[UPDATE] Demonology 101: the Doomguard

Anyway, here we go. The Doomguard is the last demon we'll discuss on Demonology 101. Lazy Warlocks such as myself can luck out on a Doomguard with Curse of Doom, our favorite spell on Netherspite. It's a fairly low percentage to spawn one, and Curse of Doom needs to deliver the killing blow on the mob... which can be a long wait considering the curse only deals damage at the end of one minute.
[UPDATE: Curse of Doom has been revised to spawn a Doomguard 100% of the time if it delivers the killing blow! Ritual of Doom also no longer kills a player but damages them, apparently with a Curse of Doom-size damage spell. Doomguards remain enslaved for 15 minutes and disappear thereafter, eliminating the need to enslave.]
As you can see, it's not a particularly reliable or even sensible spell to begin with. On the other hand, Ritual of Doom is guaranteed to spawn a Doomguard, but it requires a Demonic Figurine and five people to complete. Oh, and one of the five people will die. It can even be you, the Warlock, so be sure to have Soulstone up. It's not an easy spell to cast, by any means, but the good news is that the Doomguard is a way better pet than the terribad Infernal. Just remember that if you do spawn one, it will be hostile towards you and will need to be enslaved.
It has great abilities like Rain of Fire, War Stomp, Cripple, and Dispel Magic. All of these abilities are fantastic for PvP except that it's complicated to bring a Doomguard into play, specially since Curse of Doom won't work on players. And even if it did, good luck on getting a one minute dispellable time bomb to deliver the killing blow. The Doomguard is easily the Warlock's most powerful pet, despite the fact that it doesn't benefit directly from any talents (similar to the Infernal) except for Improved Enslave Demon. In Wrath of the Lich King or Patch 3.0, the Doomguard will get more health, more mana, and... that's it. Eyonix is supposed to have mentioned that Blizzard would do something to make the Doomguard more useful but right now all we get is more health and mana.
The Doomguard is a great pet. It's fun to use -- the AoE stun on a 20 second timer should be well worth the price of admission (the AoE stun is the best thing about the Infernal, too). Unfortunately, it's simply too difficult to bring into play. You can curse gray mobs (it can still spawn a Doomguard) and wait for it to proc. But since it takes a full minute to work -- the spell's one minute cooldown prevents cursing multiple mobs -- that might take a while. So until Warlocks get a more reliable way to summon a Doomguard, Ritual of Doom only works best as the Azerothian version of Russian Roulette.

Ritual of Doom is great for those moments you are bored. Invite some unsuspecting people and have fun :)

i would imagine this would be awesome to try out in WSG?
just start summoning when you enter, people will click it not knowing wtf it is and CILLIT BANG! you have a doomguard.
now go out, smash face and have a whale of a time.

I finaly went and picked this up recently. Sadly, it doesn't seem to work in battlegrounds.

It DOES work in battlegrounds. A warlock summoned it when we were waiting for the Arathi Basin gates to open. I was the one who died but I resurrected in the nearby graveyard and was ready to go before the game started.

Before being forced to let go demonology for a more raid friendly spec i was used to use doomgards in instances. Mainly with friends because most players are just too dumb/afraid of breaks during fights.
Just the mass stun is incridible!!!
Tip1: Enslave about to run out? make your pet stay...walk a litle....release it and re-enslave...
Tip2: Stay away form the group (max range)...if it breaks 1: you will have more time for enslave 2: no one in the group will get stun or freak out.
Tip3: Dont Enslave more then 3 times....just dont...

I suggest following changes :
Summon Infernal :
(regents infernal stone )
1 second casting
Warlock channels black magic into an infernal stone placing it on the ground attracting after a delay of 0.5 an Infernal from the twisting nether .
The infernal falls from the sky dealing 200 fire damage (increased by warlock spell power) stunning all targets around the stone for 2 sec .
"More info : the warlock will have no control over the demon and the mechanism will work like the shaman summoned elements replacing the totem by an dark twisted infernal stone (stone animation close to a soul well)
another suggestion for doomgaurd is :
Doomguard can work by casting Ritual of soul ( warlock caster and 2 friends will kill 1 of the 3 and the sacrificed hero will continue to fight as a doomguard for 45sec)

I recall a fun boss fight where I got the killing blow with CoD and a Doom Guard spawned. I did not have enslave or banish on my bar so it managed to kill our whole party.

LOL!

Wow...Unlucky proc.

My old guild's first time successfully killing Kael'thas included an extra participant... A Doomguard spawned via a Curse of Doom on one of the weapons. It was insane. A random demon just popped up in the middle of a heavily choreographed fight. I started to burst out laughing at the ridiculousness of it all while one of the warlocks quickly enslaved our new friend and promptly sent it on a suicide run against Thaladred.
It was one of the single funniest moments in my old guild's time raiding and made a memorable first kill of a hard raid boss that much more memorable.

I had something similar happen during a trash pull in BT. I had a warlock alt that I was trying to gear out. We grabbed two packs of mobs to "speed things up" and I thought I'd be cool and toss CoD on all the mobs, just for kicks. I had never, despite many attempts, been able to spawn a Doomguard (even when grinding) ... low and behold ... TWO went off within 2 seconds of each other.
I enslaved one (enslave on my bar, don't ask me why) but the other got slap happy and got the killing blow on our MT because our MH was laughing his ass off in vent along with everyone else screaming "WTF IS THAT", "HAHA", and "OMG". It's truly amazing how many people have never seen this spell proc ...
Needless to say we wiped due to the chaos and if CoD shows up on any our wowstats reports, said caster loses more than just a 50 DKP minus =/

Nice story but try better next time. CoD has a 1 minute cooldown so you can't put it on more than one mob at a time.

Why is it your favourite spell for Netherspite? Are you joking, or does it do something I'm unaware of?
SkaVanker Sep 17th 2008 9:28PM
When you stand in Blue stream at netherspite you get a hefty spellpower boost....so you get a really big Curse of Doom "tick" 20k damge even up to 30k with full raidbuffs. (It cant crit, since it is technically a dot)

You should do a section on enslavable demons!
Want your very own Pit Lord? Grab Silroth from Netherstorm. He's a 69 elite, takes up 3/4 of your screen, and is great for farming. Just be sure his health is burned down before he breaks his chains, or you're dead.

This has just got the top spot on my "to do" list. Going to try that when I log on a little later. =)
Baluki Sep 17th 2008 5:11PM
Yea, it's too bad they haven't done anything to make the Doomguard and Infernal more viable. The fact that you can only get a Doomguard by killing a member of your party is kinda cool, lore-wise, but very irritating from a gameplay standpoint. It would be better if it gave the Warlock a rather hefty debuff for 5 minutes or something, like 25% less damage done by the lock.
Of course, it's still pretty fun to just let the thing run loose in the middle of the opponent's base in AV.
Milktub Sep 17th 2008 5:37PM
I'm a big fan of the Ritual of Doom during instances.
Lemons Sep 17th 2008 5:46PM
wow there have been a lot of these! you're just making demons up at this point :P
Remsaa Sep 18th 2008 11:33AM
We had a Doomguard spawn from fenstrider on a Vashj attempt a long while back ago. Needless to say it wiped the raid but nobody was upset just because of the pure awesomeness.
