Breakfast Topic: So you're in the Beta now too
If you've hopped onto the Beta realms recently, you may have noticed the heavy lag that's been going on ever since the last wave or two of testers were accepted. If you are one of those testers who entered so late in the process, then you, like myself, might be finding that despite your best efforts, the lag does tend to color your opinions and feedback about the various quests.
Personally, I try to add into the comments section that I might have rated the quest as more fun had I not died twice, failed to pick up the items faster than the characters with whom I was competing, or spent what felt like forty minutes trying to kill X number of mobs.
Nonetheless, while certain experiences seem so novel and interesting, others can drive players right back to the live realms because they get sick of investing so much time and effort into something that simply does not work with so much lag, or listening to the complaining and counter-insulting that goes on in the chat channels.
Are you stuck wishing you'd been able to enter the Beta when the population was more stable? Are you forging on, or have you mostly forgotten about your key and chosen to wait until release on November 13th? Were you an early tester who is now annoyed with the increase in lag and annoying behavior?

I got a beta key with the last wave, and I can say its not so great, the server is really laggy, I barely can shoot a spell.
But there were some benefits as well:
-Saw Stormwind harbor - impressive!!!
-Saw my retro-achievements.
-Saw some spells
-Saw DK's
Now Im playing again on my live char, trying to complete and getting ready for the achievements I saw uncompleted on beta :)

Pretty much the same for me. I probably have less than 2 hours /played on the Beta, and that's with my 70 rogue and my 56 or 57 DK combined. I saw the SW harbor and Borean Tundra and had to turn my graphics down to "low" just to get above 6fps (on my Dell XPS 400). Now it's just back to leveling my priest and doing BG's.

Same for me. Took a tour of the harbor on my character copy toon, but once I got to northerland the lag was just to horrible.
So switched up and created a DK, lag was a bit better due to phasing technology but at times a bit hard. Once I got out of the DK starting areas though the lag hit again so abandoned that server as well.
Then used a premade 80 toon to wander around Dalaran figure out where everything is, and now...back to the live realms. If I had tried to level a toon up through all that lag I'd just hate the expansion when it actually drops.

I also came in on the last wave. The DK starting area was really bad, but once i got on to outland it's been way better. I've set all the video settings to the lowest possible setting

I still venture into Northrend, but not nearly as often or as long as before the lag got so bad. 'Course it's always been high, but the last wave of keys didn't seem to include more server capacity.

I've had the beta key for over a month, I've played some but honestly, the lag just makes it unplayable, so I quit.

^^ pretty much, yup.

Ditto.

I hate that you're whining about getting into the Beta at all.
Being a beta tester is living the dream, it's helping to make a game into something with your fingerprints on it. There are many people who can't do anything more than read the Beta forums and wish they could help to make it better. I understand the lag is bad, but they need to know how things run under laggy conditions too, bugs sometimes are at their worst in those situations, that's when they need to be found.
All in all, you whining about the lag, a perpetual problem in any Beta is only insulting to those who still want to help.

Yes, but what you also have seemingly forgotten to mention is that for the beta Blizzard made three servers for the US and only one combined server for the EU/Oceanic/Korean testers when around 60% of their player base comes from OUTSIDE the US.
I played it for two nights, just to see the Death Knight quests and if I was playing in the normal live server environment, I could honestly give Blizzard an excellent score for coming up with new and exciting content.

I play on the EU PTR.
Now the lag is ok, but one week ago was really bad.
What can you test if to do anything you must wait 2/3 seconds?
I submitted 2 bug reports regarding not working talents, and they are not fixed after almost 10 days.
A report about missing achievements, not fixed.
Developers don't seem to listen to any suggestion (on the Beta forum, on the EU PTR forum they're simply MIA)

I both agree and disagree with you.
While it is shiny to get a beta, the folks who leave their imprints are the ones who get in early. They're the ones who test the talents, abilities and spells and it is their feedback which molds and shapes what the final game is.
The latecomers are merely bodies to be used to stress-test the servers and possibly copy over a pre-made for shiggles.
I received a beta late, and in retrospect, I wish I had given my key to any number of guildmates who would have cut off their gaming hands for theirs. I leveled my DK to 58, dabbled with Inscription on my main (until the beta's economy made it impossible for me to level the skill), but honestly my time is better spent gearing myself up for the expansion. There is no feedback I can provide that is relevant at this stage of development.

I was one of the fortunate last wavers, and was so anxious to see all the sights. Due to the lag and the fact in a couple of weeks I'll be doing it again. I quit playing beta and decided to wait for the release.
Traex Sep 26th 2008 8:16AM
Yes it is very lagged but it doesnt ever bother me too much. Most of the time I don't even realize its the population of the server over the testing being done. The way I look at it is that it is a beta server, testing is going on left and right and lag is going to happen, why stress?
Tyvlen Sep 26th 2008 8:16AM
I gave up on it, the lag was just soo horribl, my g/f is playing the heck out of my beta tho. think she fell inlove with the dk's, i'll stick with my healbot.
Fantus Sep 26th 2008 8:16AM
I try and play in the morning or early afternoons during the weekday, best time really too test it.
Avoid it during the weekends though :p

I've been in the Euro Beta since it started, and we've had crippling lag on our single server since week 2. We've never been given an explanation as to why our server is so awful compared to the US's 3 servers, though. Maybe now Blizzard will actually look at the issue, rather than ignore it like they have so far.
Phoenixblight Sep 26th 2008 8:37AM
Do they just pull articles out their butt now? For the past week I have seen these "bloggers" turn nothing but into big babies. "Oh he stole my horse" "Oh too much lag to play, Waaaa Waaa.
There is a real nice solution for Beta I have found for the lag and it happens to be avoid peak hours 4-10pm. Anything before or after then and the lag is practically Nil. Beta is a privilege and if wanted to read this type of garbage to ruin my time, I could just go to the General Forums.

I find that I have to seek out quiet areas and times to really enjoy the beta and get anything done. My flying tour of Northrend was delightfully lag-free and one of the most incredible experiences I remember in this game. I also found about 30 mysterious dismount spots, which made me awfully glad that I'm a Mage on the beta.
The battlegrounds haven't been *too* bad, either - Strand of the Ancients has performed well for me every time I've tried it so far. (And if you haven't tried it, GO NOW! GO!)
Axolotl Sep 26th 2008 8:39AM
With about one month and a half to release, it's not worth the bother anymore (okay, maybe it is but hang in there), the guides on how to powerlevel inscription are out there, so we can prepare for that, and starting-guides on Deathknights can be assembled by those who can mix and match the peaces of the puzzle that's all over the internet (using wowwiki and wowinsider is a good start)
Besides, if you have marks, but not enough honor to spend them on stuff, you might wanna make work of that considering the reset that is comming up.
Better gear to start Northrend = Faster leveling in Northrend
