believe that Disenchanting is the best money-making profession in the game, as even low level enchanting mats sell for lots on the weekends) is to make your own gear, since everyone and their brother has a guildie who can make them that BS chestplate or a leatherworking quiver. Costs of making items are negligible, but the costs of the raw items are where you'll make money. The one place crafting will help you is to make bigger and better raw items: I was able to buy up Knothide Leather Scraps like crazy on my realm's AH, and turn them into much more expensive Heavy Knothide Leather (although the stuff I could make with Heavy Knothide Leather barely sold for more than the mats -- I had to do a lot of price checking to make sure I wasn't overspending on things I couldn't sell later). Likewise, miners have it made, since people will pay more for bars than ores, even though the bars themselves are still raw mats. In short: use crafting to your advantage to make rarer raw materials, but don't bother crafting the actual items yourself if you want money -- people won't pay you to make something when their friend's alt will do it for them for free.
A lot of this stuff is common sense once you've been working with the AH for a while (and since every realm is different, working the AH on your own realm, day in and day out, is the best way to keep track of where prices are and what sells best). But just in case you haven't had the experience of squeezing a nice chunk of gold out of the AH yet, that's what I learned in my run up to an epic mount. Nowadays, I just do it by habit -- there's nothing I really need to buy anymore, and daily quests give me more gold than I really need. But there's a lot of fun to be had, and money to be made, in following the wacky world of AH pricing.

3g16 is the break even point for selling a stack of Netherweave Cloth on AH. Anything less and you would do better to simply turn it into bandages.

I do the Heavy Netherweave Bandage thing, too.
A couple of weeks ago a guy in SW said he was selling stacks of Netherweave cloth at 2g a stack. I told him I would buy as many as I could. He had 100 stacks, I only had enuf room in my inventory to make 20 stacks of Heavy Netherweave Bandages at a time, so I bought as many as I could, made them, and sold them. Then I saw he was still advertising to sell them. I told him if he would wait, I would buy all of them. He patiently waited for me, and I bought them all from him. It took around half an hour to make that many bandages, lol.

So this is why my stacks of Netherweave for 3g always get snapped up so quickly...crap.

You say it's common sense, but turning ores into bars is actually very counter-intuitive. Ores can be either smelted or prospected, and while you might make a bit of a profit in the convenience market (in my experience, bars rarely sell for more than ores), you lose out on the whole prospecting market.

Agree, I always check first, and rarely is the bar market better than the ore market. (Other than perhaps those ores which cannot be prospected).

I agree, I farm about 12 stacks of adamantite ore at a time in about 2.5 hours, and i find it MUCH more profitable to prospect it all for gems. It says rare gems are a 3% chance with adamantite but its closer to around 12-15% for me. Also if your smart enough to be a JC, you can make Brilliant Glass with the uncommon gems and have a small chance of an epic gem for a big bonus :)

Also forgot to add, I sometimes buy adamantite ore stacks in AH if they are around 25g each and I'm too lazy to mine. More likely then not, I will get atleast 1 rare, 4 uncommons and adamantite powder(usually merch since AH price is only a little higher) so I will almost always make money on them. These suggestions work for me, I've been steadily been mining a few times a week for the past month or 2 for the up coming xpac and have cleared my 15k gold mark.

yes I used to try to create felsteel bars, but really it is more cost effective to sell the fel iron ore, adamantite ore and the like. Let the one who wants it smelt it
Hudders Sep 12th 2008 4:01AM
It depends on the metal.
In my experience, you can turn a good profit at low levels by turning iron ore & iron bars into steel bars. I have a theory that this is because the average man on the street, (of Stormwind), doesn't know how to make steel and has never seen a steel ore vein...

what about the blacksmiths who aren't miners?!

I used to really love the AH pre-BC. I could spend forever there just waiting for something interesting to pop up, a world drop, exotic pets, interesting recipes, strange contraptions, cheap items to re-sell... etc.
I dunno, perhaps its just me, but its like... the FUN is gone from the Auction house. I have all the PVE purples I could ever want from dungeons and my full pvp set from battlegrounds. Theres nothing for me to really want (other than crafting materials) from the auction system.
I really hope they breathe some life into the AH in WOTLK. I also hope there will be some really neat world drops. I miss being excited to see what I'll find when I hit that search button. :(

Blizzard was forced to do this to combat gold farmers. Make most of the gear BoP and the only real purpose for gold is powerleveling professions and mount training. Daily quests are good enough for these tasks. Gold is pretty much useless these days after mount training.

true dat, TBC has just been a let down on a lot of things.
the world just seemed bigger before, and a lot of the magic of wow is gone for me =(

IMO the article leaves out one very crucial part of Auction House processing-- Auctioneer. Everything about the AH experience is made easier once Auctioneer is in the picture. That includes posting, reposting, price histories, undercuts, and more. In the past six months I made in excess of 300k gold on a crap econ server just Jewelcrafting. That kind of AH control would be almost impossible without Auctioneer to manage undercuts.
Ryan Sep 11th 2008 4:21PM
Ugh, please don't recommend this mod. It's freaking awful. Don't get me wrong, it can save you a lot of time if you keep it up to date, but more often than not people are lazy and don't keep it updates and it undercuts by so much that you end up losing out on a lot of profit (and annoying the hell out of those trying to sell in the same market).
Axxam Sep 11th 2008 4:37PM
I just use it to undercut the lowest price by showing me what the market is. I would never automate selling with it.
And usually i just vendor the bandages I get from cloth drops
Jack Spicer Sep 11th 2008 4:44PM
People are indeed lazy with Auctioneer.
I went in and changed it so that it undercuts the current lowest price on something by 0.01%.
Ed Sep 11th 2008 6:20PM
I used to use Auctioneer a lot, but when they released the "New, improved" version a few months back, I found the UI so annoying I dropped it. I miss the old Auctioneer though. :(
madgoat Sep 11th 2008 4:13PM
My realm is usually the opposite when it comes to metal vs ore. The ore (especially lower-level copper/tin/iron) sometimes go for more than the bars since the gems they prospect into are worth a pretty penny. Use Auctioneer Advanced to do all the heavy lifting: scan the AH a couple times a day for a week or so to build up a good database of prices and go from there. It will give you a break down of items and their expected prices to sell, disenchant, prospect, vendor and transform (e.g. lesser->greater planar essence to arbitrage those prices)
Moramor Sep 11th 2008 4:15PM
I have to dissagree about the weekends when it comes to certain craftable items. C rafters are getting very lazy, and at times the only time you will find an item or find it for a decent prices is on the weekend because either someone actually had time to make them and post them in AH, or someone is leveling, and the item will be there for lower prices. Shield spikes anyone? Go try and find one of those during the week.
