Ask a Beta Tester: Flight, gear, and more

In regards to flight, what areas are restricted (besides Dalaran) and how to they prevent us from flying over the ocean? Is it a wall, or a new fatigue system?
Beyond places that are indoors and you can't mount period, Dalaran and Wintergrasp are the two no-flight zones I've seen. You can't fly in Dalaran so it's more city-like, and Lake Wintergrasp so you actually have to take part in the combat and plan your travel routes, not simply fly from point A to point B without a care in the world. Flying too far out to sea gives you a fatigue bar
Kodath asked...
With Death Knights coming out, are there any plans on setting up Teir armor sets? For instance, take down Curator, and there is a T4 glove token he can use?
No, Death Knights aren't getting special gear added to old content. You won't be seeing Death Knight Tier 2 in Blackwing Lair or Tier 4 in Karazhan or Tier 6 in Black Temple. You start seeing Death Knight sets in Wrath content.
Rufihoe asked...
I have been looking at some of the level 80 gear from factions and dungeons and I am just starting to feel like I might even be keeping some of my items all the way to heroics at level 80. So the question is am I missing something or Is my full t6 set replaceable before 80 or is it going to take me to 80 and somewhat beyond?
Your Tier 6 is going to last you a really, really long time. My Shadow Priest was still wearing every piece of Tier 6/Sunwell gear she brought to Northrend until level 80. I replaced my weapon and off-hand pretty early in level 80, probably could have done so around level 78 if I knew where to look. The rest isn't going to be replaced until Heroics, or possibly even 10-man raids.
A guild that's in Sunwell right now will be able to go straight to 10-man raiding in Wrath of the Lich King, as soon as you hit level 80. You might want to pick up bits from Heroics first to smooth things out, but it's pretty optional at this point.
themadchemist asked...
I currently have 2 70s a resto shammy and a prot pally. I am hoping to make my Death Knight my DPS class. How is DPSing PVE/PVP with a Death Knight? Is it redundant or engaging/challenging?
It's very easy to start playing a Death Knight. It's very easy to play one casually. Playing one well is much more difficult. You'll be watching rune cooldowns, DoT durations, all while using every single global cooldown available to hit another button, and trying to squeeze in usage of your Runic Power for Death Coils or whatever else you may have. It's a fast paced DPS class in PvE, so if you like crunching numbers and plotting rotations and figuring out how to maximize your DPS and all of that stuff, a Death Knight is a good class for that.
Boke asked...
Has there been any mention of the item or items that are going to be replacing the Amani War Bear Mount in ZA?
I do not believe it's been mentioned what it is, and I definitely haven't bothered with old content on the Wrath beta. No idea on this one, sorry. Maybe you'll get a pile of Large Bear Bones. You took too long to get to it, it rotted away. How sad!
Sapphyre asked...
Is running Heroic dungeons still tied to faction reputation for individual dungeons? If so will this remain at honored or is this being reset back to a higher level upon launch?
For the Heroics I've done so far, there was no keying process at all. For example, my first time clearing Utgarde Pinnacle was actually on Heroic mode. Someone pulled me into their PUG despite me making it very clear I've never even done the dungeon on normal mode. It was challenging, but we did okay. I didn't need to buy a key or complete a quest or anything. We just flipped on Heroic mode and went in.
JM asked...
Have quest rewards been improved so that you aren't getting so much useless gear? I hate completing a quest on my rogue just to find a wand and plate gear as my reward selection.
Well, there's no more Spirit on Warrior plate. That's good. But you'll still get a ton of useless crap, sorry.

Well damn, there goes my idea of flying back to old Azeroth lol.
They really dont want us flying around there do they?
jay Sep 25th 2008 4:08PM
Why the hell does twitter.com keep asking my for my password?
Schadenfreude Sep 25th 2008 6:22PM
Azeroth just looks BAD from angles other than the ground, and there are large stretches of blank map in between zones. That's why taxis in the old world take such roundabout routes sometimes-- if they went straight you would see the blank stuff.
You can see a little bit of this in action if you take a flight to Un'Goro Crater with maximum draw distance-- just before you dip down into the crater you catch a glimpse of the top of a tree that is just a brown cylinder.
I'd love to fly in Azeroth though, and I'm hoping that Blizzard will hire a bunch of summer students one year and pay them slave wages to fill in all those holes and texture the tops of trees and whatnot.

