New items for old Honor
Vaneras on the EU forums has posted those "special" items we heard about yesterday -- the bad news of the Honor wipe before the expansion is tempered by the fact that Blizzard is giving us some more ways to spend that honor before it all goes away.I've put all the items after the jump in case you can't reach the forums here during the day, but these items are about what you'd expect -- cloaks and trinkets, at or maybe slightly better than the gear you'll be picking up early on into Wrath of the Lich King. If you haven't ground out PvP gear yet (or grabbed some epics from the high-end raids), you may get a level or two out of these, but you'll definitely have replaced them by the time we all hit 80. There are no prices or timelines on when these items will be released, either -- we'd imagine that they'll come out with patch 3.0.2 (Vaneras says "the next content patch") and that the actual wipe will come with the Wrath release patch.
Additionally, gems obtained through Honor will go BoE (or at least not BoP) and will no longer be "Unique-equipped" after the patch, so you can nab some gems as well before the wipe shows up for your alts or other guildies. Nice of Blizzard to give us a few more ways to get rid of the honor (and personally, I think there are good reasons for the wipe anyway), but those who are really steaming about losing the honor they built up probably won't be completely satisfied by these items.
Vaneras posts:
For those with unspent honor points prior to the release of the expansion, we will be offering a few upgrades and special rewards in next content patch solely for purchase via the honor system:

I don't agree with the deletion of arena points either, but let's be honest - there's always "massive uproar on the official WoW forums" about something, particularly from hard-core pvp'ers who aren't happy with the state of things already.

Oh nice, some gear we can use for a month, i was hoping for something thats makes up for the fact its buy it or lose your honor.
James Sep 24th 2008 2:08PM
Eh I guess now Im gonna get the Merc Glad spell staff on my lock, just cause it looks cool...
Eliseth Sep 24th 2008 2:11PM
Ooo, just realized that the spell power change will mean that one of the honor gems will finally be useful to healers! That's moderately exciting.
cjshrader Sep 24th 2008 2:22PM
I think the point of them wiping honor is so that you don't have some item that will allow you to "hump faces" in Wintergrasp.

Nothing is future proof. Why? Because we can't predict the future, thats why. Can your computer from 1998 run Vista 64? I bet not because your computer was made to run was was out. Same holds true to everything, even in wow. I bet your not rockin the blues you had on at level 45 still at 70. Cause there is upgrades.
Just be ready for the reset with gold and skills. Don't worry about the gear cause it won't matter so much anymore.

why the hell add more gear? its all going to be useless in a few levels anyway. hell, greens from northrend will be better for grinding than the pvp gear.
i'd rather see some fluff that will be useful/fun at level 80. a mount, tabard, battle standards, etc.

"Can your computer from 1998 run Vista 64?"
From the reports, doesn't sound like any computer can :-)

I like the idea of fluff items - something I'll hold on to - or an honor-to-heirloom conversion type item. Even if they didn't have the heirloom items ready or didn't want to give them out until 80, they could give you credit for the points, maybe use them as some sort of limited multiplier for future honor points or something. It does seem like a pretty cheap way to wipe the slate.

"and personally, I think there are good reasons for the wipe anyway"
not a whole lot of complaining going on about the wipe. most peope seem to not mind except the few dummiez that were not really thinking ahead and capped honor/arena points thinking the could carry them to LK. there were lots of unknows about points being wiped so if you gambled and saved them up you lost the bet. go buy some mounts and
spf Sep 24th 2008 4:28PM
do you think, that it will be buyable by badges too?
gargis Sep 24th 2008 3:56PM
What about marks? Do they get wiped also?
Spoonmaster Sep 24th 2008 3:58PM
I'm pissed.
Just bought my Battlemaster's Trinket this week and there is a new one coming out? >_<
Not gonna farm 30k honor again lol.

I'm on the bandwagon with others on thinking WoW is on the wrong track forcing PvPers to arena if they want PvP gear. Now I know how the PvEers felt when they had to do the same thing. What's the link for WAR Insider? Arena should not be the end-game of PvP. Isn't this a MMO? What's massive about 2v2?
Amaxe Sep 24th 2008 4:06PM
Well, my thinking is of two minds:
1) Given Blizzard gave no warning to this, there needs to be some kind of items you can use that are worth it, and people want. I have no use for the full time PVPers personally, but they did earn it, and are entitled to have some compensation for it.
2) These rewards should be *IN NO WAY* good for level 80 content. Think about it. We're all level 70. The rewards should be good for a person of the current max level, not for something 10 levels above you. The challenges are geared for our current max level, not for something higher.
In short, the goods you get for your honor and tokens might be advantageous to get your *start* to 80, but should not be so good you can coast all the way there.

Armor penetration rating? Wha?
so...what does that translate into ignore armor exactly? I know my current cape, Dory's Embrace, has like 100 something ignore armor, so does this cape have more or less?
JBurg Sep 24th 2008 9:25PM
Dory's Embrace has a 17 armor penetration rating. The new cloaks are minor upgrades (very minor) over the ones you already bought with badges if you liked PvP.
I keep wondering how Mark Jacobs got somebody this deep into Blizzard's decision making team.

>>"gems obtained through Honor will go BoE (or at least not BoP)"
Pro-tip: all gems are inherently BoE, because of how socketing works.
