Ask a Beta Tester: The Alchemist

Horizons asks...
Do the alchemy specializations in wrath still work the same way as they do now in BC? For example, will I still have a chance of getting 5 wrath potions even when I'm leveling starting at 375 such as Wrath Elixirs or Icy mana potions? And will transmute spec ever be fixed?
Yup, alchemy specializations work the exact same way in Wrath. As a potions master, I've already procced a few, but don't expect to see the Runic Mana or Runic Healing potion recipes until...I want to say it's 410 Alchemy. You'll skill up on the array of new elixirs like Elixir of Mighty Thoughts and Elixir of Mighty Agility until then, but do save mats for the new Alchemy trinkets that become available at (I think) 400, like Mighty Alchemist's Stone. We'll have more information soon on materials you'll start getting in Northrend that you'll want to set aside for crafting.
And on a related Alchemy note, Rhozul asks...
Now the real question - do I want to push my Priest, who is in greens, to Northrend after my Paladin to level Alchemy?
I would say it's going to depend on your supply of Northrend herbs -- and, in one case, a Northrend fish (Pygmy Suckerfish for Pygmy Oil). You'll be able to get a few skill-ups using Outland materials and recipes from what I remember, but it won't take you too far. If your Paladin is a raider or needs a steady supply of Titanium (or other) transmutes, however, it'll be well worth your time. The new Alchemy trinkets are BoP, but Northrend Alchemy Research is a lot of fun.
Sorano asks...
Can you apply Vigilance, the buff gained from the 31 point protection warrior talent tree, on the same warrior who cast it?
Vigilance is the new 31-point talent in the Warrior's Protection tree, and it's a very interesting little trick that transfers 10% of the threat produced by its target to you (in addition to reducing the damage they take by 3%). At the moment, the vast majority of tanking Warriors I'm seeingin 5-mans are actually using it on their healers to help with threat on boss fights with adds, but I think it'll find more efficient use on a high-threat DPS class or spec. As Kaeb suggests in the comment thread, Vigilance might be best applied to a Rogue using Tricks of the Trade or a Hunter using Misdirection on cooldown. Other suggestions include a Warrior off-tank casting Vigilance on the main-tank for an encounter.
Woca asks...
Once I ding 71, will my crit rating plummet?
From what I can recall of the difference between my feral Druid on the beta and live realms, I lost...I want to say somewhere in the region of 7% crit at 70. You'll certainly notice the difference, but it's unlikely to affect how quickly or effectively you level.
Frostymage asks...
I saw the Wrath gate video and was wondering if there are any other quests that have a cinematic or involve having something big happening in the world?
Well, yes and no. At the end of Drak'Tharon Keep, if someone in the group has a particular quest from Grizzly Hills, you'll be face to face with the Lich King as he gains another willing servant. There's also a great sort-of-cutscene that takes place at the end of the Death Knight introductory quest series, The Light of Dawn. So far I haven't seen anything else on the size or scale of the Angrathar Gate cinematic, but I'm not at 80 yet, and for all we know Blizzard is still programming things behind the scenes. I also have the nagging feeling that there's something I'm forgetting here.
Sjb asks...
Do Blacksmiths seem to be making a name for themselves with their new ability to socket items? Any idea how the BS armor and weapons scale with dungeon gear?
Eternal Belt Buckles are selling very well in the beta right now but I'm not yet sure how the armor and weapons stack up compared to dungeon gear. I can tell you that it is very rare indeed for me to see a "Made By" tag on anybody at the moment, although with so many people still leveling I guess that's to be expected.
Roma.mink asks...
Since we're on the subject of WotLK dailies...what level do you have to be to start doing them?? Do I have to wait until I'm level 80? :(
Nope, there are a few dailies here and there that you'll find while you're leveling, particularly for the Kalu'ak (Tuskarr). All three of their villages are easily reached via their boat system, so once you finish a daily in one village, hop the boat to hit the next one.

The new alchemist stones are BoP
Robert M Oct 9th 2008 5:28PM
Weren't they always?
actodd Oct 9th 2008 4:37PM
Are there more discoveries for Alchemists in Northrend? If so, what are they/have you had?
Khanmora Oct 9th 2008 5:08PM
If you mouseover the Northrend Alchemy Research link above, those are the new type of discovery system.
You can see some of the discovered recipes on Wowhead in the comments here:

"Can you apply Vigilance, the buff gained from the 31 point protection warrior talent tree, on the same warrior who cast it?"
You didn't answer the question, but I'm going to guess it's "No".
Allison Robert Oct 9th 2008 4:51PM
Ah, sorry about that - that omission looks like it was a copy/paste error on my part. But you're right, you can't cast Vigilance on yourself.
Kyudo Oct 9th 2008 5:05PM
Too bad you still can only drink one potion per battle. :(
Guess I'm switching to Inscription instead...

