The Light and How to Swing It: For the love of all that's Holy

The answer isn't a simple one. For one thing, Holy is still an incredibly powerful tree and Holy Paladins are still the best single target healers in the game, with Holy Lights critting for ludicrous amounts in the Wrath Beta. It is also now more capable offensively, with ranged Judgements, better coefficients, and a lowered cooldown on Holy Shock. Even then, there are many indications that Holy has fallen behind on many respects, and many Paladins are considering speccing Retribution or Protection because of it. That's not a good thing at all.
Mana regeneration
One of the biggest issues for me is that Holy has fallen behind on mana regeneration. With the changes to Judgements of the Wise, Retribution can actively regain mana stupendously. With the new Blessing of Sanctuary, a Protadin can reactively regain mana like a monster. This leaves Holy with the gimped Illumination, which works off crits which is only controllable through Divine Favor. A Holy Paladin's mana regeneration is based on RNG, which necessitates a high crit rating in order to proc.
The mana returned is also based on the cost of the spell as opposed to a percentage of total mana unlike Judgements of the Wise and Blessing of Sanctuary. Illumination needs to be seriously reworked in order to be competitive with the other trees' mana regeneration. Furthermore, in order for a Holy Paladin to regain mana, she needs to spend mana, which is counterintuitive to most mana regeneration mechanics and the end result isn't true mana gain but rather a mere mana rebate.
I know there's Divine Plea, reworked to cast in a pinch, but it's at Level 71, making it inaccessible Patch 3.0. Furthermore, it's like healing with Mortal Strike on the target. What's the point? In the context of Wrath, Illumination is no longer a viable mana management mechanic. It's a 5-point talent. With the way things are shaping up for the class, it's no longer worth it but Holy Paladins have nothing else.
Seals and Judgements
While I was thrilled at the fact that Holy Paladins could now use Judgements in instances and raids, it looks much better on paper than it does in practice. For one thing, Judgements in Wrath eat up the GCD, setting back critical healing time. Judgements of the Pure simply doesn't grant enough haste to make Judgements worth it in between casts, particularly when a target needs to be spammed with heals -- something that a Holy Paladin does a lot. Having to switch targets in order to judge also slows down reaction time unless you use mouseover healing or a targetoftarget macro. It's cumbersome to use because it requires swapping looks at an enemy and at healing targets.
Seals are still useless on Holy Paladins because Judging yields very poor results, specially with the spell damage coefficient nerf. Because Holy Paladins don't attack with a melee weapon, Seals are largely useless as a mechanic. This is a problem because Seals are a core class feature. Holy Paladins should be able to take advantage of a Seal even without attacking with a melee weapon.
The thing is, Seals and Judgements need to be a part of a Paladin's spell cycle. I know, up until Wrath, this wasn't even on the table for Holy Paladins. But it never made any sense to me how healing locked me out of the Seal system. First, Judgements of the Pure needs to be buffed or reworked to make it worth casting in between heals. Right now, Judgements break casting with the GCD and it creates problems. Personally, I think the idea behind the talent is great. But 10% haste simply isn't going to be worth it. Fixing this talent could be as simple as giving a massive haste bonus but for a shorter duration -- maybe 100% haste for a few seconds.
Seals need to be viable by granting a talent that gives the Holy Paladin a bonus for having a Seal up. Right now there's no real reason to have a Seal up. Again -- and I need to stress this -- Seals are a core class feature. If Paladins don't use Seals, they're locking out one whole aspect of the class. The only way for this to work is for the Holy Paladin to gain a passive benefit from Seals.
Flash of Light
Another problem with Holy is that Flash of Light has fallen behind as a healing option. It heals for too little against raid bosses and simply isn't going to keep targets alive in PvP when they have a Mortal Strike effect on them. Many talents in the Holy tree favor Holy Light such as Sanctified Light and Light's Grace. This makes Flash of Light an option purely because of its low cost. But because it gains no benefit to casting speed, it becomes unwieldy when spammed in succession.
Paladin healing, more than anything, is about spamming. Despite the possible inclusion of Holy Shock into the spell cycle -- which will still deplete mana faster than necessary -- Paladins will be spamming Holy Light and Flash of Light like crazy against raid bosses and even in Arenas. Flash of Light needs to benefit from spamming and get better crit coefficient. The Holy talents leave Flash of Light out in the cold. For a class that has only two real healing spells, that's not very pleasant.
Other talents
The problem with Holy right now is that there are a bunch of talents that just aren't attractive or fun. Take Blessed Hands, for example. We all know it's useful, but right now it's just sitting there in the tree not being synergistic with anything else. Then there's Pure of Heart, which is nice and all, but it's just boring. I appreciate that they buffed it to 50% from 15%, but just like Blessed Hands, it doesn't exactly work with anything else in the tree. Stray talents like these make the Holy tree feel incohesive and directionless.
There's Sacred Cleansing... which simply doesn't feel right. Anyone who's ever healed in an Arena will know that spamming Cleanse is a huge risk because it eats into the GCD and it's always a hard choice between Cleansing and healing. Furthermore, the stacks of debuffs and talented resistances to Dispel mechanics often makes Cleanse less effective than it should be. This deep Holy talent does nothing to address those issues.
Sacred Cleansing also doesn't work like most spells because it increases resistance. Blizzard has been moving away from resistance and towards effect duration reduction, so it's a strange spell right now. This is also one of those talents that don't feel cohesive because it affects just one spell and doesn't lend anything to the other Holy talents or spells.
Final thoughts
I love Holy. I think it's an amazing tree, and I truly enjoy the spec. The trouble is, the other two trees are more fun right now, and I've particularly been lost in the joys of Retribution. So much so that when I finally played around with Holy, I came to the sad realization of how far it had fallen behind. The encouraging thing is that Paladins have yet to see a proper second pass. With the amount of work done to the class, it's only fair to assume that balancing and tweaking it isn't a simple task.
Furthermore, Blizzard called out for feedback on the Holy tree, and players responded well. The developers have also responded very well to many concerns of the other classes, and there's no reason to think they won't be addressing critical issues with Holy. In fact, they hotfixed Judgements of the Wise in Retribution just to solve Retribution's poor mana management before a patch. There's still time to tweak the Holy tree, and from everything that I've seen throughout the Wrath development process, I am fairly confident that most, if not all, of these issues will be addressed before we see the expansion released. I know I sound hopeful, but hey, I play a Paladin. Hope is what I'm all about.

