WoW Insider currently looking to expand -- but not, as you might have guessed, in the writing category. We're blazing new trails and looking for an
addon developer to add to our staff for... well, an addon-related project! However, we can tell you that we're looking for someone who's able to commit a serious amount of time in the short-term to completing a large project and some amount of time over the long term to provide updates as needed. Think you have the coding skills to pay the bills? Then send an application to
apply@wow.com with the following information:
- What sort of gameplay experience you have. (We don't need a detailed resume of your work, but give us an idea of how much you play, what you play, and how you play. Raid? PvP? RP? Paladin? Priest? Warrior?)
- Your previous coding experience -- we're especially interested in any addons you've developed.
- How much time you'd be able to commit to working on our project (how many hours a week on average).
If you have any questions, please send them in to
apply@wow.com. Otherwise... what are you waiting for? E-mail us your applications! We'll be accepting applications for the rest of the week and hope to start contacting candidates the following week to talk details.

Seeing as this is for wow insider, is this a paid position or a "labor of love"?
Mike Schramm Sep 22nd 2008 5:05PM
All the positions at WoW Insider are paid, and this would be no exception.
Tekkub Sep 26th 2008 5:01AM
*cough*
You should mention that you are looking for more than just an addon here. Some people might be under the impression that all they need to know is lua...
Eddy Sep 22nd 2008 5:02PM
While you're at it, can you guys bribe someone to update the defunct WoW model viewer for mac?
If anyone knows of one that doesn't leave out 80% of models and actually renders BE/Draenei hair textures, please let me know at edughi at gmail.com . http://www.sailesha.com/wowmodelview/ does not work anymore.
vlad Sep 22nd 2008 5:23PM
just stick to what you do best. fluff articles and day late news.
anything your possibly planning has been done and better.
anything you do will be copied and done better.
chaud Sep 22nd 2008 5:27PM
Or maybe is already being done better.
;)
Jam Sep 22nd 2008 5:26PM
Hahaha - If I had to guess I would say one of there plans is some kind of 'WoWInsider News' addon for WoW so you can read articles inside the game or something like that.
Anyway I think they can do well with whatever it is so vlad gtfo ;)
jeremiah johnson Sep 22nd 2008 5:33PM
@Jam: That probably wouldn't be an addon worth writing, if WoW Lua behaves as I understand it.
... although.. if different players on a server had the addon, it could pull the latest news from whomever had the latest news and spread it around via in-game messages. Someone will have to update their messages file once in a while to bring new news items into the game, though, but once a single person has something no one else has, the addon can request (and serve) news items.

Vlad, you crazy little impaler you...
It seems you have some sort of personal vendetta against WoWInsider... or perhaps you do this to every site you have a login for? Either way, your trolling is impressively obvious to the point of painful.
Sure, WoWInsider has its faults, and sometimes it is just plain fun to point out the mistakes of others, but your song and dance is getting a bit old - we all know the chorus and the tune wasn't that catchy to begin with.
Ed (Sindarin, Hydraxis US) Sep 22nd 2008 6:25PM
I guess they could have a launcher that syncs the RSS feed automatically with the SavedVariables so you'd be guaranteed to have the latest news.
jbodar Sep 22nd 2008 7:16PM
... says the guy who blogs about the comments he writes on a blog full of day-late news and fluff pieces. Sad.
Zach Sep 22nd 2008 7:41PM
And yet... you're still here. Trolling.
Who's the bigger loser? A site that supposedly gives late day news and fluff or the guy who has nothing better to do but read said site and bother commenting on them.
You bore me.
Eternalpayn Sep 22nd 2008 5:45PM
What kind of addon is this? I know my way in and out of some aspects of addons, but am clueless about a lot of functions. I would love more details.
zappo Sep 22nd 2008 6:17PM
Jerimiah - Yeah, you'd probably just have some custom channel (called something like wowinsider), and then you'd have basically a seeder for that channel. The addon would basically subscribe and filter that channel depending upon your preferences.
With the limitations on what you could do with lua I would guess that this would be limited to text based info. I'm not sure what would be gained here, because honestly many articles here don't interest me half as much as the comments do.
Speaking of new column people, what ever happened to the rogue dude who does Encrypted Text?
Lemons Sep 22nd 2008 8:13PM
Yeah where is that dude? He better have a good excuse, like he was kidnapped by Peruvian gangsters, and they are holding him in a cave without an internet connection.
zappo Sep 22nd 2008 10:29PM
Well I can't blame the guy. I mean the rogue community is "harsh" to say the least. He also took a hellava lot of flak for his comment on using shiv. Not sure I'd want to keep writing for all of that either.
I suppose I could apply for either, but in all honesty I think that would take away too much time of my obsessing about Felicia Day.
So good luck to you rogue dude who cannot be found, and soon to be programming WoW insider spam-bot addon person. *salute*
Ulfdan Sep 22nd 2008 7:10PM
LOL, 64... That's Funny...
Acording to WoWMatrix I have 369 addons currently running (Assuming alot of that number are subfolders of some of the addons like Cartographer that has like 20 subfolders)
Lemons Sep 22nd 2008 8:10PM
You must be stopped.
Anywho, this job opening is awesome; makes me wish I got past the "Hello World" program in my wow modding career.
GyverX Sep 22nd 2008 9:25PM
Being an Addon junky, If it has a good purpose, and helps with game play then I will download it. As far as day late news... I coe here for all my news and latest stuff a few times a day before and after work. If its late, No biggy! At least its all in one place for me to read it. Beats the hell out of searching 15 websites to get it all. It's all in one neat package
Obzoki Sep 23rd 2008 5:56AM
Totally off topic, but still very much on topic. Those cute buttons in the picture, what do they do and where can i get them?
