The Care and Feeding of Warriors: Itemization in Wrath part one
When I said I'd talk about itemization for warriors in Wrath, I did so fully knowing that it is at present incomplete. New gear comes in with every beta patch, so even if you take every single item currently present into account it doesn't necessarily provide you with an accurate picture of the way it will all shake out once you actually set foot in Northrend. So keeping in mind that not only can this all change tomorrow but that we're talking about gearing the most gear dependent class in the entire game, let's start looking at what gear we're going to require at 80. The defense cap at level 80, for instance, is going to be 540 defense requiring 689 defense rating. For a fury TG build, you're looking to overcome 15% hit penalty on specials, meaning that you'll be stacking roughly 500 hit rating at level 80 (based on this forum post which seems like a pretty good test bed to me) not to mention all the crit and AP you'll need to be effective. Frankly, I think the defense gear will be easier to assemble than the hit gear. For arms, of course, you won't need nearly as much hit, making an Arms DPS build substantially easier to gear for. (To be fair, a fury DPS build designed around Impale, Rampage and Incite would also be easier to gear for.)
Of course, the real issue isn't "Does the gear exist" but rather "How easy is it for me to assemble a reasonably effective set for what I want to do?" Does a newly 80 prot warrior have a chance to tank the instances and heroics? What about a DPS warrior, will he be effective? So far, it seems that the gear exists, but can be somewhat difficult to assemble: the introduction of faction vendors in the most recent beta builds actually goes to help in these situations. This week we're going to look at the faction rewards and see what warriors would be interested in. There's also instance drops, crafted items and PvP rewards to consider before all's said and done, but we have to start somewhere.
Argent Crusade
- Special Issue Legplates - solidly itemized tanking legs. The defense on them is a touch low considering that you're aiming for 10 times that rating to hit the defense cap, but certainly for a level 78 tank (especially if you're leveling from scratch and don't have access to really awesome gear from before the expansion) the strength, stamina, hit rating and defense on one item combined with two sockets makes these worth picking up.
- Argent Skeleton Crusher - A solid enough arms weapon to tide you over while you're looking for something better in an instance or through PvP/crafting.
- Fang-Deflecting Faceguard - A solid enough starter DPS helm for you as you enter the level 80 instances, it's really suited for an Arms build as well. It could be worn on a tank as a threat piece if you already have all the defense you need, but starting at 80 that's fairly unlikely.
- Zombie Sweeper Shotgun - This is the clear winner for warriors, with hit, AP and crit. If you're looking to DPS at 80 you're going to want as much hit as you can get your hands on.
- Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector - Necessary for any tank looking to hit that defense cap to begin running 10 and 25 man raiding. It's got nice stamina too.
- There are two shoulder enchants of interest to warriors, with two tiers between them. The Greater and Lesser Inscriptions of the Pinnacle and the Greater and Lesser Inscriptions of the Axe. Clearly, tanking warriors are going to want Sons of Hodir reputation as fast as they can get it, while the lack of hit on the Axe inscriptions means that they are less less important for DPSing warriors (again, Arms and the Impale/Rampage/Incite build will be less invested in hit rating). You'll still get them, of course, as there is currently no alternative shoulder enchant available, although this could clearly change.
- Stalactite Chopper is an interesting option for a tank or DPS warrior. The speed and stats would certainly make it a good DPS option, but stam and a good amount of damage on Devastates (especially now that Devastate has been reverted to 50% of weapon damage) means that you might want to carry this around and switch in and out to lay five of them on with it before you get better.
- Spaulders of the Giant Lord are also interesting. Sadly lacking in hit, they have good strength and crit but continue the trend of high stam on DPS plate that attempts to push warriors in a direction that doesn't really seem to make a lot of sense. If for some reason you were defense capped, or just wanted good threat pieces, they'd be okay for a tanking warrior but they're sub-par for anyone, really, be it arms, fury or a hybrid build. Still, when you hit 80 you probably don't have much better.
The Kalu'ak
- Ivory-Reinforced Chestguard is another solid, if unremarkable, piece which will allow you to add some defense rating and threat stats to a slot. I'd prefer the defense rating be higher, but it's clearly intended for tanking while leveling to 80 and should work well for that role.
- The Whalebone Carapace is yet more DPS plate with no hit and more stamina than I'd like.
