Ask a Lore Nerd: Portals, pandaren, and Jaina Proudmoore

Let's get this party started with Lionheart's question...
What is that barred off instance looking portal thing in Stormwind, by Old Town? Were the gates once open?
There are actually two of these in Stormwind. Neither of them were ever open, they're relics of unfinished projects. One is a closed off little guarded island in the Canals. That one was going to be the Stormwind Vault, probably a dungeon like Arcatraz or the upcoming Violet Hold in Dalaran. Probably.
There's also the barred off one at the end of the Canals, right down the way from that one. This is probably the one you're referring to, I'm going to guess? I don't think we've gotten a real answer on this was supposed to be, but it was probably going to be the portal to player housing. They actually did start work on player housing at one point, but never got far. There are relics of it in the game files. Half completed houses/structures, things like that. They all use the Stormwind motif for their appearance, and they would have to put it somewhere. Through this portal is a safe bet.

Jaina Proudmoore and Arthas. Any chance they'll hook up against in the future? What are the details of their history together?
...get back together? Good gosh I hope not. That's be messed up! I guess nothing is impossible, but I sincerely doubt this.
As for their history, it's not a very long or involved one. Essentially, Jaina is the daughter of Admiral Daelin Proudmoore, who was buddies with King Terenas of Lordaeron. Arthas was the Prince of Lordaeron. Jaina also wiggled her way into an apprenticeship under Archmage Antonidas, ruler of Dalaran. So the two of them we the shining stars of their kingdoms, and being in that sort of position just sort of led them to eachother.
Think of it as a Hollywood relationship. Two huge stars, common household names. Attractive, popular, probably pretty cool people. They're definitely going to hook up given the opportunity. And again like Hollywood relationships, everyone in the world knew about their fling pretty much immediately, or as fast as word travels. Their friends bugged them about it, their parents probably immediately tried to talk them into marrying eachother for political and social reasons, all eyes were on them. That sucks! So nothing major really came out of it. They had feelings for eachother, but they ultimately went and did their own thing. Having everyone watching your relationship really makes the whole thing hard.
Sean Riley asked...
Sports! RAAAR! Are orcs good at them? What SPORTS are played in Azeroth? What do the various races do to play SPORTS! (RARR!)
Do you count the arena as a sport? If so, there's that! Especially in Orcish culture. Beyond that, we don't really know. We can assume kids (and some adults) play some sports or games, because kids are kids and they'll always come up with something, and Leatherworkers can craft Heavy Leather Balls. I assume that the first person to make one of these made them to play a game, not not just to toss around waiting for their raid to start.
I sincerely doubt Azeroth has anything like sports leagues outside of what the Goblins pay people for, like the Arena. Competitive sports for entertainment is good for morale during war, but not when said war is on the brink of engulfing your entire world. People fit to play sports competitively are probably on the various fronts and battlefields.
I was going to embed the Sports! clip from Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! here to counter your Powerthirst reference, but I somehow feel it would be inappropriate.
IanC asked...
I don't "get" how there can be Forsaken Death Knights. Surely a Forsaken DK is just a human or high elf (or blood elf now of course) DK, overall, right?
They're more rotten. It's easier to accept something that still resembles what they should be. A guy with cold, pale skin walking up to me would be freaky, but tolerable if I was told he's super cool. If a guy missing hunks of flesh and his jaw walked up to me, I would probably vomit on my shoes.
Plus, in the case of the Death Knights we'll be playing in Wrath, a Forsaken Death Knight very well could have been a member of the Forsaken before (s)he became a Death Knight. The Death Knights of Acherus are mostly people who were cut down by the Scourge in the Plaguelands. A Forsaken could easily get gibbed, be pulled back into the fold of the Scourge, and then be released -again- under the proper circumstances.
Skone asked...
I remember the Panderans in Warcraft 3. I know they have their own place in Azeroth named Pandaria. Where is this place? I also know they have a hiding place in Stonetalon Mountains. Where is that, too?
Pandaren are largely a joke. Samwise Didier's nickname is 'Panda' and his alter ego reflects that. For fun, he started including them as easter eggs in the Warcraft games. There was a strong, positive fan reaction because Warcraft fans are nuts, so Chris Metzen wrote them into Warcraft. Again, a light hearted and silly thing. So do they exist in lore? Yeah, I guess they do. Will we ever know where Pandaria is, or their other settlements? No, probably not.
They use a line like "nobody has ever seen Pandaria but the Pandarens" when describing it. It's a pretty good "out." They don't need to show it to you and they probably don't want to, either. It's a nod to the fans. I don't think we'll see them in WoW, I don't think we'll ever know the location of Pandaria, but we'll see a few of them as easter eggs in Warcraft 4 or whatever.

