My friend and I have been arguing recently over the death of the demigod Cenarius. I was hoping for some clarification. I (a diehard Nelf) say that Cenarius was only protecting the forest the orcs were cutting, while she (a Nelf turned Hordie) says that Cenarius attacked the Orcs for no reason and their only choice was to kill him. Which one of us gets the bragging rights?
It's a little bit of both. Deities like gods and demigods operate in a different way than mortals in WoW. The gods are almost a bit primordial. They have a very clear, defined purpose, and they serve that purpose. Cenarius did what he thought was right. He did what his nature told him to do. He is a guardian of the forest, and someone was damaging it. His instinct is to stop what is happening to it, immediately. So yes, he was definitely protecting the forest.
Cenarius didn't necessarily go about it the right way in the eyes of mortal men, but in the realm of the demigods what he did was right on. That was his duty. His sole purpose. His existence was to protect the forests, so that's what he went out to do. It definitely wasn't for "no reason" but to us, it was probably not the best choice of action. Cenarius is/was a force of nature, not a diplomat, though. You can only expect him to act as a force of nature would act.
Even the Orcs should understand that, being so close to Shamanism. The elements are forces of nature, obviously, and they act in much the same way. If you do a quest for a Fire Elemental, they're not going to ask you to do a rain dance. They're going to ask you to burn some stuff.

Now, when the Titans imprisoned the Old Gods, it was because they knew that if they killed them, Azeroth would suffer. So why hasn't anything horrible happened due to C'thun's death? Or is he just slumbering until the next time, when the stars are right?
C'Thun really may not be dead at all. What we fought in Ahn'Qiraj was one eyeball, some tentacles, and occasionally he would swallow you and you'd need to escape his stomach which could easily hold multiple 40 man raids. There is probably more to his body than that. Squishing the massive exposed eyeball was progress against him, and probably a really impressive move considering it was done by mortals.
There's a very good chance C'Thun is still alive and well. He'll just be wearing a really big eyepatch next time we see him, and be missing a few tentacles.

I'm a lore noob. Where would a lore noob go for a complete overview of the WoW lore and storyline? I'd like to start at the beginning and not have to dig through piles and piles of websites and articles for both the "big picture" and the "small details."
WowWiki is going to be your best resource if you want to keep it to one place. Be warned that it's a wiki, so you'll occasionally run into inaccuracies, but usually they're pretty good. If in doubt about something, check and make sure they have a source cited. If you want to start at the beginning of the Orc/Human (Horde/Alliance) conflict, start at the First War and then let your mind roam from there.
Yarr, there be spoilers beyond this line! Turn back if ye want to be surprised in Wrath o' the Lich King!

Who built the three crystalline spires in the east, west, and north of Un'Goro Crater? It must have been done AFTER Un'Goro was created, of course, but far enough back that noone knows of the origins.
Those were built by the Titans. Un'goro Crater was one of two major areas of experimentation for them. Those were the places were they toyed around with creating new species and forms of life and things like that.
The pylons were built to keep out "the bad guys" to put it simply. Things that would go against life, and the Titans' creations. Things that would screw up th habitat they put there. For example, the pylons would keep out things like the Burning Legion and the Scourge since they are very anti-Titan and anti-Life.
It might have been those pylons that stopped the Qiraji from chasing the Night Elves into Un'goro at the War of the Shifting Sands, but that's still just a guess. It's a fairly decent guess, because the Silithid are in southern Un'goro where there is no pylon. They burrowed in around the back rather than getting near the pylons.