The Wyrmrest Accord
- The Wrymrest Accord are very nice to tanks. They offer the Cloak of Peaceful Resolutions, with a nice chunk of stats a tank might want to start with.
- They follow this up with the Fang of Truth. Also probably a solid rogue weapon, it has a nice speed if you're still looking to spam Heroic Strike while tanking, Agility to add to armor, Stamina and hit rating. While there are definitely better tanking weapons this is a no brainer when you hit honored.
- At revered you'll be picking up the Breastplate of the Solemn Council. A very solid tanking threat BP with a better chunk of defense for that cap of 690 you're shooting for. While you're there, why not pick up the Sabatons of Draconic Vigor? There is no reason why not, just get the shoes.
- At exalted you can get the Legplates of Bloody Reprisal. I really wish these had crit or hit on them.
The Kirin Tor
- Amazingly, the mages of the Kirin Tor do not offer a lot of warrior plate. Who would have thought? However, all tanking warrors should be looking at the Fireproven Gauntlets. Dodge, Defense, Stam and Str... not bad at all. I'd like the defense a little higher with that big cap in mind, but it's not bad for a hand slot item.
Knights of the Ebon Blade
- I find some of the rewards the Knights of the Ebon Blade offer to be puzzling. Death Knights can't use fist weapons, and yet here's Unholy Persuader, a reasonable offhand fist weapon.
- Similarly, they can't use shields, and so here's Toxin-Tempered Boots, tanking options with Block Value. As a warrior I like boots with Block Value, but... what's the deal? Are the DK's just handing out the crap they can't use from their former lives as faction rewards?
- Well, at least the DPS boots have a chance to give you some hit if you socket them properly, I guess. The Death-Inured Sabatons continue the trend of disappointing me with their itemization.
- Reaper of Dark Souls is a solid DPS option which could also work as a tanking item if you're looking for hefty Devastates. I'd suggest picking up a fast and slow tanking weapon in order to adjust your threat to the situation.
- Finally, for arms warriors there's the Runeblade of Demonstratable Power. It's not perfectly itemized but it has crit, haste and a solid dose of AP. Yet again it lacks hit. Sigh. I have to admit I like the name. "My power is demonstratable!" It's nice to see so tangible a goal.
Frenzyheart Tribe and The Oracles
- Not a lot of rewards between the two so I combine them: the Wolverine dudes offer you the Giant-Sized Gauntlets (which, while clearly intended for tanking, lack defense so you may end up using them as DPS gear just to get some hit rating somewhere... oh, who am I kidding? You'll wear leather), the Stolen Vrykul Harpoon and the Frenzyheart Insignia. If you like haste, these are your boys.
- The Oracles, on the other hand, offer you Gold Star Spaulders which, of course, have no hit and a lot of stamina for DPS, and the Oracle Talisman of Ablution. Hard to say no to that much crit, even if I don't know what the 'beneficial resources' are. Hopefully rage is in there.
If you add up all the defense rating on the highest available option from these vendors, you'll be sitting at 389 defense rating. While this is slightly more than half of what you'll need to be uncrittable at 80, it doesn't take into account rings, trinkets, a helm, belt, bracers or shoulders, much less a weapon with defense on it. We'll cover where to find those items in the next post.
For DPS, clearly a TG build is at a huge disadvantage looking at these rewards. For a DPS warrior, Arms or the Impale/Rampage/Incite build are far more viable at the newly 80 level of itemization. We'll discuss instance drops for those various specs as well next week, keeping an eye on what's changed between patches.

A lot of these items are low on Defense because Blizz wants crit immunity to be much harder to get in Wrath than it was in BC. Most Warrior tanks were Crit immune before they went into Karazhan or quickly after getting some gear from there. Ghostcrawler has stated that most tanks (especially DKs) will not become crit immune until getting the full tanking set from Naxx-10. This is fine since crushing blows are gone, and crits will land less often as your gear gets better.

Worrying about the hit for titan's grip on pre-raid gear is minor. Warriors have always scaled really well, and you don't think that having two weapons that typically have about 25% more damage potential, as well as how well they scale with instant attacks, shouldn't have some penalty? for PvE, hit rating is the kind of stat that gets built up more and more as you progress through raiding, starting at a smaller level across the board. Getting capped early on any stat is detrimental to setting up a consistent, balanced gear progression.
