Blizz posts DK creation FAQ
38 days from now, Wrath of the Lich King will be released, and hundreds of thousands of people will be chomping at the bit to roll Death Knights, WoW's first new class. Blizzard knows this as well as anyone, so they've posted a FAQ on DK character creation. If you've been following the news for months, there is little new here, but it's good as a recap, because these questions are, indeed, very frequently asked. So go on and brush up if you have questions about what races can be DKs (all of them), or whether you can make it the opposite faction of your existing characters (yes, unless you're on a PvP server).
There is, though, one bit of news in this post. When Wrath launches, you will only be able to create a DK on a realm on which you have an existing character of level 55 or higher. Wryxian, that maverick crocolisk CM, promises that in the future, the option will be opened up to create a DK on any realm, provided you have at least one 55-or-higher character somewhere. The previous plan was to make this the rule at launch (55+ = DK on any realm).
The only reason I can think of that they would make this change is that they were having difficulties from a technical standpoint; maybe it's non-trivial when trying to create a character on one realm to check that account's characters on other realms. Anyway, I doubt this will affect anyone too much. I for one am certainly going to make a DK on my main realm before I branch out to realms that I don't have any high-level characters on.

Well, I dont know about the rest of you, but the 'DK only on the same realm as your 55+' affects me quite a bit. I was looking to the DK as a great new solution for playing with friends on a different realm without having to throw down the long haul, or without dropping $25 on a character transfer.
"I'm On Uther" "O Snap, I'm on Shadowsong" "No Biggie. I'll Roll a Deathknight. I'll be in outland by dinner time"
Oh well. :)

This also affects me. I was trying to get a friend to start playing on my server when the expansion hits. He was all gung ho to start a deathknight to join my already level 70 character. Now he can't.

I agree. Wanted to start a horde DK and my 55+ characters are Alliance

Same deal here. I was planning on using the DK to play with friends on other servers.
Fobok Oct 6th 2008 4:19PM
Yep, I was planning the same sort of thing. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to open up.

Me too.
le sigh

My guess is they changed the realm requirement to control population at launch. This keeps some servers from being overrun by people who want to transfer there but don't want to pay the transfer fee.

Yeah that just cemented my not returning upon Wrath. I was thinking about coming back to play with a friend, but, guess not.

Ah com'on folks...
the Death Knighs is not ment as a "free-ride,- recruit-a-friend,-flood-other-servers,-cus-I-dont wanna-level-up-on-my-friends-realm"- Offer... - it's the new class of Magical Tanking, and melee DPS.
IF it's such a problem, not playing with your friends - use the next 5 weeks before WotLK to get that damn Alt to lvl 55 and stop believing, that everything in this world should be handed to you, and that you should be able to do all things at the same time, and have all options served on a silver platter...
why should the DK be a ticket for you to go to another server, if all your friends, or half of them, or just one of them, play on another server - ffs you have survived without the need to go to their server until now, what should make the DK your ticket? but buuhuuu mr. Tallens it would be so nice - yeah?`- so would Sheep on my priest, or a REAL shield on my priest as well be... but you cant get everything - it's no unreasonable that the DK cant be played on another server where you have no lvl 55 alts.
... if you miss them so much - by all means join them, dont stick around on your own server, if it's not making you happy - you cant do it all. Be Real about it - even though it's a fantasy game where dreams come true, it's not a frigging kittielitter for stupid ideas.

Another possible reason for this, if you could roll an instant DK anywhere, say Blizzard opens up new servers, BLAM! The instant influx of DK's all rushing to be first at whatever and to farm for alts.
Malefus Oct 6th 2008 4:16PM
They could turn DK creation off for new servers.
Caustik Oct 6th 2008 4:18PM
Dunno about all realms (US/EU), but on EU french speaking side, there are still lots of empty servers, we don"t really need any new one.
Corazu Oct 7th 2008 10:23AM
This was what I was thinking...it's possible they haven't figured out how to deal with this situation..(how hard could it be to just turn it off though until you have a l55 on that server).
darian Oct 6th 2008 4:14PM
The other possibility is that Blizzard didn't want new servers to be flooded with DKs. While the opening of new servers has slowed significantly, I'm sure Blizzard is anticipating the need to open a number of new ones from the inevitable increase in subscriptions that comes with an expansion/the Christmas season.

WTB pre-made 55 lvl caracter of any class when you have one caracter at lvl cap
^^
Patrick Smallwood Oct 6th 2008 4:19PM
If you have 10 characters on a server (one which is a 55+ to meet the requirements), do you get an 11th slot to make the DK, or do you have to get rid of one to make room?
Caustik Oct 6th 2008 4:20PM
No new slot.
And DK are using the same "type" of slot.
Maybe for the following x-pac
jorelius Oct 6th 2008 4:30PM
Yeah, I was hoping that it would be an account wide thing rather than a server wide thing too. All of my RL friend who play re-rolled horde while I was on a WoW haitus. DK would have helped speed the leveling along quite nicely.
vlad Oct 6th 2008 4:22PM
would have been nice so i could play with my friends from my old server faster. no biggie though. lots of raids to conquer with the main

Death Knight's really had my interest when they announced them, but I doubt I'll be rolling one any time soon just based ont he fact that they are the only new class out, and everybody and their brother sounds like they are going to have them. I really wish they would introduce at least two classes at the same time. Though I guess the fact that they start off with base profession stats and etc, will sway some people from rolling one.
