Tips for Brewfest keg runs

Brewfest is in full swing, and there's on aspect that most participants dread: Keg running. It's not terribly hard once you know how it goes, but figuring it out can be a real pain. Let's see if we can ease the learning process, shall we? Here are some things that worked for me:
- Take a walk (or run) up and down the course before you start the race. Find out where all of the apple barrels are on the course. There should be one at the beginning, one at the end, and two spaced out in the middle. You don't need all four of them, but knowing where they are is the important part.
- Let's pick which ones you want to use. Let's number them: The barrel at the beginning is #1, and they're in numerical order from there, #4 at the end. Ignore #1 and #3. Pretend they don't exist. They aren't there. There are only two apple buckets, #2 and #4.
- Put your ram reins on your action bar somewhere, don't try to click it in your bags. You want to steer with your mouse, and use your other hand to mash the hotkey is much as possible. You can do this entire race full speed in the red. If you hit barrel #2 and #4 every time you pass them, you'll never need to slow down.
- Get a feel for how close/far you need to be from the NPCs to get a barrel and/or turn in the barrel. You don't need to get all up in their face, so you can save a few seconds each time getting a feel for this.
- Why am I using barrels 2 and 4 and not 1 and 3? Because on the Alliance side, barrel 1 is inside some stupid tent that doesn't let my ram get back out without getting stuck and I waste a ton of time.
- Finally, steady wins the race here, and in the barking quests as well. Don't panic about the time; just get into a rhythm and try to stay there.

This quest is the Warrior/Druid of seasonal quests.

What is that suppose to mean?

I discovered for alliance you can get away with only using buckets 1 and 3, turning around the second you see the keg thrown at you. With this you can spam your reins nonstop the entire round. You will arrive at Bucket 3 the first time 85-95 exhaust, and 55 on your way back. You will arrive at bucket 1 with 75-85 exhaust. The hardest part is not running into trees, your vision is dimmed from the branches. You can easily make 20+ runs with this strategy.

I don't know about Horde side, but here is what I do Alliance side.
I use #2 and #3 personnally, since you can turn around before you get to the barrel person (either the one throwing them or the one you throw them to).
The trick there is to always get #2 and #3 and try to spot the point where you get the barrel, and turn quickly (mouse very helpful there of course).
Once you get the rythm down, it's all good. I usually mess up at least once in there and today I've gotten 24 tickets. I'm sure I can get more tomorrow, my mount got exhausted once today.
Hope it helps.

This. This is the way to win. Barrels 1 and 4 are traps. Avoid them. Alliance side, the turnaround points are just past the path up to the building for the pickup and just past the brewfest flag for the dropoff. You have enough time to hit the barrel, get to the pickup point, and then book it back to the same barrel before you get exhausted. You may miss a couple on your first try, but once you get it down you will get 30+ tokens every time. last year was harder, there was no third barrel, so you had to canter a bit, but with the extra barrel you can gallop the whole way.

I use #2 and #3 as well. Extra tip as you are coming close to the drop-off point (or pick-up) point, aim to the NPC, hold you left mouse button, rotate the camera 180 degrees, as soon as you see a barrel in the air, click your right mouse button. This will turn you around instantly, saving you multiple seconds on each turn.

I use #2 and #3 too, out of habit ; I used only #2 last year, timing jumps on accelerations.

I agree - this is the strategy I use, and even though I have a huge problem avoiding the tree after bucket 3, I still end up with at least 20 tickets each time

here's a trick that worked for me and it's alot easier, u don't need to use the ram but hey, it's fun trying it with the ram..
Just start the keg run, then get off the ram. Then jump onto ur 100% mount, or the 60% one depending on which one you got and just run down pickup the keg and run back. etc etc for the next few kegs. :)
Heilig Sep 23rd 2008 6:19PM
Shenanigans.
You don't get any kegs to deliver if you don't have the ram buff on your toon. Nice try though.
Steve Sep 23rd 2008 6:45PM
Not only is your advice wrong, but the ram goes faster than a 100% mount with crusader aura, so it's stupid too.

hehe, whats so entertaining about catching people in a lie this blatent!!

There are only three barrels this year, at least in Durotar, and you can't skip any of them. A tip I'd give for the barking quests is dismount after your finished your last yell and get on your regular mount, it's much faster and you wont have to risk getting your ram tired.
Aziru Sep 23rd 2008 6:37PM
There are 4 barrels in Durotar. The 2nd middle barrel is in the rocks to the east side of the road, in between the one on the road and the last by the barrel guy.
Farrell Sep 23rd 2008 6:39PM
Yes, you can. You can skip the one at the start - if you have the timing right, you'll hit the second one with 95 fatigue.

This comment shouldn't be modded down, it's perfectly valid.
On the Horde side, there are only three barrels. You need to use all three to keep your speed maxed through the barrel run.
The barking runs are different. On those, you ride through the city hitting four different flags, and there are no barrels. On *that* quest, you can safely dismount from your ram after you've hit the fourth flag, and ride your regular mount back to turn in your quest. That lets you push your ram faster through the first four flags.

THERE... ARE... FOUR... BARRELS!!!
Yes, there really is four barrels in Durotar, not 3. 1 in the kodo enclave where you get the quest, one off the right side of the road 1/4 to 1/3 of the way in, one behind a small dune at the left just before entering the walled-off portion of the course, and a fourth to the left just past the guy who throws you the barrels.
Fastest way is a straight line, which means barrels #1 and #3. Get the quest, run straight so that you pass right by the small dune and hit the apples that way, straight to the barrel thrower and back to the same barrel, straight to deliver the barrel, right into the enclave, hit the apples, and right, over the small fence and back towards the thrower. Always at top speed. I can get 12 barrels this way, 13 if everything is perfect.
Alliance race is much easier, Horde gets the short end of the stick and gets only about 1/2 the tickets you can get on an Alliance run.
Arcandeath Sep 23rd 2008 6:12PM
You can also make a macro to get to fastest speed without mashing the button so much.

The keg run really isn't that hard. I normally get 6 or more barrels in. I know it's not impressive but allows me to get decent tokens. The one through the city isn't that hard if you know the right order.