I wonder if Blizzard caved in to the massive QQing of some players who boo hoo'ed about trading in their "hard earned" epics for wrath greens.
BillDoor Sep 25th 2008 3:34PM
Well, unlike Vanilla -> BC, the item valuation formula didn't change this time. Even with that, people were wearing Tier 3 gear into Kara, so this is pretty much the same thing.
c2mfj Sep 25th 2008 3:34PM
Coming to TBC in Tier 2, I didn't replace my gear until level 70 dungeons and even then I didn't replace all of it. Seeing as that wasn't even the highest tier available at the time, Tier 6 lasting to the 10 mans isn't very surprising.
jay Sep 25th 2008 4:04PM
Most probably mate, the mere thought of loosing them did it.
But seriously, they didn't do it for them in TBC, why are they doing it now? didn't hurt the first time around tbh.
Raya Sep 25th 2008 4:11PM
I don't see anything wrong with that. They did work very hard for it and its a good reward for hardcore gamers. I don't mind replacing my stuff and don't resent T6 guys.
Will be cool to get some new gear. I was stressing about losing all my hard earned gear, but you know what I realized its just a game and I now have a chance to earn more awesome gear.
jay Sep 25th 2008 4:06PM
Bah, forgot about T3... my bad >.
Nick S Sep 25th 2008 4:20PM
Some high-end guild killed Illidan in T3 gear (to prove a point, not because that was easy.)
So the gear reset isn't THAT much different, really, it's just that a lot more people have good gear now.
Unmei Sep 25th 2008 7:05PM
imo it's kinda gay if that's the case for all of those who cant get into places like the Sunwell and just want to play the game without the stress of raids.
=/
Andrew Welch Sep 25th 2008 6:39PM
hink about it like the old world leveling. If you get an epic boe at lvl 30 (say), it'll stil be good at lvl 40 but there will be better.
Molly Sep 25th 2008 3:13PM
What's the word on passenger mounts? Will they be a whole new level of riding skill, or will you simply purchase them individually? How much do these things cost?
Mayhew Sep 25th 2008 3:31PM
The Grand Caravan Mammoth is a 3-person mount that you can just purchase from a vendor in Dalaran, but it costs 20,000g (though that will probably go down as you gain reputation with the Kirin Tor). I don't know about other passenger mounts.
BillDoor Sep 25th 2008 3:32PM
There are two in the game right now, the Engineer-made motorcycle, and the Grand Caravan Mammoth. The motorcycle holds two people. The Mammoth holds 3, and has a vendor too! The motorcycle is made by engineers but anyone can use it. The Mammoth is 20,000 gold, and sold by a vendor in Dalaran. No reputation or additional riding skill is required for either.
Raya Sep 25th 2008 4:12PM
Don't forget, I believe tailors can make flying carpets
AND DAMN 20,000g!!! Just saving up 5k for my epic flier was a pain. There better be a lot of ways to make money in the expansion to justify that price.
Lagunis Sep 25th 2008 3:17PM
the bear mount isn't actually removed. You just can't pick it up if you aren't exactly level 70. It's been confirmed on the beta that if you take a 70 on a raid with 9 80's, the bear will drop and only the 70 can get it.
calaf Sep 25th 2008 3:51PM
This is in stark contrast to everything i have read. Including patch notes. Do you have proof of this?
Raya Sep 25th 2008 4:12PM
Really? I heard come patch 3.0 you can't get the bear mount no matter what level you are. That's why my guild is running that instance like crazy now.
Robert M Sep 25th 2008 3:16PM
This has less to do with beta and more to do with the overall expansion, but in last night's patch notes, there was a change made to hunters and the intersting comment was "- Trap Mastery - This will now be the 41-point Survival talent. Granted, not very sexy for a 41-pointer but we'll do some changes there in a future patch (after WOLK ships)."
Is anyone else concerned as they beta test that there are areas of the game that are lacking and run the risk of being rushed? I have always been disgusted with Blizzard for making me wait for a game until it was ready, much in the same way, your parents drive you crazy when you are a kid and you have to wait til christmas morning. Similar to that example, I'd hope that we arent getting to open our christmas present early only to find something frustrating like "batteries not included," and Blizzard forgot to provide them because they were rushed at the last minute.
