I am of the opinion that this game is, and always will be, easy as hell. This is all assuming several things:
1.) You have the time to invest in the game. I came into the game late, and by the time I was "bitten" by the raider bug, BC was coming to a close.
2.) You decide to not play with your close friends, but a group of min-maxers. I enjoy playing WOW with my friends, but at the cost of progression. When I pugged on my healer or tank with a more experienced guild, the recurring comment I got was "Holy shit! Your good! Why are you still in Kara?" My response was, and always will be b/c I choose to be with my friends and not experience the new content.
3.) I think this is the most important thing of why some people dont get very far and need the game "dumbed down" - they make bad decisions. I spent 5 months grinding BG honor and tokens for healing gear cause I thought I could use it to raid with, only to discover the flaw with BG gear in raids - no mana regen. That was 5 months of time wasted not raiding, not getting the real gear I needed to reach my goals. I made bad decisions, and as a result, the game got dumbed down, and it became easier for others to get to where I am at now.
Like I said earlier, this game is easy if you understand the basic concepts of your class (stacking spirit as a paladin = /facepalm), and you are aware of your surroundings. Dying to flame wreath b/c you were to stupid to see the raid warnings and the ring of fire surrounding you is stupid. Pulling agro cause you couldn't look up from your bars to notice that the mob did his agro wipe move on the tank is stupid.
