Will Wrath really be ready by November 13?

This time around, though, 'soon' is actually November 13, Wrath of the Lich King's shipping date. The announcement came as a surprise to some of us, specially those who were in the Beta and knew a lot of the classes still needed balancing. But a confirmed release date is always exciting and I suppose that overshadowed whatever doubts we might have had about Wrath being ready in time. And then yesterday, Koraa posted something over at the Hunter forums that greatly disturbed me. Talking about Trap Mastery, he said: "this will now be the 41-point Survival talent. Granted, not very sexy for a 41-pointer but we'll do some changes there in a future patch (after WOLK ships)."
Did I read that right? Did Koraa actually admit that they'll be shipping Wrath of the Lich King with a Hunter talent they know isn't ready for primetime? Didn't he essentially say, "we know it doesn't work, but we'll fix it after we release it"? I don't know about you, but that just doesn't sound like the Blizzard we've all come to know and love. Even Ghostcrawler mentioned that the 51-point talent Riptide wasn't going to ship with the intended sounds and animation. Am I supposed to be apprehensive now? Because honestly, I am.We're about a month and two weeks away from Wrath. The golden master of the game should be pressed really soon, shouldn't it? This means we actually have just a couple more weeks, maybe less, to straighten things out before all that code is compiled and pressed into DVDs, packed into those nifty little boxes, and shipped out to where we can get our greedy hands on them. So how come things don't feel as ready as what Blizzard usually describes as "ready"?
Don't get me wrong, I like what I've seen so far in Beta. The game looks great, the story is shaping up phenomenally, and even the little touches -- especially the little touches -- are wonderful. But there's obviously a lot more work to be done. I'm very hopeful that things will balance out in the end, but Koraa's post really upset me. It indicates that Blizzard is willing to put out a game that they know isn't finished, and that's extremely unsettling. Blizzard has never been a slave to release dates and it's always worked to their advantage. If it means getting a better game, this is one instance where I'd rather have Wrath shipped later rather than sooner.

Id rather have it on time. They'll release patches pretty quick to address the unfinished things.
Seriously get over it.

So if some parts aren't ready for wrath they just wont include them in the release and add them later in patches. That is what I'd plan for anyway.

Stopped testing my hunter in the beta cause what's the point of testing a class if it's going to completely change over and over again even after Wotlk is released.
Hammer Sep 25th 2008 7:40PM
Possibly just poor phrasing, but you don't join a Beta to test you're character and the balance, you join it to test the whole game.
Waste of a beta place.

It's evolution baby.

Something like this, it really doesnt seem like a problem. If they didnt have a procedure in place to provide OTA updates, if it were something that required them to send me a new disc to fix, or that i would be stuck with after release, then that would worry me, but it will be patched. No problem.

How many talents and abilities did they rework after the original WoW came out? How many did they rework again after TBC? They've certainly released WoW with things not working quite how they wanted it to before, but they get lost over time.
Hammer Sep 25th 2008 7:36PM
So no-one remembers the state of WoW when it was launched?
You know, where chunks of content were unfinished, and it was bugged to hell?

You have to wonder if this is Activision showing its colors...

no we actually do have all the way till retail release, the retail version won't be the most current build, for all we know, they're all already made and in distribution channels, it doesn't matter what's on the dvd, cause there will be patches anyway, we don't even need retail dvd release, all we need is the key, but they don't wanna alienate retail stores, so they keep selling hardcopies
that being said, time's still short before release, but they've started balancing numbers, so they'll make it

Burning Crusade shipped without Netherdrakes, which were like... one of the Holy Trinities of the marketing. This is not as new a thing as this article claims.

I really think that they should just release it on time. Being on time is a very important thing for Blizzard right now - particularly because their competition just released it's game (Warhammer) and Blizzard needs a response before people get bored, and get absorbed into Mythic's player base.
Blizzard is notorious for releasing content and then fixing it over time. They STILL haven't fixed the bugs pertaining to Rogue's "vanish" skill - and that bug has been around for a long.... LONG time.
So a 41 point talent isn't as hot as hunters would like it to be - and now every other classes 41 point talent is "overpowered" right? Wrong. Just because one talent isn't as up to par as it could be shouldn't delay the release of what is shaping up to be a very exciting expansion.

Seems to me they are just being more forthcoming with where the game will fall short. Agree with everyone's comments about how BC came out needing work.
Balius Sep 25th 2008 8:03PM
We've had talent point revisions before, in fact EVERY patch has had at least a few. Why is it suddenly game breaking for the talent trees to be changed later?
Players need to whine less...

Sorry but I have to say I think this is really blowing something out of proportion.
If this was written on the official forums you'd be banned by Tigole's deep breath ;)

Blizzard: There we go! Spirit Beasts and Rhinos and T-Rexes! Yeah! Wow, Hunter is looking great!
Tester: Hey, we noticed you guys really didn't help out any Hunter spec except Beastmastery...
Blizzard: Wa-huh!? There's other trees besides Beastmastery? Throw something in there that doesn't even work, those guys won't even spec that after they see our new awesome exotic pets!
Blizzard: The Hunter class is being renamed Beastmaster and the other Talent Trees are being removed. Anyone who QQs is banned from the forums.

Am I reading some of these comments correctly? You are upset because a talent was moved, they said they don't think it's "sexy" enough for the position it's in and want to make some changes to it but won't do it until after the expansion is released? That's not a bug. It's an enhancement.
They say the animation for a spell will be updated after the release of WotLK. Not a bug. Wanting to upgrade the graphics on something but deciding it's hardly priority enough to delay a release is perfectly acceptable.
I can't believe how people are reacting. You'd think that there are entire classes not functional or something. I don't get it. Neither of these things is worth holding off a release for.
Whatever, people can freak out over nothing if they want to. I just don't have to understand it.
jay Sep 25th 2008 8:40PM
Just like the 'questionable' graphical change to volley, not game breaking and was easily removed.
RC Sep 25th 2008 8:35PM
"Even Ghostcrawler mentioned that the 51-point talent Riptide wasn't going to ship with the intended sounds and animation."
The original 51 resto talent spirit link was removed cause they couldn't get it to work before the release date.
