Around Azeroth: Down in the underground
We at Around Azeroth do not support exploring the game map beyond the boundaries set by Blizzard, except of course when it results in a really cool screenshot. (As someone who used to lead tour groups into the Caverns of Time pre-BC, and who still possesses a screenshot map of Shadowmoon Valley with developer's notes scrawled across it, I really have very little room to criticize here.)
Lymara of <Critical Mass> on Bronzebeard-EU decided to make a solo expedition to Old Ironforge. But a draenei girl can't be down there alone, especially in such a pretty dress, so she brought along two guard dogs: her Grimtotem Spirit Guide and what seems to be a Worg Pup. Hopefully these beasties are enough to protect her from harm, or at least from lascivious Dark Iron dwarves.
Do you have any unusual World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We'd love to see it on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next!
Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing -- use alt-Z to remove it. Please, no more battleground scoreboards.

I've never managed to get in there - how did you do it!
Great to see an old friend having fun.

I've been there too!
But what's this "Shadowmoon Valley map with developer's notes scrawled on it" screenshot you speak of?
Keyra Oct 1st 2008 11:20AM
Agreed! I want to see that screenshot as well!
Come on, Elizabeth! You can't just drop in a teaser like that without at least throwing us a morsel or two!

I love that place! Last week I sent my whole guild down there and then joined myself when I got a warrior to spell reflect my poly.
Also, in Old Ironforge you're still in general chat for Ironforge, so I once went down there and announced that I would give 1k gold to the first person to open a trade window with me. I invited people to groups so they could find me faster... It was hilarious.

No one can blame you
For walking away
Too much rejection
No love injection
Life can be easy
It's not always swell
Don't tell me truth hurts, little girl
'Cause it hurts like hell (echo)
But down in the underground (oh oh oh oh oh)
You'll find someone true (down underground)
Down in the underground (oh oh oh oh oh)
A land serene (oh oh oh oh)
A crystal moon, ah, ah
It's only forever
Not long at all
Lost and lonely
That's underground
Underground

Here's something I've often pondered upon...if Blizzard doesn't want anyone going into old Ironforge...why is it still there?

Here is my Shaman getting down there a long time ago, lol.

I take no responsibility if you get banned, lol, but here is how to get down there.
You need to get the area which allows duels near the Great Forge. This is one of the halls near the FP. Look for a set of stairs, and walk under them. If you see your chat channel change to Dun Morogh, that's the spot. Now, duel either a Mage or a Warlock, and run from that area back towards the Great Forge. As soon as you enter the area, turn left, and jump up on the braizer, and onto the window ledge there. Have the Mage sheep you, or the Warlock Fear you. You will run thru the wall there and fall into the hallway leading down into Old IF.
You have to do this fast because as soon as you leave the duel area, the duel ending countdown begins, and you have to make it to the window ledge and actually jump up there before the duel ends.

I fail to understand what is so awful about player exploration in the first place. I've read warnings that expeditions to places like the Ironforge Airstrip and Shatterspear village are "bannable." WTF? What harm is done by exploring the gameworld?
Keyra Oct 1st 2008 4:32PM
I agree whole-heartedly. In fact, and specifically for Shatterspear, the place has such rich detail and you're teased and taunted with every fly-over, seeing them down there dancing and having a good time...
So we find a way to get there and we're...banned?
What, is this some sort of WoW gateway drug or something, so banning is your enforced rehab?
I just don't get it.
Malyfactian Oct 1st 2008 5:39PM
If Blizz really wanted these places to be off-limits, they would have completely prevented access through the use of obstacles.
But they didn't! Shatterspear village is ridiculously easy to reach, thanks to game mechanics like slowfall, levitation, noggenfogger, and pally bubbles. The Airstrip has one tricky jump at the very beginning. And the Elwynn waterfall involves no tricks at all.
It's not as if getting to these places involves hacking the game or something (in which case I would understand their concerns).

Yeah, I have 97% of the upside down castle completed...
Btw, thanks, shinken, for posting the whole thing.
