Spiritual Guidance: The 20 - 40 grind

Every Sunday (usually), Spiritual Guidance will offer practical insight for priests of the holy profession. Your host is now Matt Low, the grand poobah of World of Matticus and a founder of PlusHeal, a new healing community for all restorative classes. For the next few weeks (unless it's something game breaking), Matt will do his best to guide you through the Priest leveling process!
Congratulations! You've made it past the initial hump of the first 20 levels in the game! Great job getting this far. I personally know of a few players who gave on the way to 20 because it was "too hard". If you're on a PvP server, break out the stress ball. Be prepared to get rocked on the road to end game (especially as a Priest).Location, location, location!
Where do you level at this point? When I finished wrapping up Loch Modan and Westfall, it made sense for me to hoof it all the way to Redridge Mountains and start all the quests in Lakeshire (as Alliance). Horde Priests will probably want to visit Stonetalon and Ashenvale before bouncing to Hillsbrad and Arathi Highlands. After that, I hopped down to Duskwood and bounced back and forth between that and Wetlands in order to push 30.
After that, a zone of interest is the race track in Thousand Noodles Needles. You can start leveling up with Nesingwary's quests in Stranglethorn. Arathi, Desolace, Hillsbrad and Alterac Mountains will be other level 30+ zones that you can cut through.
Highlights
And when you do push 30, look what you have access to! You can pick yourself a brand spankin' new mount to play with. Remember, as this is your first mount, don't expect to be kicking up dust and smoke and leaving opposing faction players in your dust.
Leveling Toys
Level 22: Perhaps the first fun spell Priests get is Mind Vision. Honestly, you're not going to get a whole lot of practical use. It does have near-unlimited range and it's great for finding the flag carrier in Warsong Gulch. Shadow also awards a new rank of Mind Blast whereas Holy offers more with new ranks of Smite, Resurrection, and Heal.
Level 24: We get access to Mana Burn! This is one of our staple PvP spells against casters at the end game level. For now, it won't serve much of a purpose as it's useless against mobs without mana. Even then, against mobs with mana, you're better off brute forcing them with Smite and other such spells. Holy Fire rank 2 is up for training from the Holy Tree. Won't useful yet until the expansion.
Level 26: Nothing special aside from new ranks for Flash Heal, Renew, and Shadow Word: Pain.
Level 28: A spell I failed to highlight is Mind Flay. Great spell for Shadow Priests everywhere. It's a channeling spell so you have to sit still while you use it. I suspect it's a primary form of DPS for our leveling Shadowy brethren. Regardless, rank 2 is right here for you to snap up.
Level 30: You get to buy a new mount! Whoo hoo! You also get your first AoE heal in the form of Prayer of Healing. It's a great spell to use if your entire party took a large hit. Expect to use it frequently in certain end game situations. Talents like Holy Reach and Healing Prayers will will affect both the range and the cost of the spell.
The Shadow tree gives you two new spells in the form of Mind Control certain mobs and even players. Although you can't use their spells and abilities, you can still throw them off of cliffs (very handy in Arathi Basin). The second spell you get is a protective ward called Shadow Protection which grants you the ability to partially or outright resist incoming Shadow based damage and effects.
Depending on how you talent, you can also snap up Divine Spirit which will help your mana regeneration rate slightly. It's not worth getting at this point, however.
Level 32: Abolish Disease another tool in our restorative arsenal. We can use it to get rid of certain diseases from players. Coupled with Dispel, the only types of debuffs we can't remove are curses and poisons.
Level 34: This level marks the last time we get to train Heal. It also marks the first time we get access to Levitate: A fun spell that lets us float off the ground.
Level 36: Your Dispel just got a whole lot more uber. Instead of removing 1 effect, now it will remove 2 effects at the same time. Otherwise, your Power Word: Fortitude and Shield gets a slight boost. Shadow side sees an increase to Mind Flay.
Level 38: Nothing flashy at level 38 except for updated versions of Flash Heal, Renew, and Smite.
Level 40: You've finally graduated to level 40. Now you can start using the big boy heal in the form of Greater Heal. Get ready to used this spell often as you progress throughout the game. Inner Fire, Mana Burn, and Shackle Undead get slightly stronger (and you are remembering to hit yourself with Inner Fire, right?). Mind Blast, Fade, and Prayer of Healing round out the rest of your upgrades (I guess there's Divine Spirit rank 2).
You're a little over the halfway mark. I've found the 40 – 60 grind to be the worse. Just hang in there. You're almost at the end.
Shameless blog plug
There's not a whole lot of Priest blogs out there and I pay a lot of close attention to the ones that are just starting out. With that, I wanted to point Priests to World of Snarkcraft. It's run by a pair of Blood Elf Priests (Joveta and Seri). For some quick highlights, read Jov's post on Priests and Wrath where she reassures everyone that it's not going to be that bad. Seri offers a lesson on Raid Guild Apping 101.