Well since any justification of not getting buffs gets people pissed off. I concur that all aspects of paladins is weak and they should get buffed repeatedly until they solo all content. Every damn class is bitching about how weak the class is, its all BS. Maybe people just suck... My main is a spriest, I don't care about losing our mana battery status, don't really care that we will never top dps charts, and don't really care that we aren't considered the best raid healers. But I am so damn sick of people whining that their class needs buffs.
Woolwort Sep 15th 2008 5:58PM
Wee need a seal that we dont release on target but can help the whole raid. A spell crit seal maybe? But the whole raid would receive the buff....Mages would love us.
Khanmora Sep 15th 2008 6:16PM
They are trying to move away from things like this wool. They don't want any one class or spec a must have for the raid, that's why you see buffs that previously only one class had (raid mana regen for spriests) being spread around (raid mana regen for ret pally and surv hunter).
redstar Sep 16th 2008 7:42PM
holy pallies are a hybrid class and thus should not heal as well as the main class. I hear this all the time. Well, fine let me heal as well as a resto shammy or even a druid witht he same mana utility and i will be very happy :) I am not seeing that yet. :(
Belisarius Sep 15th 2008 7:51PM
To the morons who bother posting rgarding ret pallies whiging about being able to dps, do you think 65% of the so called "pure dps" classes is fair? Hunter/Rogue/Lock 3300dps, mage near that, Warrior near that, dps Paladin tree 65% of the top 3 = lame. Our utility atm does not warrant that. If we can't dps with the best, why bother bringing a Ret pally at all? And really there isnt a reason, if you are a lucky Ret pally like me, who does perform very well at what I do, then you may be lucky you have open minded people in raid leadership. Even I would say presently, there is no reason to bring one. You have no idea what your talking about, nor about game fun for people who have expectations, your just whingers, and if your a not so good at playing your "pure dps" class, you should be replaced by a Ret pally, and that will be the case come Wrath, and that in my eyes is very very fair. Shadow Priests are in a similar boat imao, although they do a hell of a lot more for a raid than a Ret pally atm.

*tries to think of a way to fix most of the listed problems in one go*
Okay, make Judgements of the Pure allow Seal of Wisdom and Light to proc on heals and give the paladin's Judgements a scaling bonus to healing instead of the haste. That is a big boost to mana regen, gives a true purpose to Seals for a Holy paladin, makes Judgements of the Pure not suck, and is highly synergistic with Flash of Light, given that it is the FAST heal which means more chances for procs.
Doesn't help with the non-compelling talents, though I can suggest that Sacred Cleansing be completely changed to make Cleanse cure any three of the given types of ailments it can, instead of just one of each.
Aerei Sep 15th 2008 8:03PM
Oh, and I'm not in the Beta, so if anyone wants to actually suggest these, be my guest.
Khanmora Sep 15th 2008 10:47PM
Very nice ideas. I did post them for you too, with credit given.

Thanks Khanmora! :D Both for the compliment and for forwarding it onto the Beta forums. I hope it gets some notice.

