The Engineer's dilemma

It's an interesting conundrum. Profitability and accessibility seem to be zero-sum in the game, and Engineers have complained for years that the profession was a complete money sink because they could sell so few items or services. I'm leveling Engineering on my Warrior right now and it became apparent pretty early that the profession lacked the usual lucrative items available to others; there's no real equivalent to Tailoring's bags, Leatherworking's armor kits, or Alchemy's raid potions. I've made money selling Mechanical Squirrels and that's it. So while I understand where Deftek's coming from, I still think the profession would benefit greatly from the addition of marketable BoE items, and Engineers have just been handed something that basically sells itself.
Having said that, a mount isn't an equivalent to, say, super mana potions or golden spellthread; you buy the motorcycle once and you never need to replace, consume, or update it, so the market for it will never extend beyond these one-time purchases. So while Engineering needs more moneymaking items, from an economics perspective the mount isn't a good choice and possibly should be BoP. But it sure looks cool, and I'd love to have one on my (non-Engineering) main.

That would cause these mounts to be too common, but I'm sure it will also be a good money maker early on in Wrath.
We might some day see a fancier version that is engineering only too, so no need to cry yet.

I can bet that mats will cost in the region of 5000-10000 gold.
Engineers have always screamed that their profession did not have enough good stuff to sell to other players for profit. There you go!
Heilig Sep 23rd 2008 2:33PM
They're not going to be selling them. They're going to have a million people bring them mats and ask them to make it for 10 gold.
Personally, I think ALL crafted items should be BoE. BoP is for dungeon drops. TRADEskills should make things to be TRADED, not immediately soulbound.
I approve of the change and it hasn't gone far enough.

One solution would be to give them some sort of durability that requires an engineer to repair. This would mean that while everyone might have these in their bank, that really only engineers would be using them. Furthermore, it would be a way for engineers to make money.

Since when is it "common" to use a ground mount? In old-world, sure, but most people at the level cap use their flying mounts to get around. These might be a fad up until level 77, and they'll dominate Ironforge of course, but I don't think they'll be nearly as ubiquitous as everyone seems to think.

"These might be a fad up until level 77"
Actually, they require level 80. You're not going to see them a lot.

This is a once-per-toon, low volume item.
If the schematic for the BoE item is BoP, then the Eng with it can make a fortune. If the schematic for the BoE item is BoE, then much/most of the profit goes to the person who sells the finds/sells the schematic. If the schematic for the BoE item is trainable, then Eng will make a small tip to make one with your mats.

While I think it would be nice to have the engi mount on my non-engineers I think it really comes down to that if it isn’t going to be engineer only then that is just one more reason not to roll engineering. Part of the reason I did it is that we had cool stuff no one else could use. Take that away and its hardly worth it for just an epic pair of goggles and a couple guns…

yaaa, cuz motorcyles are in Warcraft lore. First helicopters, now motorcycles... next?
Dunwich Sep 23rd 2008 2:25PM
Next they'll have submarines.
Oh wait.
Anymouse Sep 23rd 2008 6:11PM
Helicopters were in lore since at least Warcraft II, steam tanks since WC3, don't see why motorcycles are a huge leap of faith.

So are Primals not profitable???
I can make about 150g an hour in farming primals...
Sometimes more if I really get into it

Unfortunately my own engineer is level 45 right now so no mote-extractor for me yet.
Cory Sep 23rd 2008 2:10PM
I'm a lore nut. People will probably be like "Who cares, shut up." But coming from a lore perspective...engineers have always been looked at as the odd-balls for their inventions and contraptions. Mostly because ONLY engineers know what they are, what they do, and how to use them. That should be enough to keep this as an engineer only mount.
But then we get to the fact that its a MOTORCYCLE. Yes. There's planes, trams, and tanks. But once you get to motorcycle...then you're kind of crossing a threshold in my opinion. (MY Opinion). I'd shrug it off if this was engineer-only. But seriously. No one wants to see 40 motor cycles on their screens in cities. At least I hope.

Can you site some Engineering Lore references, because, honestly, I think you are pushing it?
Aigarius Sep 23rd 2008 2:24PM
If you can make a helicopter that an engineer can fly, then you can surely create a simple motorcycle that any average Joe can drive. Put it on an electric engine for simple gas/break operation, add a gyroscope to provide total stability even when stationary and there you go!
Cory Sep 23rd 2008 2:32PM
I'll admit. I have no sources...other than how the system is currently implemented in the game itself. The fact is the majority of the items you make in the game can only be used by engineers. Why else would it be that way unless it meant only engineers knew how to use them? It's also the reason there are items like EZ-Throw dynamite.
As I read in a forum somewhere: Can't plop a person in a nuclear submarine and expect him to know what he's doing.
Granted, motorcycles aren't even a hair like nuclear submarines. But I'm sure as hell a Night Elf tailor will have no idea what to do when that sucker hits it's first 3000 miles and needs servicing. =)
onetrueping Sep 23rd 2008 3:53PM
Oooh, now THERE is a way to make money as an engineer! If they gave the motorcycle a 1% chance to fail, they could also give engineers a schematic to fix 'em.
Cory Sep 23rd 2008 3:56PM
Can't forget the insurance.
Gnome-Co
So easy, an orc can do it.

Why should engineers be the only profession who can create ground mounts? Granted, Tailoring now can make flying mounts come Wrath, but for the majority of 2 years Engineers have also been the only craft capable of creating flying mounts. I say keep it BoE, it's only fair that they share it.
