Will Wrath really be ready by November 13?

This time around, though, 'soon' is actually November 13, Wrath of the Lich King's shipping date. The announcement came as a surprise to some of us, specially those who were in the Beta and knew a lot of the classes still needed balancing. But a confirmed release date is always exciting and I suppose that overshadowed whatever doubts we might have had about Wrath being ready in time. And then yesterday, Koraa posted something over at the Hunter forums that greatly disturbed me. Talking about Trap Mastery, he said: "this will now be the 41-point Survival talent. Granted, not very sexy for a 41-pointer but we'll do some changes there in a future patch (after WOLK ships)."
Did I read that right? Did Koraa actually admit that they'll be shipping Wrath of the Lich King with a Hunter talent they know isn't ready for primetime? Didn't he essentially say, "we know it doesn't work, but we'll fix it after we release it"? I don't know about you, but that just doesn't sound like the Blizzard we've all come to know and love. Even Ghostcrawler mentioned that the 51-point talent Riptide wasn't going to ship with the intended sounds and animation. Am I supposed to be apprehensive now? Because honestly, I am.We're about a month and two weeks away from Wrath. The golden master of the game should be pressed really soon, shouldn't it? This means we actually have just a couple more weeks, maybe less, to straighten things out before all that code is compiled and pressed into DVDs, packed into those nifty little boxes, and shipped out to where we can get our greedy hands on them. So how come things don't feel as ready as what Blizzard usually describes as "ready"?
Don't get me wrong, I like what I've seen so far in Beta. The game looks great, the story is shaping up phenomenally, and even the little touches -- especially the little touches -- are wonderful. But there's obviously a lot more work to be done. I'm very hopeful that things will balance out in the end, but Koraa's post really upset me. It indicates that Blizzard is willing to put out a game that they know isn't finished, and that's extremely unsettling. Blizzard has never been a slave to release dates and it's always worked to their advantage. If it means getting a better game, this is one instance where I'd rather have Wrath shipped later rather than sooner.

I recall BC needing a bit of polish after it was released.
fooey Sep 25th 2008 7:19PM
BC also missed the holiday release to give it more polish time...
Apparently not following their gold standard this time

Having worked in software for 10 years (none of which involve games) I can honestly say every app you've ever used has hunreds of thousands of bugs (yes you read that right) 95% of which you'll never run into. That's the trick with releasing software though - if you don't run into the vast majority of them - they can quietly fix them patch after patch.
Talents, graphics (graphics around talents) are what I'd call cosmetic issues - it most cases the spell or whatever works, but it doesn't look pretty - however doesn't affect game play too much.

Verit... talents are COSMETIC ISSUES? Um... want to think about that again? Talents are what we use to define ourselves. Animations and sounds? Yeah, who cares... but talents being reworked in major ways are not the sort of small bug you're talking about (I've worked in software for 2 decades, so I'm familiar with what you mean).

Be careful with your posts. Tigole banned someone from the official forums for posting what you just did. Don't want him jumping over here and banning you too. Those WoW devs, scary people.

That's because he wont want his thunder being ripped out from under him when he officially announces at Blizzcon wrath will be delayed..... oh wait.
Ullrik Sep 25th 2008 7:11PM
Well basicly what he could be saying is that, it would be ready when the game is stuck in the box and shiped to the stores. Now that doesnt mean that the patch to fix this wont be ready by the release date.

All he said was it wasn't a very sexy 41 point talent. He didn't say anything about it not working. just that it wasn't all that for a 41 point talent. People are reading too much into his comment

if the game gets pushed back because things aren't ready - everyone complains......
if the game ships on time with a few things not quite right - everyone complains......
me personally, i'll take "on time" and let them fix things later. half the stuff that's "ready" now will be nerfed, bugged or tweaked later anyways. might as well start lvling to 80 and worry about fine tuning as we go.

The poll results disagree with your "everybody" assertion.
Lemons Sep 25th 2008 7:12PM
Historically MMO's that ship without all thier features end up losing a bunch of customers, but I guess if you're WoW you just don't care anymore :\
nate Sep 25th 2008 7:57PM
Oh for chrissakes, it's not shipping with a lot of stuff missing. This is total par for the course when it comes to MMOs. Move along, non-story.
Jono Sep 25th 2008 7:13PM
"This means we actually have just a couple more weeks, maybe less, to straighten things out before all that code is compiled and pressed into DVDs"
You what? The only "important" stuff on the DVD will be the artwork. They can change everything else (and even some of that) up until 12th November and patch.
Kastirin Sep 25th 2008 7:27PM
^^ This. In all likelyhood, the master DVD was sent out for pressing weeks ago, and boxing is already taking place.
There will be a large download patch required after you install the pretty blue WotLK DVD. That's exactly what happened with BC, anyway.
Jp Sep 25th 2008 7:31PM
Also, think about how many copies they need to make of this expansion - the code's already being pressed onto literally millions of dvds, that way people will be able to get their hands on a copy. My honest guess would be the dvds will have the very first build of 3.0.2, but even that only puts it at 8 weeks to put out - what? - at the very least 2 million copies, probably more in the range of over 6 million. Yeah, we're all going to be downloading big patches on November 13th. Just like we all downloaded big patches on January 16th, 2007.
Cy Sep 25th 2008 7:48PM
/agree
Altho the DVD probably still hasn't gone out for pressing yet. I'm sure they've already got the boxes and booklets and whatnot going, but whipping out a few million DVDs and throwing them in boxes takes no time at all. It'll take longer to ship them to the stores, but even that doesn't take too long.
Bootsanator Sep 25th 2008 7:59PM
pretty true - tweaks to class balance and talents, etc. can come any time they want, that's a small patch i'm sure. the DVD's are for the bigass-ness that is Northrend.
Jon Sep 25th 2008 7:15PM
This is a video game. There hasn't been a video game in the history of the universe that hasn't been released with more than a few bugs, and believe you me, most of them were known to the developers and programmers before release, but for one reason or another, they chose not to fix it/were unable to fix it. Just because they TOLD you they knew of one of the bugs doesn't mean all of a sudden the sky is falling. I'm sure Warcraft and Starcraft and Diablo and all the World of Warcraft games shipped with hundreds of bugs they knew they'd have to fix later, but just chose not to enlighten you with. It's not anything new, you're just being paranoid.
Tim Sep 25th 2008 7:15PM
Petty tyrants, really. I think a lot of them (not all) are totally full of themselves. They are demigods in a way, ruling over a private miniature universe of players, and I'm sure they don't like being told off. It's the kind of tendency that develops in any highly successful enterprise, and they'd be well-placed to rein it in, for all our sakes.
