Breaking all the walls down
Blizzard really shocked us all yesterday with the PvE to PvP transfers -- we'd been told multiple times before that it just wasn't a possibility (and Blizzard even got in trouble for doing it for some of their friends). So a lot of players are wondering: just what other current taboos will Blizzard give up in the future, for either gameplay or marketing reasons? Cross region transfers is one idea that's come up on the forums, and Blizzard has (not surprisingly) turned it down, claiming that with the current architecture, it's not possible. Bringing one forum poster to respond that "we can expect to see it in about a year."Switching genders and factions of characters is another feature that Blizzard said will never be implemented, but of course after yesterday's news, who knows -- the last big feature that Blizzard has yet to add to the game is a brand new faction (the two expansions so far have given us new races and a new class), so if they do introduce a new faction, maybe they will allow us to fundamentally change our characters somehow. And the last bastion of change, the thing that Blizzard has implied that they'd never ever do, is allowing cross-faction communication or even grouping.
Which brings us back to some concerns from players yesterday -- the PvE-PvP gap was one of the things that made World of Warcraft stand out as a game, and by removing it, Blizzard has made their game less individual, and more homogeneous with everything else on the market. It seems unthinkable now that they'd ever allow Horde and Alliance to chat with each other or group together -- that war is what makes this Warcraft. But after yesterday, who knows what other walls Blizzard will be willing to remove to "provide players with more mobility and freedom to play with their friends"?

The simple truth is, Blizzard recently said that they were going to begin allowing these transfers, and up until now it's something they've opposed strongly. PvE -> PvP transfers were on their 'never list'. The change was highly unexpected and out of the blue.
We can talk about the likelihood of a lot of the other things that they've said will "never happen" making it to the game, but now that they've actually gone and done something they've said they would not do, it makes any of those other changes seem closer now than they did last week.
In short, if you've been pushing for a gender change option, you have a smaller hill to climb now than you did before.

(wtf happened to the rest of my comment?!)
Yes on a PvE server you can't get ganked, but frankly that's about it, PvP servers are a mixture of more fun and more frustration, I think all you learn in the 1-70 rush is how to escape more effectively :)
I would like to see a system where you could convert your character to the other faction, even if it meant re-rolling your characters race to preserve continuity, as I currently have a 65 belf pally rotting on a PvP server as I was abandoned by one group of friends, and another group re-rolled as ally on a different server...

Remember when each faction actually had an entire CLASS that the other faction didn't? Then along came those pesky new kids, and everything changed. They used to say alliance would never have shamans, and horde would never have paladins. That, to me, is the biggest indicator that any stance/policy can change at any time.

It seems to me this is just one of possibly a handful of changes WoW will have in order to help take away from Warhammer. If people on PvE servers really wanted to PvP, one option is going to WAR since it will have tons of it without the need of just doing arenas/battlegounds. By allowing PvE to PvP transfers, this will possibly keep some people who have lost the urge for the endgame and want to PvP from going to WAR, at least that was the first thought I had when I heard about this.

I've always thought that the hard line between Alliance and Horde was kind of lame, and with all the neutral factions in BC, it seemed to have outlived its usefulness.
Personally, I think the Eye of the Storm battleground should have been Aldor vs Scryer instead of Alliance vs Horde, which would have allowed limited cross-faction interaction, but would have at least introduced it. It also would have made EotS a much more compelling battleground than it is.

i think being able to talk to the other faction would be nice, just not in the battlegrounds.

Too lazy to read to see if this has already been said, but way back when... cross faction communication was possible. If nothing else, though /emote Hi, how are you today? kind of texts....
Beli Sep 12th 2008 2:28PM
Yes, the horde/alliance war is what made this Warcraft, as you said... however, wars pass and we've seen with the expansions the two groups working closer together than ever. I don't think it would be a horrible stretch of the imagination to enable grouping/talking between faction opposites in an expansion. The idea, of course, would be that those abilities would be learned at some point (level 80? 90? 100? who knows...) so your character gets to be involved in the cross-faction rivalry while leveling and eventually come to see eye to eye with the opposite side.

They let us Inspect the opposing faction, if they're/we're "friendly (like Shattrath, duh)". It's possible they could let us group up too, *as a World of Warcraft Insider employee said so before*.
Anaughtybear Sep 12th 2008 2:43PM
If they allowed cross-faction communication, Alliance kiddies would get ear-raped so badly they would run crying to momma, never play WoW again, and probably have nightmares for weeks.
Thorn Sep 12th 2008 2:49PM
Except I can think of a server or two where the opposite would be true. Pansy Hordies would whimper in fear of the kids coming in from Alliance trade chat.
oldwisemonk Sep 12th 2008 3:48PM
Sounds like a combination of Barrens chat and Trade chat to me. Nothing new here.
Axxam Sep 12th 2008 4:01PM
Well, if we had cross faction communication, we'd probably have to put up with mankrik's wife on the Alliance side too
Verit Sep 12th 2008 7:03PM
Eve online you can gank someone and you can message them to let them know how much they suck.
In turn after you pod them they can complain about your lack of honor to you.
sayling Sep 12th 2008 2:54PM
now they've allowed PvE - PvP, the sooner they introduce penalties for griefing and lowbie ganking the better
:sits back and waits for crap-talk from PvPers shouting reroll PvE, L2P and stop QQing: Yawn...
WitchDrAsh Sep 12th 2008 4:30PM
I agree and disagree, lowbie ganking is part of the experience, it sucks, but levelling with one eye over your shoulder is fun. However corpse camping needs a serious look at, especially for some of us Rogues who abuse stealth like crazy (ghosts near their corpse should have paranoia to see if some evil stinking rogue (like me) is sitting on their corpse invisible).
Axxam Sep 12th 2008 4:05PM
Personally I bet the next border to fall will be the cross faction. Enough people will complain that their friends are another faction and they should be allowed to switch instead of reroll.
The proposals of a "defection" quest is an intriguing one. Not one I would do I think, but it would be cool from a story perspective. I imagine the person would have to level their faction with the opposite side up from Neutral (I'd say Unfriendly to account for racism, but then you couldn't interact with vendors).
I doubt it would happen quite yet, but I bet that border will fall.
dean.speedway Sep 12th 2008 5:42PM
Great.... a bunch of mal-adjusts, fresh from their PvE server running around flexing their new muscles and trying ganking for the first time on my (pvp) server...
Most people seem to have gotten it out of their system over the last two years. Now a whole new batch........
WitchDrAsh Sep 12th 2008 6:30PM
I think you misunderstand, I welcome the PvE players to my PvP server, there are more players to stamp on, they haven't learnt caution over the last 70 levels, who else is easier to farm honor off, or simply kill for fun? Experienced PvP players or experienced PvE players?
Markainion Sep 12th 2008 7:02PM
I think blizzard decided to allow PVE to PVP transfers, to help balance factions population. There simple to many Horde PVP, and Alliance PVE. I play in both types of environments but as the minority in both sites. It ruins the game to have such a population unbalance, as 3 to 1 Horde advantage in PVP, or a 3 to 1 Alliance advantage in PVE. Even in PVE, the PVP objectives are almost entirely held buy the dominant faction. And with the new PVP quest in Outlands, even with WOW promising to help make up the different, by adding more support to the minority faction. It would take a massive effort to make up a 3 to 1 edge.
