The threat concern is irrelevant, the reason Magma Totem has threat reduction and Fire Nova doesn't is that Fire Nova dies when it deals damage. Neither totem generates threat for you, they generate it only for the totem.

This is especially important when you are AEing in a raid situation, as you can open up with AE totems without regard to threat, while the mages and locks have to wait a few seconds or risk death, at worst, your totem will die.