My question is a WotLK spoiler question: Where did Darion Mograine come from (since he was suppose to be in outland) and how did he become in possesion of the corrupted Ashbringer?
mko Sep 29th 2008 11:02AM
I belive it will be explained in Ashbringer comic
Suzaku Sep 29th 2008 5:17PM
You'll need to follow the Ashbringer comic mini-series to get the full story. Only one issue has been released so far, but it did explain quite a bit about the Mograine family.
This is what's been uncovered so far (major spoiler warning):
Darion is the second son of Alexandros and Elena Mograine, and Elena died during childbirth. Of the two sons, Renault takes after Alexandros, and Darion takes after Elena. As a result, Alexandros thought of Darion as his last link to his wife, and he became the favored son. This caused Renault to feel a certain amount of resent.
After the forging of the Ashbringer, Alexandros would eventually attempt to retake Stratholme with other members of the Silver Hand, and both Darion and Renault accompanied them, with Renault charged with the task of protecting Darion. During this failed raid, Darion was injured and the Dreadlord Balnazzar took up residence in Dathrohan's body.
Renault got chewed out by his father for not protecting Darion, and Balnazzar-Dathrohan, conspiring with Varimathras to kill Alexandros, began to manipulate Renault. In time, Dathrohan would be one of the founders of the Scarlet Crusade, which Renault would join, and the story that's already known would play out.
From the previews for upcoming issues of The Ashbringer, it appears that Darion Mograine will be part of the official Argent Dawn group that canonically fought through Naxxramas in the Eastern Plaguelands. From what little information is available, we know that Darion confronts Alexandros and ends up stabbing himself in the heart with the Corrupted Ashbringer, freeing his father but binding himself to service under the Lich King in his place.
The stuff about him being in Outland has, presumably, been retconned, or can simply be chalked up to being a rumor, like many of the other mentions of the Ashbringer in WoW.

With Cenarius, at the stage he joined the fight, then the only answer was to attack the orcs. However, it was the stupidity of the Nelfs that got it there in the first place.
Instead of approaching the orcs to request they stop cutting down the trees, they attacked. And sealed the fate of their beloved demi-god.
Matthew Rossi Sep 28th 2008 10:46PM
Yes, it's a shame orcs can't do things like leave, or retreat, or stop cutting down trees.
Karl Sep 29th 2008 8:49AM
Why should they? It's not like the night elves gave any quarter to the trolls when they took their land and scattered their people.
It's a bit rich, and a bit late, for the night elves to start complaining about other races on "their land".
Kevin Oct 4th 2008 11:16PM
Well the sentinels were always a bit stealthy about protecting Ashenvale. It's not like the moment the horde walked into the forest a Nelf greeting party was there, or even a Nelf army to attack them. It was more like they just chilled and lumberjacked for a bit then out of nowhere they start getting hit with arrows and focused starlight and shit. Understandably, especially considering Hellscream was their leader, they flipped shit and killed Cenarius. And keep in mind I'm a Hardcore Nelf Druid, I just think it's cooler when our races have flaws then when they're Sugar Spice and Everything nice. Complications are not just for the Horde!
Also anyone else thinking CoT? Cenarius would make an AWESOME boss fight!
XvampyrexrisingX Sep 28th 2008 8:39PM
Yay! Thank you very much. The insight into the Orc/Kaldorei conflict is very appreciated.
...C'Thun with an eyepatch? arr, methinks 'twould a challenge wort'y of being told in a dingy tavern in Tortuga with a minstrel on me lap! (a little late for Talk Like A Pirate Day, but oh well)
all the best~
onetrueping Sep 28th 2008 9:27PM
Methinks ye want a strumpet on yer lap, ye dog, not some pansy wot thinks 'e deserves cash fer flailin' away at some poor cat's innards an' singin' off key, aye.
XvampyrexrisingX Sep 28th 2008 11:54PM
ay, ye be right sharp. ...how do you say "poor choice of words on my part" in pirate? eh, why not.
"it be a poor choosing of words on my part, it is"
Zep Sep 28th 2008 8:42PM
Whoa, I had no idea pylons were for that.
The Artist formally known as Jesus Sep 28th 2008 8:58PM
Being that useful, you'd think someone would tell the Titans to construct addition pylons.
Cowbane Sep 28th 2008 9:47PM

