Breakfast Topic: Back to square one

I mean, I know my CTRL-1 and my Aimed Shot, which was instinctive to me... but I fumbled around for my Scatter Shot, forgot which bars I had put my traps on, kept pulling aggro because I had forgotten to turn Growl on, and realized that I didn't have a single key bound to this character. As decent as I might have once been, I was now clumsy, slow, and had to -- shamefully -- click on my abilities. Whenever I had to feed my pet I needed to open my bags to select the food because I no longer had a macro for it. Whenever I pressed my mount key combo -- which was standard across my other characters -- I would Track Beasts instead. After two years of not playing a Hunter, I was back to being... a noob.
Have you ever had to start from square one? Are there characters you stopped playing for a long time and found that you'd forgotten how to play them? Or perhaps you took a long break from the game due to school or other RL concerns and started playing again only to get completely lost? I'm sure it's happened to all of us... right? Tell me I'm not the only noob in the house.

Rodrigo Sep 17th 2008 8:26AM
I feel you man....But it's not our fault! For some reason all of the paladins abilities have a glowing Hammer of some sort as their icon...

@ Rodrigo
No kidding! I had to just become a keybinding fool. I wouldn't even know how to play my pally if I had to click on icons.

Remember : the internet is serious business
I can read this just fine, but then I think the QQ'ers should go to another site.

Hehehe, I did this. The first character I started when WoW was released was a druid. Back then, druids sucked pretty hardcore, so I rerolled pally. My husband was playing horde when we started, but wanted to play more often with me so he took over the level 55 druid and played her up until level 62. Then he took a break from the game so I transferred her back to my account and began leveling her again. Holy cow has druid changed in the years since I had actively played her!

FYI if you go into your World of Warcraft\WTF\\ folder for your old realm, and copy your character folder over to your new realm, a lot of that data / addon configuration will copy over.

"World of Warcraft\WTF\(REALM)\" folder.

I don't know about noob hunter but noob writer? Yes.
Did you even bother proofreading this before you submitted it? As a random forum post or even a comment it's not so bad but as a blog to a website like WOW Insider it's very poorly written and unprofessional.
"It was one of the most excitement I've had about the game in a while."
...actually nevermind. There's too many to list without just copying and pasting the whole thing.

YES! How dare we be subjected to a fan blog that we willingly choose to read! HOW DARE THEY HAVE IMPROPER SPELLING AND GRAMMAR! OUTRAGE I SAY!

Look everyone, a Tin Pot Hitler.
Stronmar Sep 17th 2008 11:59AM
I agree with Arcaria about this. There's a difference between this site and others. The writers are expected to be better than a random site because they're handpicked. This blog was hard to read and should have at least been reread by the author.

i'm not a huge fan of tearing down someone for their spelling or writing "ability". its the interweb and it really doesn't need to be taken too serious.
however, even though the guy here might not have shown much tact he's certainly right about this article being teh suck.
it reads like a elementary school kid wrote it and over all its just painful. i mean if this is the best we can do here..... i don't know what i can say.
yikes.

@Acaria -
Absolutely fair enough. That's what I get for changing a sentence midway and forgetting to edit.
@Native -
It reads like an elementary school kid wrote it? Aside from the errant sentence that shifted thought midway, I'm not so sure. But I guess you're a regular Pulitzer-prize winner.

Good advice - LEARN your class without using macros. Shouldn't be such problems after a hiatus on playing the said class.
Gryphon Hall Sep 17th 2008 9:48AM
It's not the macros, it's not the add-ons; it's just that playing different classes, heck, even different builds of the same class is a different paradigm in terms of gauging range, muscle memory of which keys and buttons are pressed instinctively, how many spell or ability options are available, etc. It's even excacerbated when moving from one role to another (tank to healer, healer to dps, etc.).
In fact, add-ons and macros can help the transition to become easier... at least in my experience.
Zach Sep 17th 2008 11:41AM
I don't have many macros on my Hunter, except one... Feed Pet. Seriously. That spell needs to be changed. Right now when you activate it you'll need to select food in your bags for it to work. You NEED a macro to make it one click.
Axolotl Sep 17th 2008 8:23AM
It does give you an idea what it will be like starting at level 55: you have to (re)learn how to play a class.
I have only one level 70 (paladin) but i've created alts to cover all classes ... been a paladin too long, cause when i played my warrior for the first time after a long while, i went: "where's that bubble-button and why didn't I put it on this char ..."
Jesse Sep 17th 2008 8:36AM
I abandoned my 60 warrior on a PVE server when my RL friends convinced me to go raid with them on a PVP realm.
I've recently gone back to him to decide if he's worth moving to my current server and realized I had only 8 total keybinds, no macros, and virtually no UI. I'll enjoy pvping with him once I get everything set up, but I am NOT looking forward to the job.
I still remember how to play him, but I don't have the same instincts for the warrior class that I do with my mage, I tend to make poor snap decisions in a fight, unless I take the time to think about things, and I have to go looking for things like intercept and hamstring (he used to be a tank, not a ms/spamstring pvpwarr...)
I feel like I'm learning to warrior all over again...
