BigRedKitty: Wolf, Bird of Prey, and Bear
Daniel Howell contributes BigRedKitty, a column with strategies, tips and tricks for and about the Hunter class, sprinkled with a healthy dose of completely improper, sometimes libelous, personal commentary.
If you liked Wolves before, you're going to like them in Wrath; there's really no change.
Is there a difference between a Bird of Prey and a Carrion Bird? You bet, and we'll tell you.
Bears, foshizzle. They've been here forever, but they... well, we'll let the movie speak for itself.
You are invited to download the YouTube version (65MB) of this movie here, and the full-sized version (218MB) here.
As always, a great big Thank You to the WoW Insider editors for allowing us to publish this movie both here and on our little blog at the same time!

Yeah, the bear pet tanking the Fel Reaver does a lot to speak for itself. I'm still hoping they'll decide to add Kodos or Clefthoofs to the list of tamable pets.
Raze Sep 18th 2008 2:20PM
No word on Spirit Beasts, yet, apparently.

Uhm, the fullsize movie link is going to rhino part 2 instead of the wolf/bird/bear one.
Ichthus Sep 18th 2008 2:24PM
Link should be here: http://www.bigredkitty.net/wp-content/movies/BRKThreePetsFull.mov

Just started a hunter a week ago. My plan is to hit 70 a week before wrath comes out, tame a bear, and tank instances all the way to 80.
Thanks BRK you have shown me the way of the hunter! :)

why does the bird of prey chirp like a cricket? doesn't exactly make you cower in fear...
Drotara Sep 18th 2008 3:13PM
No change to wolves? You mean it becoming a raid-wide 45 yard buff that affects melee and ranged AP?
Xino Sep 18th 2008 3:27PM
He probably made this before that was changed.
Drotara Sep 18th 2008 3:31PM
Probably.

Hunters are OP! (For solo PvE)
Good thing I play one.
Hombre Sep 18th 2008 3:35PM
Ehm, while you're showing hunter movies, how about the one where a hunter pet is gibbed in three second? It's all over the forums. Fun for hunters indeed.
Pifoah Sep 18th 2008 3:36PM
Tank normal instances? Group quest? Sure, why not!
Tank heroics or anything serious? Probably not.

As a hunter, I would find it ridiculously OP if our pets could tank heroics. Even being able to tank regular 5 man WOTLK bosses would be OP. I would rather see our pets have the capacity to more effectively off-tank, as an additional form of CC.

yeah, birds that don't look like ass. Eagles FTW (though Owls were ok).

AH!! Finally the bear is getting the love it deserves in my book....I tamed one at lvl 10 because that's what the Dwarf in the opening cinematic had...lol

How do I get that yummy 1190 mend pet? Got my Tenacity pet out on PTR atm (a Croc, but I think it's all the same) with 2 points in Blood of the Rhino.
I am Surv spec and not BM atm, but that 10% extra from Spirit bond doesn't seem enough to count for my tick being only 665. What have I missed? Is there a higher rank of Mend pet in-game for WotlK beta? (I'm using rank 8 btw).
Thx for tips and de-noobifying where required.
Druanna Sep 24th 2008 5:19PM
If you dive down a little into BM, there is an Improved Mend Pet. Reduces the mana cost a bit and pumps more green goodness into your pet.
Zub Sep 25th 2008 2:24AM
Thanks so much for your reply Druanna. You are awesomesauce!
I thought that Imp mend pet only reduced mana cost and gave chance to remove debuffs. I'll take your word for it though and try it out :)
Zub Sep 26th 2008 11:41PM
Nope, I just can't pull off 1190 mend pet ticks. 798 is all I can get and I am testing 61 pt BM (lol) to ensure I don't miss out on anything. Tried with Croc, Bear, Ape and all the same.
Edit! - Well as I was typing I went over to Wowhead and they now list extra ranks of mend pet including rank 9 at level 74. So mystery solved, yay!

That "wolf" is the scourge hound from the DK starting area. Where can I find it out in the real (beta) world? Love the appearance, even though I'm not hot on wolves whatsoever.