As Gelbin Mekkatorque ever done something to contribute to the world around him? Poor little guy seems to do nothing nowadays. I'm sure as leader of the Gnomes, he could do a lot to help the people of Azeroth.
miko Sep 29th 2008 1:12AM
Mekkatorque is responable for the Deeprun Tram the new models of Dwarven flying machines though he shares the credit for these works because Gnomes always work in pairs.
he will also, no doubt, be responsable for the 'Mekkatorque' (whatever that is) as Gnomes are expected to take on the name of their greatest achievement at around the age of 30. i'm sure i remember reading somewhere that this is a form of small but high torque motor which makes the various Gnomish mechs and Gnomes Mechanostriders viable but i can't find a source on that.
Grimgore Sep 28th 2008 9:11PM
I was wondering if there was anything in the lore that implies that demonic blood could empower any races other than orcs? And if not, what is it about orcs that makes them so susceptible to demonic taint? Does that imply some sort of common ancestry?
Watcherzero Sep 29th 2008 4:52AM
Yes, The demons empowered some of their Night elf followers during the war of the ancients, these night elfs were mutated into the Satyrs. While it doesnt state blood was used, some other infusion of fel energies was performed.
Daelin Sep 28th 2008 9:35PM
I think both Alex and especially Farrell, may has some misconception regarding Cenarius. Have you played Reign of Chaos or any of the War of the Ancients books?
I will give you a example: Just what if, someone enter your house or country without jurdicistion and trash your house. Would you kill him, call the cops? You guys are saying that the Horde was more "diplomative" about this whole situation. You know would know that Grom Hellscream is kinda off an asshole or an arrogant one. When the Humans arrived at Kalimondor, Thrall entrusted Hellscream to leave the humans alone. Saying "Do you feel it, Thrall? it's like the old days... like the demons are here. (Hellscream was alive during the First-Second War) Thrall then didn't trust him, instead he told him to travel to the north to do "manual labor" because the Barrens don't have much lumber to cut. While Thrall goes to Stonetalon Peak to visit the "Oracle", see Thrall wasn't there to see the Night Elves before, Hellscream.
The Night Elves then told Cenarius, that the Orcs were invading. Hint that Cenarius, never knew that this "new" Horde, he was referencing the old days, where the orcs were corrupted by demon blood and a part of the Burning Legion. The Night Elves fought back, centuries ago with Rhonin. Cenarius wasn't a dumbass. Just think for a second! Would you want an army under no juridistion to approached your lands and cut your trees for Lumber? Especially the Night Elves, every tree in Ashevale(thats where Grom went), is a living thing, and cutting them is like killing them. Its kinda similar to the LOTR: The Two Towers, when the orcs cut down the ents, for more lumber.
Like do you guys EVEN know anything about lore? Noone EVER knew that Thrall formed a new Horde that will practice Shamanism. Hellscream was a friend of Thrall but is arrogant like Daelin Proudmoore, he thinks that the Horde is still like the past and Daelin NEVER knew about this new leadership! Only Jaina knew when she visited the "Oracle".
So whose the Dumbass NOW!
If you don't believe me then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T__kvF-2Ubc&watch_response
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W8LtBKIjmU
Seriously stop contradicting. It feels like all of you didn't play Reign of Chaos or the novels. Saying that you're a Lore Master, is just ridculous. Horde hasn't have a perfect history and the Alliance too. But just know that no much people knew about Thrall's leadership.
Second: Aman' Thul, the god whom watches these lands, especially Un' Goro is the reason why those AQ mobs were unable to approached these lands. You see, Crater is like the "god lands", or if that is, in WoWwiki point of view. Much like some crater in the Real world around Asia or Europe (idk), expect that that crater doesn't have Devilsaurs. There is no technological related things in Un' goro, thats why, this crater inhabited devilsaurs and stuff from the pre-historic times.
Some are wrong and some are right. To be Honest, I take Lore very seriously, and if there is something stupid rumors stating that the Horde is perfect. That will affect amounts of bias, if you played the games and NOT contradict yourself because in this MMO. The Horde can "pwn" the Alliance anytime in Arena or PVP, and thats an excuse for saying the Horde is the BEST?
Just Bullshit!
Alex Ziebart Sep 28th 2008 9:39PM
Calm down there. I'm pretty sure you didn't even read what I wrote in this column before you insulted me. I never said the Orcs were "diplomative." Please, read the column before you insult me or other readers. Its very obvious that you didn't. Accusing me of Horde bias is absolutely hilarious. Really.
As for Un'goro: My answer came straight out of Wrath of the Lich King. If you disagree with the answer I gave, take it up with Chris Metzen and the development team at Blizzard and look up the definition of 'retcon.'
ROFL?! Sep 28th 2008 9:50PM
Calm the hell down fucktard.
