Just a thought about the source of his powers, or at least his undead condition. He was in Southshore around the time Kel'Thuzad was forming the Cult of the Damned and starting to make their move. What if Stalvan was somehow exposed to the plague while he was up north? Maybe an early version that acted more slowly than what was used later on the grain. There is nothing that says his appearance in Southshore was when he was first leaving for school in Stormwind. The coin suggests that he went to Dalaran prior to his mass murder spree. And even without the coin, the fact its moved into the territory of being considered a legend seems to indicate it happened some time ago. The fact the family's estate was still being liquidated might simply mean it was a really, really big estate to be dealt with.So anyway, what if he got himself infected with the plague, went home, committed his infamous act and headed to Duskwood, where the plague finally kicked in and turned him into one of the undead. Its wouldn't have been practical for a lone undead to travel north and hook up with the Scourge, so he was left there to terrorize Duskwood. Or just hang out in his cabin and wait until the Scourge victoriously marched through Stormwind. Whatver. When the Lich King started to loose power, he might have regained his own will like the Forsaken, at which point he'd continue his old life's obsession with Tilloa, perhaps kidnapping local children as substitues. The ghosts you meet along the chain are just the souls of his victims acting all angry and vengeful and such. Alternatively, he might have hooked up with Kel'Thazad himself while in Southshore (After all, the pre-lich Kel was wandering around town while Stalvan was there.) joined the Cult of the Damned and was taught how to create and/or control the undead and such. Maybe he took a short trip to Scholomance or something. He then headed south, killed, fled, maybe tried to turn himself into a lich (unsuccessfully one would assume as he's only a normal undead) or otherwise died and was reanimated and continued to be obsessed with young girls that remind him of Tilloa.Anyway, those are a couple theories that could plug at least a few of the plot holes.

You know, that would make a lot of sense, either explanation (I prefer the plague one - the WCIII scenes indicate that the plague could easily take some time take effect. In any case, awesome article. KYL is by far the best WI column, except perhaps for AB.
