Brewfest tip for casters: Get both spell trinkets
If you're like me, you've been madly farming the elusive Great Brewfest Kodo since Brewfest began. Even when I was having a bit of hand trouble, my little dwarf found his way into Blackrock Depths to do beer-laden battle with the big, bad, belligerent brewmaster. But there's an important tip that you should remember while Brewfest continues.
The two spell trinkets are both useful to all spell casters (who don't out gear them) after the content patch unifies spell damage and spell healing into Spell Power. Right now, the Dark Iron Smoking Pipe is a spell damage trinket, and the Direbrew Hops is a healing trinket. But in the content patch, both will be turned to spell power -- the Pipe has 43 spell power and 155 on use, the Hops have 44 spell power, 153 on use.
Of course, this begs the question about how the Pipe and Hops will compare to other trinkets when the patch hits. Timbal's Focusing Crystal from Heroic Magister's packs 44 spell power. You'll have to decide whether you want an on-use bonus 154ish spell power from the brewfest trinkets, or Timbal's on-use proc for 285 to 475 extra damage. The Hex Shrunken Head from Zul'Aman is a clear upgrade from the Hops and Pipe, since it has more constant spell power and high on-use spell power.
Coren's dropped trinkets are equivalent to the 41-Badge trinkets purchaseable from G'eras. The Essence of the Martyr and Icon of the Silver Crescent are both slightly better than either Hops or Pipe since they have 44 spell power, and 158 spell power on use. But for 41 badges each, I'm probably not going to lose any sleep over 5 spell power every 2 minutes.
[Thanks Rikitiki for the tip!]

I know these trinkets don't share a cooldown with the badge trinket, but do they share a cooldown with each other?

nope, ive been popping both of them on my priest to put my bonus healing up to over +2400 when i need that extra push

Another tip: the shanker (dagger) is the only loot from Coren that can be DE'd. I know, I know, it's rare and all melee DPS want it, but I've actually seen it drop twice in groups where no one wanted it.
DE's into 1 or 2 Void Crystals.

No, they are considered different trinkets. Each triggers a 20 second global CD just like other similar "on use" trinkets to prevent triggering both at once, but after that you can trigger the other.

Got both of these for my holy pally, and as a casual with s2 honor gear and no kara runs under my belt these are a nice pve upgrades for myself.
With only 8 badges from the shattered sun dailies i was a ways off from ant gear.
kudos for Blizz for addung content to hrlp out the casuals out there!
ps they do not share a cool down with each other ;)

I'm wondering with the consolidation of all "haste" does a haste pot give you 400 spell haste for 15 seconds? That is like an extra 15 second heroism that stacks. I haven't tried on PTR yet.

I've been trying to get the hops on my mage since the fact it'll be a spell power trinket occurred to me. Unfortunately, the RNG has been annoying and dropped at most one per run, which inevitably ends up going to the group's healer who inevitably doesn't have it already. So, while my mage has managed to end up with a brewmaid and pipe (And a coin... Because God knows that doesn't constantly, to the point where I had a group of no shield users walk away from BRD each with their own joke coin.) he has yet to pick up some hops. Hopefully, I'll manage to find a group in the next day or two (They've become increasingly rare on my realm as people have lost interest.) Maybe even get a Kodo... Who am I kidding. I'm never going to win a Kodo drop.

It's funny how these drops work, because "getting the hops" has been a long-running joke with the groups I'm down there with. That's all we ever get. Literally, 3 out of 5 times it's the damned hops. I've seen the coin very little in comparison.
It almost doesn't seem 100% random, even though it's supposed to be, but some kind of strange formula working with the group make-up.

Future, I wish you were in my group. The coin dropped in 4 out of 6 times we encountered Coren.

You're welcome!

blizzards loot policy at the moment is ment to be random but not 100%. there is a low drop chance on stuff like the dire brew remote and the mounts of course, but for the trinkets it seems to be about 30-40% for each trinket. maybe 25%ish for the brewmaiden trinkets.
as for the group make up affecting the chances of something dropping, i seem to remember this being mentioned somewhere.
the itea is so that a +shadow damage trinket will only drop if a priest or a warlock is in the group. im not sure if i read it or thought it was a good idea.
in either case, it would make specialised loot tables like that alot easier on raids, and would probably be better than mixing all the gears stats together so that mages arent fighting with warlocks for a hard-to-diagnose drops.
the only downside is that a new system would have to be put in place, but when considering that wrath is comming out and all the new changes with it, it would be the ideal time to do it.
i dont know, maybe im just waffling on about nothing.
hope this helped :)

Incorrect use of "begs the question". This is a logical fallacy roughly equal to circular logic and has nothing to do with asking questions. Just saying, if you're going to write professionally you should write correctly :)
Past that, keep the articles coming and rock on!

It ended up taking me around 10 runs of BRD to finally get my Pipe, I got the Hops on like my second run, and started to feel at peace with not getting the Pipe when I realized that the healing will turn into spell damage, but lucky me I now have 2 damage trinkets.
Along the same lines, is there a definitive answer as to what is happening with the spell school specific damage? As a warlock I'm looking enviously at the Sapphiron's Wing Bone, which is spell hit and currently frost damage, and wondering if that'll turn into +spell hit and raw +spell power?

my +nature damage ring from kara (43 nature) turned into 35 spell power on beta, so i'd assume the same would go for frost/fire/etc.

After doing Brewfest for the millionth time, the dark iron smoking pipe seems to be the trinket with the lowest drop. My mage has only seen it drop once, and then lost the roll to a lv 68 holy priest who can't even use the damn thing for another 2 levels. Sometimes I really wonder how random these drops are.
Minidrake Sep 30th 2008 11:40PM
In all of my attempts, I've ended up with about six smoking pipe, five coins, two balebrew charms, a brightbrew charm, two empty mugs and NOT ONE BLOODY SHANKER.
Oh well. My rogue loves that Empty Mug. I just tossed everything else.

Timbal's effect is not on use, it's a chance on DoT tick. Thus Timbal's is better for classes that use primarily DoT's for dps, while Icon/Pipe/Essence/Hops would be better for a class that uses direct damage spells.

so the melee trinkets are the only ones that aren't usable simultaneously?

Ran Direbrew once the other day for the first time and both trinkets dropped. 'Just take it' the irate warrior said on the second drop! Very happy resto druid here :)