Alar Sep 26th 2008 6:16PM
Some people don't really raid, or if they do, it's more casual than others. The new 10-man raids will, of course, open the door towards more casual players, but what about people who just enjoy questing and doing 5-man instances with friends or guildmates? If all the good hit gear is raid only, Fury's shining star will be a waste.
Atros Sep 26th 2008 7:42PM
True enough that it won't be a huge deal outside raiding as things currently stand... but is that such a bad thing? If you're raiding with things needing a larger dps base, what do you need oh-so-massive dps for anyway? I don't have a fury warrior, so I know that my take is biased enough, but are you hitting things enough when doing dailies/farming/etc to make things die at a reasonable level? Eventually, with pretty much every level, there gets to be a point where when raid geared for DPS, things are overkill as far as whether it makes farming more efficient anyway. Typically, this point comes fairly early in progression anyway, where the further upgrades are intended to let you face more difficult raid content. From what I see on beta, there is hit gear scattered all around anyway, so its not too difficult to gear for it for solo play, although you would trade off things like crit/expertise/strength for it. This is one talent that, while in its curent incarnation, is 'fun' while leveling up, but designed to truly shine as you progress into raid content, where both the fact that you get more hit baked into gear inately, and the fact that 2h weapons have double the item budget as far as stat allocation, make it truly spectacular.
Matthew Rossi Sep 26th 2008 7:43PM
Do me a favor, Atros. The next time someone complains that their 51 point talent, whatever it is, isn't so impressive, remind them that they're supposed to be in high end raid gear before their 51 point investment doesn't hurt their DPS to use.
Right now, even at high hit, TG hurts your DPS. It's that simple.
Atros Sep 26th 2008 7:52PM
Titan's Grip isn't the only 51 point talent that seems unimpressive. But rather then having this digress into "My class/spec has it worse then yours", I will put it down to the fact that things are still beta and that everything is still in flux. At least Titan's Grip, while being a pain to properly balance, still has the 'oh cool' factor to make you want it to work. There are other talents that are rather bleh, or won't even be done before release.
Fallout Sep 27th 2008 1:37AM
Going from live to beta on my warrior, if i take TG, i lose about 200 dps. This is because of the huge miss penalty. Negating the miss penalty is possibly the single most important goal of any fury warrior that take's titan's grip. ~25% of fury's dps comes from Bloodthirst, which isn't affected by weapon damage (but still has the 15% increased miss penalty). Whirlwind is the only instant attack that a fury warrior has that is affected by weapon damage, and is on a 10s cd, it accounts for ~8% of our dps. Slam with the new talents becomes instant after a Bloodthirst crit, at 30% crit, that's roughly once every 18 seconds. Slam won't be a huge part of our dps (it turns out to be about 2-4% on beta for me). The huge miss penalty makes instant slams even less reliable. The rest of our damage is white damage and heroic strikes. Heroic strike hits only with the mh and is on next attack. So yes it does scale better with a 2h when looking at the damage alone, but you're getting fewer HS's off with a slow weapon, so the increase to dps isn't huge. Heroic Strike is about 25% of my dps. And that will be dropped by 15% because of the hit penalty. The extra stats given by having a second 2h weapon are totally offset by the garbage plate dps itemization. If you compare dps leather to dps plate of equal leather, the leather gear actually has MORE stats on it. Example:
http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/news/2008/september/naxxramas_25_85.jpg
http://static.mmo-champion.com/mmoc/images/news/2008/september/naxxramas_25_150.jpg
You lose .03% hit chance and 500 useless hp and gain 1.25% crit chance by choosing the leather. Also 1 Stam = 1.5 Agi. To equal the Agi on the leather there should be either 52 more stam on the plate or ~34 more Str. So not only is the stat allocation terrible, there are less stats on the plate. This goes for every plate dps piece, from TBC and onward. There is no reason to choose plate over leather for a fury warrior almost ever. Not even when taking the new Armored to the Teeth talent into consideration does the plate come close to matching the leather.
Really, TG isn't fun when leveling. It's infuriating. Your chance to hit decreases every level because rating scales down. And at 60 when you can first get the talent, there is almost no hit rating gear anywhere.
