Breakfast Topic: How hybrid DPS could still get screwed in Wrath

However, it was my contention that, for the purpose of raiding, it doesn't ultimately matter how much these specs get buffed. They could do amazing DPS, bring incredible buffs, have any number of raid-saving abilities, and fart gold on every crit -- but you're still not going to see a lot of hybrid DPS running around Wrath raids for one very simple reason: someone has to tank and heal, and neither job is sufficiently attractive to allow most hybrid players to come as DPS. When it's a choice between respeccing resto or the raid never getting off the ground, most players will respec resto -- and decisions like that tend to be fairly hard to escape. The next night rolls around and -- um, do you mind coming as resto again?
It's a somewhat sobering thought that the raiding fate of players who love being retribution or shadow, no matter how good they are, ultimately rests on how attractive the tanking and healing jobs are to others. Some of this is within Blizzard's power to fix -- it's hard to appreciate the beauty of a dungeon or the encounter design when all you ever see of it are the boss' knees and health bars on your UI. The rest of it, however, is going to be up to the playerbase. Not everyone quits tanking or healing for reasons related to the game itself.
I'm going to enjoy Cat form's increased damage and tricks in Wrath, but I'm not optimistic that cats will find more use in raids than bears. The viability of hybrid DPS is not ultimately a function of the spec itself, but rather the need for tanks and healers in what seems to be a permanent DPS glut.

You realy nailed this one: everybody likes a hybrid, as long as they either Tank or Heal ... and generally, healers are mostly needed.
Too bad to think that my BloodElf paladin who'll go retribution in a week will have to respec Holy on hitting 80 :-(

Hybrid DPS will only get screwed if they allow it. If a guild leader asks you to respec to healz or tank *occasionally* that is one thing. But if your guild has a shortage of healers/tanks, and your GM refuses to recruit, then find a home somewhere else.
I look forward to bringing enhance shammies / fury warrs / boomkins etc to my instances and raids.

I bet you wish you were a Shaman cause they are the best.

One thing to consider when complaining about hybrids not getting a DPS slot is that nearly every class in WoW is a hybrid in some way. The only ones that aren't are the "pure DPS" classes. Every other class can either heal or tank.. none of them can DPS as well as a well-played pure damage class and rightly so.
If you want a class with more utility you should be willing to USE that utility, especially when it comes to raid content. If you just want to DPS, then pick a class that only does that job. That's just how this game is set up.
Respeccing is not a big deal anymore (even without the dual-spec changes whatever they are.. 50g is nothing and will be even less come lvl 80), so if you want to continue to pew pew in 5 mans and questing, go for it. But when it comes to your guild's first few undergeared attempts at a new raid you should be willing to use your chosen class to its fullest potential. Which is not DPS.

"...fart gold on every crit."
I think this may just put gold sellers even farther up our butts...

People who played mages and wanted to heal start a Shaman. Thats why there is so much QQing from the Shaman class. Once I played a Shaman to 17 but had to delete him because it felt too powerful. In the hands of a skilled player the Shaman is a deadly force.

@ Naix
thats why the top arena players all use a 3x Shaman setup

Shamans rule!
pudds Oct 8th 2008 2:05PM
Try going a little further Naix. Shaman are incredibly powerful...for the first 60 levels.
From 40-50, you risk going mad with power from enhancement's dominance, but at 60+, when players start gaining HP and resilience, the house of cards falls down. Burst damage is only good if your target dies before your burst is over...for 60 levels, they will be. For the remainder, they'll be alive and kicking, with many more survivability tricks than the Shaman.

Naix,
Will you get over it already? or maybe im just missing it. are you being sarcastic?
"Once I played a Shaman to 17 but had to delete him because it felt too powerful"
please tell me this is a joke? I've seen you post several comments about how "OP" shaman are. since you've only rolled one to lvl 17, I'm gonna go a head and say you have no clue what your taking about. please move along
Naix Oct 8th 2008 3:29PM
Mark my words Shamans are going to be nurfed in wrath to bring them back in line with other classes.
SBKT Oct 8th 2008 8:17AM
One problem is I hear there are some cut-downs in the Druid's healing powers. Even with that "OP heelz", not too many were allowed in raids as is in my server because that just sucks for PvE... supposedly.

REALLY?!?!?!?
I have people begging for my raid ID everyweek on my druid. It's not a matter of my skill because I think I'm only average.
It's that druids are, imo, the single most effecient healers in the game. We stack spirit for sick mana regen, and our heals rarely result in wasted mana in the form of overheals. I know this is the nature of a HoT, and some of that will change in Lich since we will be able to use all resto spells for "oh shit" moments, but a druids role is really unchanged from what I can see. We just have a few things to save our butts in an emergency.
There is no better healing team than a pally/druid for 10 mans, and even with the nerf to LB, I only seeing that duo getting better in Lich. Even with potion sickness, a druid is going to pop a pot first. In a really long fight, they will use their innervate and with our own flash heals now we can assist the paladin when he drops healing during his divine plea.
Manatank Oct 8th 2008 11:42AM
The druid healer in my guild is consistently our top performer in any content.
Jane Gray Oct 8th 2008 1:10PM
Manatank, if you're in tier 6 or sunwell, shoot your priests and shaman.
Marc Oct 8th 2008 8:18AM
If the guild has enough dedicated tanks and healers this won't be an issue.
However when you're running 5 mans they'll probably be guilted into tanking or healing by their guildmates.
Manatank Oct 8th 2008 12:10PM
I really don't understand this mentality. I feel like sometimes the pure DPS classes think those of us who can tank and heal are here to do the work while they have the fun. Personally I tank and heal because I enjoy the challenge, but I do get pretty annoyed when I hear "but I can ONLY dps."
Yeah, well I have lots of max level toons, how come all three of yours are all pure DPS classes? I've tanked and healed your main and your alts through so many things, when are you going to tank or heal my DPS alts? What, you don't think tanking is fun? Well perhaps you shouldn't expect others to do it for you then?
Basically, tanking and healing take skill, and dps takes not falling asleep.
Bugz Oct 8th 2008 2:10PM
Manatank, I absolutely understand what you are saying.
kenney Oct 8th 2008 3:37PM
Thank you manatank. I couldn't agree more. I actually DO think good dps takes skill- but the ratio of people who will heal/tank compared to the amount of dps and hybrid dps with a chip on their shoulder about doing anything other than pewpew is way off.
I don't like playing with people that develop a sense of entitlement. Tanks sometimes think they "deserve" the best loot even when it isn't required for progression. Healers sometimes feel that they deserve some kind of weird medal for healing. Mainly though- I see a lot of dps characters that feel they entitled to the rest of their friends and guilds making sacrifices so that they have the most fun, all the time. If I could find 25 reliable raiders without that sense of entitlement, I'd be dancing and singing for days.
QwithnoU Oct 8th 2008 11:38PM
Here here, manatank! Couldn't have said it better myself. The people that have complained the most about the tank shortage in BC are invariably people who refuse to roll tanking classes.
