Skill Mastery: Deep Freeze

I have to admit, when the three 51-point Mage talents were revealed, Deep Freeze was the one I was least excited about. In its initial form, the spell was 1.5 second cast, 5 second duration stun that only worked on frozen targets. Ok.../golfclap. I shelved the spell in the dark recesses of my brain and devoted most of my time to pleasant fantasies involving Arcane Barrage, Living Bomb, and a lot of Gnomes.
Then a funny thing happened. Over several new beta builds, the spell actually became good. When I finally got into the beta and was able to take the spell for a test-drive, I discovered it was very good. Not perfect, mind you, but highly effective.
Damage was added to the spell. High damage. Then the cast time was removed, making it instant. The spellpower coefficient remained what it had been when it had a 1.5 second cast. All of a sudden, Deep Freeze was an instant-cast nuke with a reasonable cooldown that also delivered a stun mechanic. Suddenly, the spell had become...well, pretty awesome, actually.
So how does it work in practice?
Not too shabby at all, to be honest. It's no Mirror Image, but what is?
The Frost tree has always been about control and high burst-damage. Two of the basic mechanics a Frost Mage must master are learning how best to keep opponents frozen or slowed, and how to effectively deliver a Shatter combo when the time is right.
Deep Freeze helps with both of these mechanics. The damage output of the spell makes it an attractive option for use at the end of a Shatter combo, and because the five-second stun also acts as an additional freeze effect--one you can't break with damage--it's perfect to provide additional control. The spellpower coefficient is respectable, scaling like a 1.5 second cast, benefiting from 42.9% of your spellpower. The damage of this spell compares favorably with a Frost Mage's other primary nukes, Frostbolt and Ice Lance (on frozen targets), and its mana cost is reasonable, so it's absolutely worth using.
It's designed for PvP utility, and it certainly delivers that. It won't add much to raiding DPS, and so is limited in that respect. It's currently bugged so that the two-second stun of an Impact proc overwrites the 5 second stun of the Deep Freeze, even if Impact procs on the Deep Freeze cast itself. This will have to be fixed, and I expect it will be before the spell goes live. The stun also seems to share diminishing returns with other stuns and freezes, which may limit its usefulness in Mage-Rogue Arena comps.
In essence, what we have here, Frost Mages, is an instant-cast, 5 second CC that does rock-solid damage and allows you to make your Shatter combos significantly longer. You'll kill faster and live longer with it than you did without it. It isn't flashy, but it's effective. And anything that keeps that Warrior and his dual-wielded giant rotating pain-saws of death away from you a little longer (and preferably after he's already blown his trinket) is something I think we can all agree is a very, very welcome addition to our repertoire.

Shhh... Nobody seems to realize that this is probably the best 51pt ability in the entire expansion. Between nova, fingers of frost, and frostbite your enemy will have a freeze effect at almost all times. 5 sec stun on 24 sec cooldown with 2-4k damage for reasonable mana? Damn.

Only for PvP (and maybe a bit of soloing).
Best in PvE? Nowai.

Finally I dont need a rogue's kidney shot to make a shatter combo work on a druid. The one thing Im not sure on though is how hard does deep freeze hit for and does it take the target out of frost nova? So can I use that then do 2x Shatter Combos?

Does Deep Freeze not break the frozen effect when it goes off? I know it shouldn't matter, since stun is vastly superior a simple freeze in most situations, but if this stops me from using Ice Lance then it could potentially lead to an overall drop in DPS.
Not that I have any math to back that up mind you; I just mean that it's a theoretical possibility.

This is not a problem, because Deep Freeze counts as its own freeze effect. The 5 second stun also considers the target frozen for the duration, with the added benefit of not being breakable on damage. Once you cast this, you're guaranteed 5 extra seconds of being able to spam Ice Lances, or chain together Frostbolt/Ice Lance combos. It really complements the mechanics the Frost tree already excels at.

I have loved this talent since I first saw it. Back then it was the ultimate stun sine it had NO COOLDOWN when it was first in the beta, making Mages the kings of Stunlock. From now on whenever I use Deep Freeze I will always hear Threepio saying "He's frozen in Carbonite!!!!" awesome.

It's the "Nerf everyone but buff the hell out of mages patch" lol QQ

Would Fingers of Frost enable you to cast Deep Freeze against a boss or not? Because if it does this would add a high damage instant cast into your spell cycle (vs spamming frost bolt) and should thereby add a large amount to your dps or am I mistaken. If I'm right or not you would have the option to cast Ice Lance but would the damage from Deep Freeze (if castble) again be higher?

I tried this yesterday in Old Strat and I can honestly say
yes Yes YES!!!!!

Holy shit this counts as a freeze? Prepare for uber-ice lance damage...
uncaringbear Sep 12th 2008 7:39PM
Will mages be the new rogues in WOTLK now? I can see people QQing now about being in a perpetual state of frozen, helplessly watching as the mage burn them down. Sound familiar?
ajpc Sep 12th 2008 9:04PM
a freeze affect that can't be broken.. and lasts for 5 seconds? /drool
stack up some haste gear to lower the global cooldown and unleash hell with those ice lances!
Max Sep 12th 2008 9:44PM

Leru Sep 13th 2008 7:41AM
I can see it on live. Will be only stun, no longer frozen. Wanna bet? :)
leafy Sep 13th 2008 8:46PM
I dont get why deep freeze is better than blast wave - which is similar damage, similar stun, but multiple targets and not only when they are frozen
i plan to adoid the 51pt talents and go deep frost but take blast wave in fire

It's actually a pretty good spell for PvE as well. I was on the PTR last night and decided to go with a PvP frost spec. Then there was a group wanting people for kara to try out the new skills, so I went along. On attunmen, I figured I would get beat by the arcane mage, or the rogue or hunter that was with us....I was wrong.
I did about 300 more dps than I normally do on live (1338 dps and top dmg) from Fingers of Frost proccing and being able to cast Deep Freeze (usually around 2.1-2.2k crits), along with the 1 time I actually noticed Brain Freeze proccing (I didn't have any mods so I probably missed quite a few procs, which would have shot my dps up even more).
It's definitely viable for people who want to stay frost and PvE