TG isn't just unimpressive without huge amounts of hit rating. It's a loss to overall dps. It totally destroys your ability to tank or off tank. And it makes everything in PvP a dice roll. TG is a garbage talent and only manages to highlight how bad Blizzard has designed plate dps gear (Tier 6 fury gear for example).
token Sep 26th 2008 5:45PM
defense goal...not a cap. So tired of hearing that...
wizeguy Sep 28th 2008 7:52PM
Yeah I must admit this makes me pretty nervous... Seriously blizzard, thanks, but no thanks, I don't need more stam! You know those mages with like 1500 spell power, 12k mana, and 8k health? THATS what fury gear should be! Those titansteel things do look pretty sweet, I looked at the helm and shouted "Yes! No stam!" Anyway, if it doesn't improve I'll just go arms to dps, its a good thing my guildies love me! :D
Breck Sep 26th 2008 6:09PM
Every time I see that stupid plate helmet from Wrath I think of Nien Nunb from Star Wars.
Joester Sep 26th 2008 6:16PM
Im SORRY but Resilience dosn't work outside of BGs anymore in WotLK.. kthnx.. find more gear then Welfear Gear.
Bout' time.
dan Sep 26th 2008 8:43PM
When the oracle trinket mentions beneficial resources that means rage, energy, mana, runic power. Not sure of the values it returns but there ya go.
Krugeroff Sep 27th 2008 2:59AM
in BC, I was able to cobble together a set of crit immune tanking gear at 68. 490 defense? np. Between watching the AH for " ..of the Champion" gear and banking quest rewards, it was fairly easy.
Being crit immune should be a goal of a tank, especially one who is serious about raiding. but not for regulars, and apparently they want to make it so you don't actually get those stats unless you are serious about tanking.
THANK GOD, I say, to resilience not working outside of BGs/Arenas. I am not a raiding snob, but it seriously did irritate me when I would be on an alt pugging somewehre and see the tank come in wearing S2 gear, like that automatically qualified him to tank. Almost always have a worse experience that the guy who was in all blues, but appropriate stat gear.
TankTronic Sep 27th 2008 7:24AM
You keep talking about all the def rating required in WotLK, but Im guessing a level 80 warrior will have 400 def with no bonus rating, so is the 689 def rating from gear required just to take 400 -> 540?
KaonNemesis Sep 27th 2008 9:53AM
For tanks, I believe you forgot to factor in the base 400 defense that will have (5 def per level)...
Elyx Sep 27th 2008 9:57AM
I don't think +hit is going to be our greatest adversary as levels increase. Especially at cap, let's remember theres plenty of gear to yet be discovered at level cap, non withstanding that badge and raid gear hasn't hit yet...warriors weren't uber DPS until they started getting t4+ (or higher) in BC.
My concern is the lackluster DPS in fury, especially compared with prot now. Im seriously considering respeccing my warrior prot to lvl thru BC simply due to the more universal application of decent DPS, as well as tankability. Blizz said they wanted to make all the talent trees able to tank in a pinch, as well as provide DPS, but it really looks like they just buffed prot dps, and fury warriors were left out to dry :P
Guess well see...im sure ill be building a prot set as well as a fury set, and no reason why i cant go back and respec once numbers show otherwise :) or i can just go play my pally, or shaman...
Fallout Sep 27th 2008 2:38PM
Fury warriors still aren't doing amazing dps at the sunwell level of gear. Classes that supposedly don't scale as well as warriors, like hunters and warlocks, are doing more dps mashing fewer buttons at all levels of gear.
And the 15% hit penalty on TG applies to all damaging abilities, so your ability to hold agro when offtanking with TG is effectively removed.
Brunson Sep 27th 2008 1:15PM
yes.
540(defense needed to be uncrittable) - 400(inherent defense for being lvl 80) = 140 (defense needed from gear/talents)
but
at lvl 70, it takes 2.36 def rating to get one defense
http://www.wowwiki.com/Defense
at lvl 80 it is currently calculated to take 4.92 defense rating to get one defense.

Hey Rossi, any talk of D4? I know theres some nice BS crafted gear, just wondering if its out there. Also, for the rest of you, there are a lot of green quest rewards with +hit that will do you just fine starting out, don't rush to judge an items' color.
Heres the link of Quest gear wih hit.
