Breakfast Topic: Steak on eggs
After posting two articles concerning mount-related issues yesterday (Engineering mounts in Wrath and the changes to the Brewfest ram/kodo), I went back to Blackrock Depths with a group to have another crack at everyone's newest best friend, Coren Direbrew. This time I was in the company of a half-crazed warlock determined to get both Brewfest mounts. He'd missed his chance at the ram last year and sworn up and down that it would never happen again, only to be aghast at Blizzard's decision to make both mounts a boss drop. To him, I imagine, it was time to knuckle down and show that ugly, yellow-bellied, boot-licking, random-number-generator just who was boss. However, as the day wore on, he realized that -- insulting the random number generator? Not a good idea.In the interest of preserving what little bag space I had left before patch 3.02 mercifully hits, I'd convinced myself that mounts were the ingame version of a used car; they got you from place to place a lot faster than you would have otherwise, and while they could be as flashy and rare as a 1964 Aston Martin DB5, they'd still do the exact same job if they were a 1994 Toyota Corolla, so what was the point of going nuts over them? In that vein I'd honestly told guildies that even if the Ashes of Al'ar had dropped, I wouldn't have rolled on them, as the convenience of swift flight form trumped anything that even the rarest mount could offer.
But after getting a surprise Swift White Hawkstrider on a heroic Magisters' Terrace, I'm starting to see where my insane warlock buddy is coming from. It's fun -- and a Tauren on an all-white-meat McNugget has the added attraction of looking hilariously stupid. I can't keep a straight face watching my main on her new mount; it's the perfect visual shorthand for "Not Serious." It's since occurred to me that people might be after particular mounts because -- role-playing or not -- on some level it's an expression of the character's personality, possibly more so once the character has the freedom to choose from an assortment of mounts. Certain mounts just seem to fit a toon better than others. Are you still working toward the mount that fits your main, do you already have it, or -- like my older self -- does mount choice really not matter to you?

As an RPer (and someone who is very much OCD! XD), mounts matter very, very much to me. I have a Tauren as my main, and I could *NOT* be happy with normal mounts. For my first, I ground up Org rep for a wolf. Then I decided I wanted the Black War Wolf, and did the grind of BGs. Then for an epic ground mount, I grinded Mag'har rep. And now for my epic *flight*, I ground up Cenarion Expedition. \:D/ So now she has 3 epic ground mounts (war wolf and two differently colored talbuks), and an epic flight mount that I still don't have money enough to ride on. @_@
The end.

I've done about 50 BRD's in the past day and have all the trinkets and the Kodo and Ram.
It'll drop eventually. Just keep at it.

its an interesting thing.
For example, my human mage, I am not at all interested in the Kodo.
BUT, on my dwarf warrior...oh yeah, for some reason, that toon on a Kodo just seems....natural.

I'm a bit of a mount fanatic myself(and had planned to get them all), unfortunately, I didn't find out until about level 35 or so that Tauren can't ride all the mounts. :(
I've got epic flight form, but I really wanted the Cenarion Hippogryph, so I ground all the way from mid-honored to exalted on every Coilfang Armament that popped up on the Auction House(took about a week and a half). Totally worth it.
I'm thinking of setting my sights on the Reins of the Raven Lord, because that mount is just so perfectly Druid.

I believe my Deathcharger from baron fits my Dwarf rogue perfectly

Roleplaying a Druid I find mounts extremly important. I now ride a Tan Talbuk, because it's the mount that currently looks most like a stag (I'm still crossing my fingers that that'll change with Wrath). I'm also not a big fan of flight form, since I RP a Druid of the Claw, and am therefore trying to grind rep to get that awesome looking hippogryph.

I am a mount nut. I have the Winterspring Frostsaber for one character, a talbuk for another, a ram for my night elf, and so on. I have leveled one of each race just so I'd be sure to have one of each racial mount in some form.

My goat Paladin rides a Black War Elekk. I suppose that fits his personality (I don't RP, but I generally feel like each of my characters has their own general personality). Really, REALLY want that Brewfest Kodo for him, but not because it fits his personality. It's just that kodos and elekks are the only mounts that fit Draenei well, and I'd like to have something different after using an elekk for so long.
I definitely want a Brewfest Ram for my low level Dwarf Warrior. I think of him as a booze lover (but not a drunk ; )), so the ram sounds perfect. Also planning on getting him the Brewmaster title. Hopefully he'll be max level by next year's fest so I can get 'im all his stuff!

I'm quite fond of my undead horse for my belf pala - the juxtaposition of an undead-fighting paladin riding around on a dead horse just makes the game for me...
Plus, it was easier to grind the rep (yes - I got a non-PVP version) than it was to find a group for the pala mount quest. Even at 70 she's still without...

My Undead Shadow Priest has a Netherdrake, which is perfect for him.
My Blood Elf Warlock is looking forward to grinding the Headless Horseman over Hallow's End to get his mount.

My tauren shammy has a black war raptor and I'm gonna try anzu for the raven lord soon :)

Some people just like to collect stuff... if it's there, I'll have one please.

Engineer rogue here,
I wish that the motorcycle was semi-exclusive to engineering, in that Engineers can just make it and use it, but non-engineers have to cast a spell that consumes 5k gold to learn the spell to use it. And the Engineer version looks cooler.
sephirah Sep 21st 2008 11:03AM
The bike is an engineering recipe BoE that don't need engineering to use.
Still want it engineering exclusive?
Unmei Sep 21st 2008 3:16PM
Dude.... its BoE think how much money you could charge people just to make or sell those.
For Engineers who couldn't share much of anything at all it's a godsend. Dont' sneeze on this gift.
Worcester Sep 25th 2008 1:23PM
The Motorcycle won't make us any money. Everyone will collect the mats and beg us to make it, offering a "good tip" which will amount to a few measly gold.
First, Engineering costs a lot to level, but these tips will never come close to making up that cost.
Second The Motorcycle is not consumable, therefore you only need to buy one per character. There will not be a lasting market for them.
Now I know that it's perceived that Engineers complain that the profession is a money-sink, and some might say that. However, we Engineers also have a distinct advantage in that most of our gadgets and gizmos are exclusive. So the money we spend enhances our characters and makes us unique.
The fact that the Motorcycle will be BoE and anyone can use it undermines the very thing that makes the Engineering money-sink worthwhile. Personally, I doubt I'll be making these for anyone but my friends.
I didn't roll Engineering to make money... I did it because I want to be an Engineer!

Special and unique boss drop mounts certainly add an elemental of personal feeling and customization to a character.
The problem I find...the terribly low drop rates. Ive done Kara weekly for 1 year and roughly 4 months now..and not once have I ever even seen midnight drop.
Im glad there are unique and fun mounts in the game - I just wish their drop rate wasnt so terrible that it takes an act of the Loot Gods to get one.
