Heirloom items are for leveling
So what are these items for? My interpretation is that they're largely to help your alts level, and to give you something to do with badges if you have too many on your mains. Although the stats do scale down when you equip them on lower-level characters, they're still quite powerful items, on par blues. And here's one thing that's reinforcing that impression: I've found four Heirloom shoulders so far that give +10% experience from killing monsters. This is a great idea. You know that anyone who has these shoulders has at least one character at level 80, so why not let them level 5% faster? (5% is based on an estimate of half of one's experience being from quests and half from mobs.)
There seems to be a set of +10% experience shoulders suitable for every class and spec. Armor type (leather/mail/plate) will vary as appropriate for the character you equip them on, as far as I can make out.
- Tattered Dreadmist Mantle
- Preened Ironfeather Shoulders
- Stained Shadowcraft Spaulders
- Champion Herod's Shoulder
- Mystical Pauldrons of the Elements
- Polished Spaulders of Valor
It's really nice to see old models return. I expect we'll see very many of these shoulders on sub-80 characters in LK. I'm excited to be able to level my characters that much faster; I've spent more than enough time in Azeroth at this point. As Zach pointed out, Heirloom gear puts the emphasis when leveling on getting levels; it discourages going into dungeons and pursuing drops. Not that I do that these days anyway.

This may put the nail in the coffin for going into lower lvl dungeons though.

Just wondering, when you send these items to an alt and they scale down, do they scale back up as your alt progresses levels?
badjoke Sep 13th 2008 5:14PM
I was wondering the same thing. You might get an upgrade say, at level 35 but by L38 the heirloom item could be an upgrade again. It'd be nice to hang on to these items forever.
GreatLich Sep 13th 2008 5:49PM
While it might not be obvious, basically Yes.
From what I gather these items "ding", if you will, every 10 levels.
So you might get upgrades inbetween, when you hit a milestone, say 40, your heirloom would upgrade itself to the lvl 40 version (from the lvl 30 one)
[disclaimer: the above is conjecture based on a blue post]

even thro i've had a shammy for 3 years i just never could get the element shoulders. im SO happy to see that model return.(i might just have to roll a new shammy just to use them:)

so we're going to be seeing lvl 1s running around with shoulders? and like delphionic said, will people just use these all the way to 80?
Kroq Sep 13th 2008 5:18PM
It's been confirmed by Blizz that these items will only update once every 10 levels, so level 1-9, 10-19, and so on.
This means that they will NOT be twink items like people where afraid off :)
Wabbajack Sep 13th 2008 5:40PM
It is said that they will be overpowered until lvl 10, NOT that they will only scale every 10 levels, i saw a 52-version-screenshot myself

The main problem I see with them is that the armor type doesn't change, so say, for example, I get the mail shoulders for my main, then I can only send them back to a level 1 warrior or paladin since no other class can wear mail until 40. The same goes for cloth...only a cloth wearing alt would benefit...it's still better than nothing, but not quite as extensible as it could be if the goal is to level alts other than the same class as one's main.
kasa Sep 13th 2008 5:32PM
He just said it does scale with the armour. .. You could buy Cloth for your mage then put it on your lvl 40 paladin and it would be plate...
southernoracle Sep 13th 2008 5:55PM
kasa is incorrect. The items will not change from cloth to plate. The CM said that plate items will scale down to mail and mail items will scale down to leather for characters under 40 since all of the classes that wear that type of armor (mail/plate) use the lower armor class before 40. A cloth item will be a cloth item on any class.
If you want to level a class that uses a different type of armor, you will need to purchase that type of armor and send it to them. Theoretically, you can use cloth armor on a paladin, but it would be severely lacking in armor and appropriate stats.

I saw one of the screenshots of plate shoulders on MMO Champion and it turns out the level 1 version is Mail, making it indeed scaleable to low level.
It will probably become Plate at 40
Fooliecoolie Sep 13th 2008 5:32PM
The plate shoulders are supposed to switch to mail for the low levels and I assume the mail revert back to leather for hunters and shamans

This is actually one of the coolest ideas Blizzard ever came up with.

I agree this is an awesome idea, but my only concern would be looking at the same exact gear for 80 levels. Maybe if they changed colors every time they scaled up level wise, but I doubt that would happen.
Lunati Sep 13th 2008 10:03PM
For some people, the similar appearance is a bonus, not a drawback. The rest of your gear still changes, but you get to focus on having one weapon slot worry free of upgrades, your trusty blade at your side all the way.
You can change your gear quite often regularly, the point of these is something that sticks, and you don't have to ever toss it aside, it'll always be useful, similar to pets. :)
Chukie Sep 13th 2008 5:43PM
The best part about these items imo is that 10% exp gain. It will really add up over time from 1-80 :) A nice reward for those at 80 without having to buy a second account.
Kevin Gass Sep 13th 2008 5:58PM
I have a question...Do Deathknights get some sort of "Heirloom" item, because in the WoW lore and a DK keeps his sword for life, he doesn't roll on the next best thing. They don't have to be heirloom items, but some sort of you're-stuck-with-it-for-better-or-for-worst weapon would be sweet.
RogueJedi86 Sep 13th 2008 6:37PM
The only reason DKs stick with their swords is because they ain't found a better one. Arthas would drop Frostmourne in a second if he could get Martin Thunder or some other superior weapon. :)
John Sep 13th 2008 6:26PM
Sweet, now my (warrior) bank alt will get cool looking gear that isn't grey and isnt cloth!