"The trouble is, the other two trees are more fun right now" I think this sums things up pretty well from my experience on the PTR. It would be interesting to hear what people at level 80 like Jusk have to say about healing and soloing as a holy pally, but right now it just doesnt seem up to snuff. The other thing is that besides being "more fun" the other specs just seem to grind better. Obviously Ret is far and away more fun in this regard, but I noticed even when I was specced Prot I was doing more damage soloing than my holy build. I was maybe doing 50% of the damage in prot compared to Ret, but only about 35-40% specced as holy. And here's the kicker, my spellpower gear is far and away better than my prot gear and moderately better than my Ret gear.
What Jusk says about sacred shield makes me kind of have hope, but then it also kind of makes me cringe that all I will be doing is spamming FOL again. You think they could have given us a new healing spell, besides Beacon, cause otherwise we are basically just doing the same thing. Maybe if they made sacred shield apply to holy shock that would help. The problem with holy is that despite all the tweaks it still feels lackluster compared to some of the other fun toys prot and ret got.
Jyotai Sep 15th 2008 10:20PM
The problem with Holy Paladins is that it doesn't do any good to be the best single target healer if most of the content coming out now does multi-target damage.
Ensane Sep 15th 2008 11:47PM
personally i suggest that if Judgements of the Pure reduced the GCD of all judgements, to work like currently in live, on top of all the haste it would solve a couple problems like losing a heal time.
I think that would be a great idea and add to Judgements of the Pure.
What do you think?

Sometimes playing what is fun isn't viable to your guild, or your core group. Taking the high road and going Holy will pay off in the end.
Since BC we have been over shadowed by squishy CoH Priests' wearing dresses, and shamans because of heroism/totems (can’t bash droods, I got mad love for my tree hugg’n HoT deal’n hippie friends). We haven’t seen change, because we don’t marco QQ to end every sentence like Locks/Mages. We’re healers’ we don’t have time to complain, and don’t consider our Class/Spec weak (just a little, misunderstood). While everyone has forgotten who carried them through the Original Naxx, AQ40, and MC (fire res ftw). Just remember in the end, when you're starring down Arthas, you made it there by the perseverance and unique make up that is a Paladin. Don’t give up, Blizz will make it right, have Faith, yes pun intended.
Michael Sep 16th 2008 9:12AM
to Belisarius: If you can only do 65% of your pure dps class, then you really need to think about re-rolling. In our BT runs our ret paladin will be in the top 5 every time. Yes beating out mages rogues and locks. This is NOT in beta, this is live. And no our entire raid does not suck, its that our ret paladin knows how to play....
Zandrae Sep 16th 2008 8:08PM
You forgot to mention the whole fact that down ranking is no longer going to be possible, that holy light has a 30ish % base mana cost, and that at the high end a lot of paladins spam down ranked Holy Light instead of FoL.
We are not going to be able to do that anymore. We don't seem to getting any new healing spells to fill that gap.
There's also no hots and no aoe/multi target heals.
The holy tree is absolute garbage right now in contrast to Priest Holy, Resto Shamen, and Resto Druids. I'm seriously considering going into Ret to get sheath of light. Yes, I know, it's 43 talent points.

Dear Mr. Yonzon,
I want to know after almost a full month after your last post if this column is gone for good. I mean, I love Paladins and every day, I check for a new article in your column- but there is never any new material. I was wondering that if you are not writing a new column, then you should ask for submissions for people, like myself, who really really want to write a paladin column so we are represented here. I respect that you are very busy, but someone needs to do a paladin column if you cannot.
Sincerely,
Moar Barmu

Allright I don't usually post comments, and I didn't read ALL of them. But I'll just throw my opinion in here.
I've seen people mention meleeing the boss. That might work on attumen the horseman, but I'm a sunwell raider myself and in SWP there is no encounter which allows you to melee a boss.
I'll take the example of Brutallus. Basically what a holydin does on Brutallus atm is spam a downranked HL on whatever tank's tanking him. (my guild swaps tank every 3 meteor slashes, dno how other do it)
If I have to stop healing every 30 sec to judge, the tank is at risk. Why? because Brutallus can main hand hit for 8k damage. I can't afford to get my healing cut down by a divine plea, and if I can't downrank or chainpot I fear I'll have serious mana issues.
Many encounters are already pretty mana intense as it is. A paladin without a Spriest on Brutallus is basically not done. I'm using mana oils, restoration flasks and Zangarian sporefish to max out my regen and it's still very hard.
Same goes for Kalecgos, you get out of the demon zone and you need to start spamming the MT right away, you're not going to melee him or whatnot.
And from a PvP point of view, against many setups (like lock priest) all a paladin can do is cast holy shock and cleanse. I am happy with the less shock CD and the cleanse talent. But I don't think Beacon of Light is going to be viable considering its high mana cost and only situational use.
Sorry bout the long post :)

Think about it... all healers are hybrids in some way (Even priests have a dps spec.)