The pandaren are supposed to live somewhere in the Stone Talon Mountains, and they have had a small presence in lore, befriending orcs, and are known for their beer, wielding spears, and drunken boxing.
Edboy Sep 21st 2008 9:30PM
I strongly support the "they're just an easter egg and have no actual hold on warcraft" theory because of how stupid Pandarens are in the first place.
Plus, the only reason moron fanboys want them in the game is because of a side story in Warcraft 3. Hell, you could play the whole thing without ever meeting the one Pandaren in there. They're largely a joke, much like the intelligence of most WoW players.
Fireflash38 Sep 21st 2008 9:39PM
@ Edboy,
Way to be a dick?
It is a more light-hearted part of the lore. If you are going to pull the whole "logical" view here, try to overlook everything but what irks you. There is so much in WC that is illogical, so claiming that is just silly.
Also, way to be "elitist" by insulting the average WoW players intelligence. Really, all kinds of people play this game, and such a statement only shows your ignorance.
Personally, I think Pandarens are fucking sweet, especially after playing them in DotA and Enfo's TS.
Edboy Sep 21st 2008 9:44PM
because it's fun
Jewbanks Sep 21st 2008 10:43PM
He didnt ask why
Edboy Sep 22nd 2008 12:11AM
Thank you for the correction, Jewie.
And thank all the lovely men and women folk here in this blog downrating stuff that seems offensive to them. You either hate the people who ask stupid questions, you are asking stupid questions, or you think you're a good little saint who is beyond hatred for those who do not wish to think for themselves (which, judging by the lemming style behavior of down ranking here, is a flat out lie.) Don't be all defensive about it.
And to elaborate, I'm not saying it's illogical to add Pandarens in WoW. I'm saying that it's stupid, I hate it, and only idiots would be for adding them in the game.
Yes, a vast majority of WoW players are morons. If you spent three minutes in PTR, you'd be very insulting about the whole player base too. You got your glyph idiots, you got your begging to know how to get to Northrend idiots, you got idiots asking for the quest to unlock Death Knights, you got idiots asking for the cost of mounts in this year's Brewfest, you got idiots who are whining about the paladin changes.
I get knocked down but I get up again, you're never going to keep me down. I get knock down but I get up again, you're never going to keep me down.

Obvious troll is obvious?
Seriously people, move along. Edboy is just desperate for attention.
WyrmKing Sep 22nd 2008 2:08PM
Edboy is definitely a dick. He's a dick to Megan Harris. He's just a a regular asshole.
And a side game like Warcraft III? Fuck you asshole. Warcraft III is a side game? If it wasn't for Warcraft III there wouldn't be a World of Warcraft dickhead.
Heck, if it weren't for Warcraft and Warcraft II, if it weren't for the RTS "side games". There wouldn't be a World of Warcraft.
God you're an asshole.
RogueJedi86 Sep 22nd 2008 3:04PM
WyrmKing:
He said a sidestory IN Warcraft 3, not that Warcraft 3 is a sidestory. Pandarens were definitely a sidestory in WC3. Albeit a very fun sidestory.
I'm not on Edboy's side about this, and he's definitely trolling, calling anyone who dislikes his trolling a "moron" and a "lemming" for voting him down. And for the record, the "lemmings following each other off cliffs to their deaths" is a myth. Way to follow all the other morons in a false belief, so to speak.

In the words of Mr. Burns
"Some men hunt for sport, others hunt for food."
I assume Hemet Nesingwary falls squarely in the former category.
Alex Ziebart Sep 21st 2008 8:39PM
This is true. I was mostly thinking of it in terms of things like Baseball and Basketball, but there's definitely hunting and all of that.
Tomah Sep 21st 2008 9:29PM
BATTLE BALL.
We don't know anything at all about it, other than that it exists, but BATTLE BALL.

Balius Sep 21st 2008 8:50PM
Hunting, formalized arenas and free-for-all arenas, rocket racing, competitive fishing.
The orcs have been a little busy to invent their own games, I think, but they watch and participate in the sports others make available.
Cowbane Sep 21st 2008 8:55PM
Psh, they play Football, duh, Death Football. Remember the credits to WCIII? not the frozen throne, just plain warcraft 3 credits. Death Football.

This is what Orcish Football would look like:

One thing thats been bothering me as of late is how the events in wow have evolved, well like u stoping kil'jaden and killing illidan or how the DK came to be how does this affect the overall story of wow? does the legion still have any influence in northrend? everything in wrath seems to marginalize all the events in outland just think about it the naru who are saposed to be gathering an army of the light to battle the legion seem to have no place in northrend but the dranai are involved just as much as any memeber of the hord or allience, also what role do the blood knights have there role seems less evident than the human paladins (witch i am one lol) even the dwarvain pallys seem to have no love but well i gess its just cause i havent played wrath and i dont know much about the nuances of the story but as a big fan of the stratigy games it was bothering me how they would impliment the story in a WCIV game.
well i didnt exactly word all that quite the way i was thinking it in my mind but i hope u guys can give me an answer, has blizzard mentioned anything about the stuff i talked about?