*cough* SHADOWFORM AT 40!
Eternalpayn Sep 21st 2008 9:21PM
Unless you level holy like I am on my little priest. Thanks for mentioning stonetalon! I forgot about it and I hate hillsbrad! My priest is 22 and it will probably get me up enough to skip hillsbrad completely.
Aerei Sep 21st 2008 10:24PM
Oh, certainly. I'm not saying everyone would or should level Shadow, but it's at least worth a mention.
Also, I should note that priests can't remove bleed effects and the rare few and highly situational debuffs that aren't classified at all. (Incidentally, there is one class that can remove bleed effects, paladins using Blessing/Hand of Protection, which I'm sure anyone who's been Garotted by Moroes and survived is thankful for, so I'm not nitpicking so much to mention it.)

You don't have to level as shadow.
If you don't level as shadow your doing it wrong.

Before a priest gets shadowform, a good holy smite build can actually do more dps than shadow.
This is because holy talents that increase damage are early in the tree, while shadow talents are more utility oriented early on. Take Holy spcialization (+ 5% crit),
divine fury (- 0.5 sec to cast smite), searing light (+ 10% dmg), and surge of light (random free smite to save mana). All of these combined do some pretty nice damage early on.
Of course damage on a smite priest levels off in the late 30s and shadow dmg really kicks in early in the 40s, so above 40ish, yeah go shadow for leveling.

Hunt around for the blog of Egotistical Priest for a great priest blog.
He's pretty fun, although vicious towards those priests who think they are paladins.

You know what else is a good priest blog? Dwarfpriest.com. In fact, I think these priest leveling posts are largely based on information from the leveling guide there: http://dwarfpriest.com/2007/12/16/leveling-guide-for-priests/

These guides are great, but FOR THE LOVE OF ELUNE, please give us some talent specs to help speed up downtime/dps, etc. If you're gonna talk about zones to be questing in, you might as well mention the talent choices per level.
It's a logical progression, imo!
Chris Anthony Sep 22nd 2008 9:43AM
I've got a couple posts about talent progression over at Lost in Translation: http://www.etherjammer.com/blog/?p=556 (for the current talents) and http://www.etherjammer.com/blog/?p=566 (for LK talents, although that predates the Great Racial Shakeup). I'll probably write a post today taking the racial-spell shuffle into account.

You mention Levitate, but it's more than just "A fun spell that lets us float off the ground." The slow fall effect is very handy, particularly at the later levels. It also lets you walk on water, which is nice for taking shortcuts.
Chris Anthony Sep 22nd 2008 11:31AM
One of my favorite uses of Levitate is as a self-monitor when I'm healing a group. My healing style has me paying attention to my groupmates' health bars *far* more than my own; I often don't notice when I have debuffs or take damage, because I'm so focused on the other players' health and debuffs (to see if I can Dispel or Abolish them). So I cast Levitate before a pull. Since the drop from the Levitate height to the ground changes my perspective significantly, I'll notice when I've taken damage (or when Levitate fades).
Also, it's great for when you accidentally use your ground mount and then run off the Aldor tier.

To Aerei who says priests can't remove bleeds.
FYI: REAL priest can do that :P
Stoneform
While active, grants immunity to Bleed, Poison, and Disease effects. In addition, Armor increases by 10%. Lasts 8 sec. - 3 min cooldown

Touche, my friend, touche. ;)

The key I find is that you shouldn't be afraid to move around. For (Alliance only) if you can delay going to Wetlands or RR until lvl 20, then you don't have to go to duskwood until around lvl 26/27 which makes it a lot easier..
Ofcourse its even easier if you can get in a few instance runs as well...factor in a couple of levels at least.
Loudfiero Sep 22nd 2008 6:58AM
Should have been mentioned in 1-20 but you can pick up a quest in Darnarsuss from the Ardent Dawn that gets you a 29 dps wand at lvl 16 with some +Shadow Damage and it lasts you until level 40 to up your DPS when you are out of mana...
Chris Anthony Sep 22nd 2008 12:47PM
I think you're talking about the Gravestone Scepter, which is a great wand, and is the first blue item some casters get. However, your description is a bit off. It's 29.0 DPS, grants +1 Spirit (so it's great for priests), and +5 Shadow Resistance, and is available via a quest that you can pick up at level 18 (not 16).
The wand is http://www.wowhead.com/?item=7001 , the Alliance quest is http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=1200 , and the Horde quest is http://www.wowhead.com/?quest=6561 .

Don't riding mounts come at 40? What's the deal here?
Chris Anthony Sep 22nd 2008 12:34PM
Nope, they've come at 30 since mid-July.

I started my priest a little less than a month ago, after levelling and abandoning lock after a few weeks of a playtime. I am now level 47, Disc/Holy (otherwise known as LOLSmite ;), playing Forsaken/Horde a couple of hours a day. I mostly solo, but ocasionally instance to get myself trained for the end-game objective of raid healing.
Random tips:
• Best *free* levelling guide is: http://allonblack.org/WoW/Braxis/. Use that together with QuestHelper, QuestGuru and LightHeaded.
• If you don't know want to play cookie cutter (like me), a good Disc/Holy build is here: www.wowwiki.com/Priest_builds#PvE_.22Discipline.22_Leveling_to_70_Alternative, though you need I wouldn't spend more more than 4 points in Shadow (for 80% Spirit Tap).
• Spend time customising your UI/creating macro lists for grinding/group healing. Worth 100% of time invested.
• Invest in the best wand available for your level. Open with Holy Fire, SW:P, Smite, and wand mobs to death.
Good luck :)
