Inscription gets researching recipes in build 8970
In the small patch that was applied to the Beta servers last night, there were a few Inscription tweaks. Of course there were some minor tweaks to various class glyphs, but the most interesting change came in the form of 2 new recipes: Minor Inscription Research and Northrend Inscription Research. The former creates items that may teach you a new minor glyph, while the latter creates items that may teach you a new major glyph. Minor Inscription Research looks to be a very cheap spell, using the basic Moonglow Ink, while Northrend Inscription Research is a little more expensive, requiring Ink of the Sea and Snowfall Ink, both of which are created with pigments made from milling Northrend herbs. Both abilities also have a 20 hour cooldown, so no spamming them to collect all the glyphs even if you do lay in a massive stockpile of ink and parchment.
It's sort of like the old spell research for casters from Everquest combined with the alchemy discovery system. Of course, you don't have to gather rare drops like with research, and in theory, you won't have to make hundreds of items hoping for a discovery like discovery.
The type and caliber of the glyphs to be discovered this way is still unknown. If they turn out to be some of the better or more desirable recipes, though, it should certainly give Inscriptionists a good cash flow, as not everyone will know the glyph in question. The 20 hour cooldown and the uncommon pigments needed for the Northrend recipe should add to this is well. It's an intriguing new mechanic for the class, and we'll be interested to see how well it fares. As long as the discovery rate of unique glyphs is relatively high, it should do well enough.

I think the items used in the research should be hard to find, but not a money grind or a killing grind (maybe the inks, and then a special BoP reagent from a rare mob that you might only come across every few days).
I guess I don't like the idea of doing your "daily research" every 20 hours, but I like randomly stumbling across a rare guy and being able to do your research then. Makes it seem more...special.

I've written up what I've discovered in the game so far:

I'm interested in any new information from the game itself (rather than the data files). The Inscriber-only glyph discovered seem heavily bugged at the moment.

Ugh, I absolutely detest the Alchemy discovery system. I've yet to discover the flask versions of the various magic protection potions.

Ummm... because there aren't any?

The magic protection potion recipes are all drops from specific mobs, and their cauldrons are derived when you make the pots:

Umm you know what I meant. And I have those Protection potions wiseass.

Actually, no I don't.
If you meant cauldrons, they're totally different from flasks. The only similarity is both use the discovery system.
So really, when you said flask, cauldrons are really not the first thing that comes to mind.

They ought to add this kind of system to all the crafting professions. Either with unique items, or if they don't want to do that, how about make it teach you lower level recipes you don't know. I know most of my high level characters have a hand full of lower level recipes that they never got because they're world drops and either not worth buying or are being sold for inflated prices in the auction house.
While we're a it, replace the god awful alchemy discovery system with something like this. For some reason I've discovered most of the transmutes, but none of the potions, elixirs, or flasks. Its getting a bit frustrating.

It should be noted that this seems to be a way to discover new recipes for several professions in WotLK.
Alchemy seems to get a similar recipe, albeit on a 1 week cooldown (Northrend Alchemy Research). I also recall seeing another recipe of this sort on mmo-champion several days ago, but i can't recall which profession it covered.
This means discovering new recipes will be more controlled in the expansion, but it would be interesting to know if you will still be able to discover new recipes by grinding out known potions (and maybe glyphs).

Agreed with Ottmar. I'm pretty sure I saw a second profession that benefited from a new "research" ability as well, but I couldn't find it again. I guess it's possible we saw inscription, but if it was added to the beta last night then that isn't it. I saw the alchemy version (and whatever else I was looking at) a few days ago. Anyway, here's the alchemy link: (see bottom right)

(Seriously ... alchemy has a 7 day cooldown and inscription is 20 hours? Or maybe that will be adjusted to match later...)

So... I'm on the PTR and just learned a bunch of the new inscription recipes. Unfortunately none of them are ones I can skill up past 350 and there don't appear to be any buyable or dropped inscription recipes to learn. =P However, I was looking for this Minor Inscription Research in what I learned and I can't find it. According to WoWHead it is supposed to be available somewhere around skill 125? But I can't find it on any trainer, in my spell book, in my Inscription list or even lying around on the ground somewhere next to a trainer. How do you learn this? Or is this only available in Northrend, despite the fact that it is a 125 level skill?

In the name of Tim Curry!
For the last time, PTR does not equal beta. They try to keep one more up to date than the other one then when they have enough updated they move it over to the other one. Can you guess which?
Grayclaw Sep 20th 2008 11:34PM
Hey Ed. I know that the PTR does not equal beta. However, the PTR build gets the SAME build number as the beta patch, and the same talent changes apply. Inscription is in the PTR and has been getting consistant updates with every build. I realize that something named "Northrend Inscription Research" is probably only in Beta. But something named "Minor Inscription Research" that can be learned before skill 375 is something that might be on the PTR. It wasn't an unreasonable question to ask if I was missing something with this one. If it's only currently on Beta, that's fine. I just wanted to know. =P

don't worry. I couldn't find it in the beta or the PTR.
