Around Azeroth: Waterfalls
One of the things that continues to surprise me about WoW is the amount of content that few, if any, people will really see. The dragon massacring a group of adventurers under the flight path to Burning Steppes is a great example. This waterfall and house, high above Elwynn Forest, is another one. It was meant to be just decoration on the flight path between Stormwind and Ironforge, but smart hunter Aurelio made it to the top of the waterfall and used Eagle Eye to get some good shots. If only there were some NPCs up there!
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards.

Eagle Eye...

Those areas just plain annoy me. I have tried to reach so many of them just to find nothing there. There really should at least be a NPC that has some flavor text, something like "Oh, sorry the house is a mess, we weren't really expecting visitors." Maybe a bit of lore even. Everytime I fly over these places I search and search with my mouse for someone, just to find nothing. Allthough I am the kind that swims around uncharted sea area just looking for easter eggs, just to find a gnomish launch pad southwest in Aszhara and wonders what it is. Or from Menethil Harbor to Westfall only to find that the clipping on the mountain ranges makes it look like the side of the mountain looks like the dark stairs from "Return of the King", probably just a graphical error. Guess it serves me right for just wanting to explore, but I really do think that there should be something for those that just want to look.

That gnomish launch pad is used in the Passing the Burden quest line, where you have to make some drawings of runes in the Ruins of Eldarath. You bring the drawings to the launch pad, where a gnome picks em up in his plane.

I agree wholeheartedly, I love exploring and I spend a lot of time wandering fruitlessly through Azeroth.
It's actually probably why I don't have any level 70 characters despite playing for so long, I just wander a lot.

Felt the same way going through Nagrand.
"I wonder what's on all those floating islands in the sky"
buncha nothin.. :(

for as long as i've been playing, i've been vowing to get into that valley above elwynn forest, where the large waterfall begins that drops down to elwynn. there's a campsite in that valley and everything! there must be a way to get there. i agree with the first poster... blizzard should make it worthwhile for those of us who manage to get to these out-of-the-way places by having an NPC with something to say about it.
Darleth Sep 25th 2008 12:05PM
It used to be doable you know, but I'm not sure if it still is. Such
a shame as well, if Blizz really are so very against wall-walking to
explore unfinished areas, they should at least spray everywhere with
lots of little hidden places that are insignificant but teasingly
visible, and make it legitimate but not easy for us to get to them.
And then as someone's said here, reward us with flavour text or
easter eggs or something
There are already a handful, such as for example the Tauren Baby Farm
between Nagrand and Zangarmarsh, and I once found a Shisha and a
Skeleton on one of the Zangarmarsh mushrooms. Swimming around the
continents of Kalimdor and Azeroth also was great fun, but I don't
really think Blizzard wanted us to do that.

That's the one thing that struck me immediately about Northrend, they redid the waterfalls to look... realistic.
Beautiful.

I'm another one who just likes to wander around exploring. I've found some very beautiful spots and some spots that make you wonder if they were intending it for something, but never got around to it. One of my favorites, and one that I will get to just as soon as I get up a few more levels, is the Shatterspear Troll village. I know that many people have gotten there in one fashion or another and that it's old news, but for me...I've never been there, just flown over it. So for me, it's a vacation destination :-)

the village with the dancing trolls ?

I remember going with a friend to the Airstrip above IronForge. It took forever to get over the geography, but once up there, there was a ton of things to see. The never ending battle at the airstrip.
The 'back door' to Iron Forge.
We climbed all the way up the mountainside to where there is a flag or post planted by some NPC. And the crashed airplain.
There is also a little valley on the back side towards Menethil with a small road and a few houses and a farm. The road has a signpost pointing 3 ways... 'this way', 'that way' and 'The other way'
There is a tunnel down into the mountain that eventually falls away to inside the world.
Probably spent about 3 hours just roaming around up there.
Roxton Sep 25th 2008 2:03PM
Yes, and if you line youself up right and slowfall while mounted through that tunnel into the middle of the world, you can end up in old Ironforge. Or you can just get a mage to sheep you in there. Great place.
Xeren Sep 25th 2008 1:50PM
I love it up there too- for those that don't know, there are videos on youtube (or at least there were when last i checked) on how to get up there if you're curious to check i out yourself.
I slow fell with my mage through that door to inside the world, i fell and fell and fell, going under ironforge, but it never led anywhere, eventually i stopped burning light feathers, and just fell and died.
Frank Sep 25th 2008 3:47PM
yes -- that's another place i keep vowing to get to: the IF airstrip! glad to hear it's possible, and that there's a tunnel, too! question: what's in "old ironforge" -- anything?

One time I was in The Barrens at the Merchant Coast, lockpicking on the pirate ship, when I decided to swim out to any island I saw.
When I got there, all I saw was a bunch of NPC's standing around and looking at a pit in the ground .
Anyone know what that was?

I also discovered this island while swimming off the coast of the Barrens. It's used for a warrior quest - not many people seem to know about it. =)

Every time I fly into Searing Gorge, and it's a lot with helping guild members do the Brewfest boss, I see those NPCs getting attacked by that dragon and I want to help. I spent a good hour one day trying to get up there.
I remember being taken to the Ironforge airstrip shortly after I started playing. It was late at night so the graphics were of a moonlit area. The person I was with was not a sightseer and we just ran through the area, not stopping to look at anything. I didn't know about screen shots at the time or I would have photographed everything. Occasionally, someone will inquire in General chat about the airstrip and will be told getting up there results in a 3 day ban. Is that true?
I keep thinking these small places will be used in some future patch, 4.5.9, as a for instance? There are the doors at the bottom of Tanaris guarded by giants and the empty horde village on the far southern tip of Kalimdor as well as this area above Ironforge, which seem to be partially developed for future use. And what of Alcaz Island which figured prominently at the beginning of WOW but has since been abandoned? Once Wrath has been out for 6 months to a year, perhaps we will see some development in these areas to bring them to life.