My alchemy skill is at 375 (on live) but I never bothered to pick up a specialty? Does it make sense to do it now, or should I wait until the xpac?
zappo Oct 10th 2008 10:34AM
I'm in the same boat, and I'd say START the quests now. Main reason is that you need to run instances to finish the quests, and getting a group together for Black Morass won't be so easy once the expansion hits. After that you can get the rest of the components together at your leisure.
Raelz Oct 9th 2008 5:36PM
Has there been any mention of an Engineering Research? I'm a huge fan of engineering and being able to discover research-only schematics, like 'inventions', would really add some fun and uniqueness to the profession.

I asked this on the last Beta test but appreciate it was earlier today as it was a question I just thought of and figured I wouldn't catch you in time for this release (or you'd miss the Q with it being on an old post). With that said (and again, an apology for the repeat):
With regards to BM hunters. If we tame exotic pets and then decide to respec later (either with a complete respec to, say, Marks, or just a BM tinkering), will we lose our tamed exotic pets? If we did that would become very costly time-wise if you wanted to respec prior to a raid etc. Perhaps the upcoming duel-spec will help this but any light on how it stands now?
Thanks
sweetness Oct 9th 2008 5:46PM
I'm pretty sure I read it somewhere that you will lose those pets. Either BRK or on the forums. It wouldnt make sense for that to be possible because then you might as well let everyone have an exotic pet.
It would be interesting to see how this is handled with dual spec. But thats probably a little further out anyway.
Wii Willi Oct 9th 2008 5:56PM
Yeah, I agree, it would make total sense (and only be fair) for you to lose the pet, but it could prove very painful if you wanted to juggle or respec upon hitting 80 or going into a raid/arena yadda yadda.. I almost wish that respeccing had a gold charge per refunded Talent Point so that you could, for example, right click talents to unlearn them as opposed to unlearning everything and essentially resetting (and in this case losing your pets).
Bbut yep, going to be interesting to see how this is handled. I know I will have to just spend carefully before initial taming. Hopefully the great Hunter minds such as BRK (and those that are of the same standing for other classes) will be providing some clear "sensible" talent point spending advice before next Tuesday. Aside from everything else, it would be a good chance to stimulate the class communities on how they view points should be spent effectively.
I'm rambling. /hush
Schadenfreude Oct 9th 2008 7:02PM
You don't lose the pet. The pet is dismissed, and you have to go to the stables and pull out a non-exotic pet.
Medguif Oct 9th 2008 5:42PM
Does Infected wounds work on bosses? only in some of them? in most? ... i have not seen any feedback about this talent.
Grayclaw Oct 9th 2008 5:51PM
My guild is currently looking towards raiding in Wrath. As the healing lead, I've been following the discussions in the beta forums on the worries the healers have with the new mechanics--primarily healing effiency and mana management (I never thought I'd see the day that healing rotations were needed again!) I'm curious then if the new raids (10 and 25) are going to be using roughly the same comp as BC (2-3-5 and 3-7-15). With such heavy emphasis placed on mana management now, are the raids being designed for fewer dps? Or, given that it is likely fewer players will want to heal, are the raids going to be able to manage with fewer heals? Just curious if you've noticed any changes in this area.

Two questions about the same achievment:
a) Do non-epic mounts count towards the 50 for Leading the Calvary?
b) If you have 50 mounts at 70, will you still get the Drake?
Thanky.
Raaj Oct 9th 2008 6:29PM
Yes and yes.
Lemons Oct 9th 2008 5:58PM
Once wotlk is released WoW Insider should do epic cinematic roundup where they tell which quests have a cinematic at the end. I for one am going to be powerleveling to 80 so I'm not behind when arenas start so I'd like to know which quests to really pay attention to.
sweetness Oct 9th 2008 6:11PM
I have a question:
What is going to be the fastest way to level once Wrath hits? I hear alot of people are forming instance leveling groups because they hear this is going to be the fastest way to level if you are quick.
If that is the case, then would it be more efficient to, lets say, 3 man a normal Outland 70 dungeon (i.e. slabs/shattered) or run 5 mans in a Nothrend 73 dungeon?
Also, along those lines, will you be getting experience for raids? Like if my guild decides to go do a Sunwell raid when we hit 74-75 will we get experience for that?
That would be fun to see, "Kil'Jaeden has died. You receive 85 exp"
