So, if I'm reading everything here and from the previous posts correctly, there doesn't seem to be much reason to stay a Smith. Yeah, you get two pieces of gear you can add a gem slot two that nobody else can have, but otherwise the gear you can make is lackluster and quickly replaced as you move into heroics and raiding.Engineers, however, get what appear to be one of the top entry level raid headpieces and the ability to make motorcycles, plus a number of other little doodads that everyone seems to want lately.Smithing should not be this pathetic.

From what I've read blacksmiths get to make 2 extra sockets into their gear. When epic gems factor in this gives quite a bonus over other professions. http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=55641 Socket Gloves (BS only)http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?spell=55628 Socket Bracer (BS only)http://wotlk.wowhead.com/?item=41611 Eternal Belt Buckle (BoE belt socket)Blacksmithing is far from pathetic.

Depends on how you look at it. In my view its Engineering that's pathetic, I do get goggles, but they're replaced in the Kara of WotLK. The signature item everyone knows is engineering, the motorcycle, is BoE and usable by non-Engineers. The "doodads" replace regular enchants and are inferior to them for regular use. Where you instead get as a BS extra sockets that apply even after you've geared up and stack with enchants.
