Ask WoW Insider: Is PvP gear still worth it?
Here's a good question from our email (it's ask at wow.com, if you've got a question for Ask WoW Insider). It's about PvP gear, and what to do about it in the few weeks left until the Wrath launch. We know now that Honor and marks are not getting wiped for sure, so Treecow wants to know what to do:My question is this, now that Wrath will be out in 6 weeks or so, does it really pay to get the S2 gear? Is it worth getting, even if it's going to be replaced within the first couple levels in Northrend, just to make those couple of levels easier? Or should I keep running quests and dailies? Or is there something else I should be doing that I haven't even thought about?
Thanks,
Treecow

If you ask me, dailies are the way to go at this point (and if you haven't gotten your rep up in some factions, dailies should help there, too), simply because gear will get quickly replaced and gold will always be useful. Not to mention that there are battleground dailies to do every day if BGs are what you'd rather play.
But on the other hand, I'm mostly a PvE-er, and who knows -- doing the PvP to buy PvP gear could be worth it in the long run. You might even get more gold out of selling items you'd normally be equipping in Wrath. Readers, what do you say to Treecow?

I did my PvP gear largely to get ahead where they were superior to where my guild was raiding. Probably will be obsolete before T6 is, but if it is good to get a head start, that's what I expected.

is it good... for what? For leveling? No. Just get blues in TBC and grab quest rewards in Northrend. If you're in PvE epics you won't find upgradse until 72 or beyond anyway.
For PvP? well yes, if you're going to PvP on the way to 80. If not, just get the level 80 PvP gear.
here's a radical thought... you could BG for... fun!

Wow, that is an extremely radical thought! Doing BGs to get some welfare epics to use until you can get some good gear is quite conventional thinking. The concept of enjoying them? - just too radical

Also if you're going to be leveling on a PvP server, it might be handy to have some relatively beefy armor to do it in. Survivability in quest rewards/greens is pretty low, especially for wimpy clothies like my priest.

I second Eliseth's comment -- making sure you have a bit of resilience as you level up on a PvP server is a good idea. Otherwise you won't see any of this important (tho annoying) anti-insta-gib stat until the crafted PvP gear at level 78.

I gotta admit... I've been PVPing in the PTR and it's been AWESOME!
Not once have I seen a "noob... get back on the flag" or "why isnt everyone rushing RH"
Even in games where the horde are out numbered 3 to 1, it seems like everyone is just having fun trying out their new talents.
And even as a mage... I don't mind dieing as much!

Personally, I'm finding that I'm having a lot of fun in BG's lately - not sure why. But that's neither here nor there.
Most of the PvP gear will probably go by the wayside fairly quickly in Wrath - but not all. My main is a lock, so I'm not certain about the other classes - but the Guardian's Necklace at least will be superior or comparable to most gear you will be getting for a while.
Note: My lock is geared in primarily T5/Badge gear, with some Hyjal/BT drops. In the beta, I'm teamed with a similarly geared spriest tearing mobs apart in the Basin - while still only level 70. So far, my only main character death since starting the beta (maybe 3 hours play time, due to RL constraints) was due to a *4* pull in a 75 zone. [I've spent more time on a DK, they're fun.]

Someone call Blizzard, quick!
BGs are fun? We can't have this! No! They must be work! They must be boring! They must be endless dying-fests! They must include no less than 3 people yelling at others and saying how this BG sucks and how everyone should just quit the game because of how bad they are!
Rabble! Rabble rabble rabble!

I'll probably keep my S2 gear for looks... mostly because warrior S2 looks too awesome to throw out.
Jewbanks Oct 6th 2008 7:46PM
If you dont have better gear s2 wont do you badly for leveling... but you could also just stack honor for wotlk
Im in beta and while mage is questing faster in t5/t6 gear my rogue whos mostly in blue with some kara drops and a green or two is having no problems
Seedcake Oct 7th 2008 4:42AM
Same here. I love the way the priest S2 gear looks! Just 4k more honor until I can pick up the last piece I need...and then I've decided I'm done with BGs for good.
I've never been a true PvPer at heart, but BGs have been my only option for better-than-quest-gear for a long time now, and now I'm just sick to death of them. :(
Hopefully I can find a raiding guild I can tolerate (I cling to the impossible dream of being a part of a helpful, active, progressing guild which is free of jerks, immaturity and drama)...or at the least, find one or a few nice people to Arena (badly) with me in the near future.

lol warrior s2 is the worst, especially that god-awful helm
Baluki Oct 6th 2008 7:47PM
Man, I'm so tired of people asking "is it worth it to do X?"
If you think something is fun, do it. If it isn't, don't. This is a game; don't forget that.
Zep Oct 6th 2008 7:47PM
Psh, I make 1500 whenever I feel like it off of Shartuul's badges of tenacity xDDD
Gear though, that you can't buy... and it's still a couple months till the Day.
Fobok Oct 6th 2008 7:52PM
I have two pieces of S2 gear, and one I only got because I expected there to be an honour wipe. Really, I know it'll be replaced anyway, at the very least as soon as I can get someone to craft me the blue PVP craftable gear. So, nothing really to worry about.
Though, with the concern of the lack of intellect on early Hunter gear in the expansion, I might just try for a third piece to just keep myself in intellect.
Starien Oct 7th 2008 9:35AM
On a PvP server? Absolutely. Resilience cap means everything in the world to someone who's sludging through Northrend for the first time, battling it out with the opposite faction for quest mobs.
I can't wait, personally, neither can my 4/5 Brutal gear.(blah blah 1700 scrub, I know.)
Gankers will still exist during the 70-80 grind, and there's nothing quite like someone trying to jump you and you handing them their head on a platter instead.

Well great news is Resiliance is redundant in PvE as of wrath :D
Tinwhisker Oct 6th 2008 8:02PM
PvE gear will last quite a bit longer than PvP gear of similar ilevel when leveling.
Certainly you can get a bit of a boost when it comes to crit and stamina from the PvP gear and that will help some with leveling but PvP gear is poorly itemized for leveling and when you do reach 80 the level 70 PvP gear will be useless for PvP.
If Blizz was still resetting honor with WotLK I'd say spend away but for now I'd just plan to level with whatever PvE gear you have and save the honor for later.

Gold. Farm gold, lots of it.
