Wrath CE sold out at Gamestop, Amazon
Gamestop employees got a memo yesterday that preorders of the Wrath of the Lich King Collector's Edition may have reached their limit, and we've just called and confirmed that -- the Collector's Edition is sold out already at Gamestop. Looks like Amazon also has also taken down their preorders, instead offering a signup to be notified "when this item becomes available." The thing has only been on sale for two days, and already it seems many retails have run out of their listed units -- in fact, Gamestop told their employees that they may not even have been able to fulfill all the orders taken so far.Of course, we're still talking preorders here -- just because they got reserved doesn't mean that they'll all be sold, so there's still a chance that you could get one at release (Gamestop, we believe, will hold reserves for 24-48 hours after release, and then sell them first-come, first-serve). And there's a chance that Blizzard could put a larger order in (since the game hasn't gone gold yet, the sets aren't even manufactured yet), which would mean more preorders would be available.
But on the other hand, Blizzard has always wanted the Collector's Editions to be limited, and the guys at Gamestop assured us that there were still plenty of regular copies to reserve. It's hard to believe the CE could be completely sold out in just two days, two months ahead of the actual release, but it's clear that Wrath is going to be one of Blizzard's biggest releases ever.
Update: And now, for some reason, it looks like preorders are back up. Either Blizzard decided to make more or Gamestop figured out how they could sell more, so if you want to get one, better order it quick.

Bah....
I wanted to preorder this one so I could get it at midnight... but I guess I won't be able to...
Then again when Burning Crusade's Collectors was all sold out, and I walked into Wal-Mart and picked one up off a skid of at least 40.
I guess it's Walmart for me again...

I'm not at all surprised. The CE for BC sold out pretty quickly as well. In fact I missed getting a preorder because I was too slow.

I tried to Pre-order this months ago and they wouldn't let me. They call me Tuesday to say I can upgrade to the CE and when I go in to switch my pre-order (which I couldn't do over the phone) they say they're sold out. Screw You Gamestop!!!
Just sayin'... :)

I ordered one from both ... I'm bound to get at least one, if not ... I'll stab.

None of the UK suppliers are offering the CE at all. Does anybody know if it will actually be available here?

There will be one, its likely that stores are sorting out the numbers they are buying from Blizzard before putting them up for us to buy.

Please don't let this sway you either way - I promise you will likely be able to still get a pre-order in (or pick up a CE that day). They had the same song and dance surrounding the BC CE and they were stacked knee high at my local GameStop (So much so - that I bought a few extra copies thinking they would be hard to find).
Do a search on eBay for BC CE's and you'll find they are worth, and new at that, less than $30. Does that sound like a collector's item to you. Please don't buy the hype - if you truly want a CE - you'll get one easily. They've made plenty of those stupid boxes to serve everyone two fold.

Adorable is right on - this is nothing but hype. I was able to get a Collector's Edition the night of release with TBC, and even if there is an initial sell-through, I saw them knee-high at every retailer for a good 3-4 weeks after TBC was released. It's in Blizzard's best interest to fill every order available as CE; it's an extra $30 per copy to their bottom line. Minor effort on their part and they can laugh all the way to the bank.
GameStop did this last time around and there were more than enough. I'm sure they eventually sold out, but this pre-order mass-hysteria is weaksauce. But then again, we're talking about GameStop here too...

I agree with Adorable as well. It's hard not feel panicky but I saw Collector's Editions out for BC quite some time after release. As a matter of fact, I bought the regular version of TBC when it came out, but I picked up a CE for my son 2 months after release when it was sitting on a shelf at Best Buy.

I reserved mine the day it was announced, though I'm still not sure I'm happy with Amazon's delivery date of the 17th. I guess I'll just kick around the old world doing achievements for those 4 days that everyone else is running around Northrend.

Best Buy sold preorders of TBC CE and have yet to put WotLK CE up for presale, so there's still that option.

Asked the manager at my local BestBuy... He said they weren't planning on taking pre-orders on the collector's edition. Ever. He also said that he was told to expect to have enough such that people wouldn't have to worry about getting one if they wanted it.
It certainly seems like Blizzard intends on pumping things out until they've flushed out all the suckers (like me) willing to pay $30 for a non-combat pet. It's a "Collector's" edition, *not* a "Limited" edition.
Adorable1 Sep 18th 2008 2:47PM
In other words - the only collector's edition of this game that exists is the one from the original World of Warcraft (before they knew it was a cash cow and they actually made a limited number).
doug Sep 18th 2008 2:50PM
They did this same thing with Burning Crusade. They have no idea how many collector's editions they're getting at this point, so they just put it up, and take it down to stoke the fires.
If you go to Target or Wal-Mart release day, the places that don't take pre-orders will have them just sitting there.
Don't go to Gamestop. Ever.

Blizzard knows how to hype things up. Living in So. Cal. when BC came out, they had all those special signings at a couple locations. The local Fry's Electronics had so many, they didn't care if people bought multiple copies of the CE. Got like 4 signed by ~80 developers and the like that night and then saw a couple more pallets there for the next few weeks
Netherscourge Sep 18th 2008 2:52PM
Damn - glad I pre-ordered 2 days ago :)
