Sewer fishing for fun and profit (mostly fun)

You'll find an array of new fish and pools in Wrath, but for my money the two great joys are fishing in the Dalaran sewers and the Dalaran wishing fountain. The fountain is actually the more interesting of the two for a reason we'll cover in a bit, but you'll also need the sewers if you're interested in a new noncombat pet and the Accomplished Angler achievement (the one rewarding the "Salty" title, which I'm sure no one in the game ever intends to abuse).
Spoiler warning: if you don't want to know the disgusting but highly interesting things you'll coax out of the Dalaran sewer system, just keep scrollin'.
In 115 catches down in the sewers (I spend most of my time at the fountain, I confess), I came up with the following:
- 64 Sewer Carp -- This cooks up into a basic health-restoring food, nothing too special. You're not down here for this stuff.
- 35 Magic Eaters -- Now this is where things get amusing. Spending at least 10 seconds eating this will...leave you a changed person. More accurately, it will change you from a person into a dragon whelp, a basilisk, a wasp, or a wisp, or it will give you a random food buff like +60 attack power or 12 mp5 in addition to +30 stamina. El's Extreme Anglin', which is still by far the best resource on WoW fishing, has the exact numbers here. Think of it as a fun little thing to experiment with when you're bored with Savory Deviate Delight
- 6 Partially Eaten Fish -- You'll see a lot of rats running around the sewers. This is off the carte du jour.
- 3 Drowned Rats -- What happens when the rats swim too soon after eating said fish, I can only assume.
- 2 Leaded Vials -- You'll occasionally get lower-level alchemy vials like this and:
- 5 Empty Vials -- Give 'em to an alchemist friend or just vendor them.
The good news? The rat should be (on average) easier, or at least more straightforward, to get than the crawdad pet, which was only a 20% drop on what was already a 1 in 500 chance. The bad news? You're still going to spend a lot of time looking for it anyway. The consoling news? You'll need 1,000 catches under your belt to get the 1,000 Fish achievement, which you also need for Accomplished Angler.
And they do mean fish; I tested this and found that no amount of fishing up boxes, coins, etc. counted toward the achievement. So if you're hanging around Dalaran in Wrath in much the same way you hang around in Shattrath now, and you want to put some work in toward the achievement, head for the sewers rather than the fountain if you don't yet have the pet. After you finally get the rat (no hard numbers on the drop rate as yet; El's Extreme Anglin' theorizes it's less than a 1% drop), it's probably a more effective use of your time to hit the fountain for work on the fishing achievements you'll need there (you can also get fish from the fountain, just not as commonly as in the sewers). Between those and the fish you'll probably be getting outside of Dalaran for cooking, getting 1,000 actually isn't as tough as it sounds; I'm at 332 catches right now in the beta without really even trying. More to come soon on the Dalaran fountain.

I like fishing while waiting for a raid to start, its productive and I can cook up treats for the raid to eat!
Khanmora Oct 9th 2008 5:14PM
Same thing for me, that and pvp queues are when I get the most fishing done.

Or.... Fourth maybe? We're sorry, you don't get a medal, and we won't sing your national anthem. Unless of course you're from the same country as Mattimaticus.
Good luck next time

I can't hop on to the beta right now to check, but according to wowhead catching a Giant sewer rat is not required to get the title "salty".

BaboonNL your peer pressure has ruined my reputation.

Is there a fishing daily in Northrend? I leveled my fishing from 300 to 375 doing the daily in Outland. Picked up a couple "The 2 Ring"s as well. Would be nice to level from 375 to 450 doing dailies.

I think fishing on my main is at 53.
Silly fishing.

I just wish they would remove Master Angler of Stranglethorn from the Accomplished Angler achievement. I have spent over a year trying to do this on my server, which considering my time zone means getting up before the sun rises.
I have gone as far as getting a warlock and two friends ready to summon me when done, and all of the other tricks; I have not won yet. Basically this make the achievement impossible for people who casually fish.
Shadowaninja Oct 9th 2008 6:04PM
It's more than possible to do it as a "casual" fisher. There's just a bit of luck and strategy involved. Make a trip over to El's, she has a guide for it.
Balius Oct 9th 2008 7:11PM
At best, you're competing with everyone on your server on even grounds, with only one winner per week. If only 53 people are trying and they stop when they win once, that still means that SOMEONE can't win after a year of trying.
That's hardly "more than possible" for a casual, given the fact that there were people lining the shoreline in the hundreds every time I've gone to the event on my server. Between the odd timeframe and the amount of friends you need in case you happen to get lucky, it's not an event for a casual player to win without being extremely fortunate.
I'm not saying that it's good or bad that the achievement's so rare (with only 52 possible winners a year, and not all those even getting the title, and those that DO get the title possibly not displaying it) I imagine that seeing a "Salty" Character will be a pretty rare event.

I won the tourney twice my first two tries. Some tricks I learned from others before I attempted it: Be prepared 15 minutes before the start of the tourney with your gear equipped, your hearthstone SET TO THE INN in Booty Bay, a Swiftness Potion in your pack. Head north, then as soon as the pools spawn, start fishing on the NORTH end of the west coast and move south. Don't share pools, move on. If you're reasonably high level, you don't need to clear the mobs around you. If you 35+, don't worry about mobs, just bring water walking elixirs and use them to fish from the water and take shortcuts across instead of riding/mounting. Don't stand on the shore. Re-cast your line immediately if it doesn't land IN the pool and readjust your position. The second you catch your last fish, HEARTH, drink your swiftness pot, and run to turn in your quest. Decide which reward you want before you get there, because if someone else comes, they can beat you if they choose first.

Why are all the Kirin Tor too cool for robes nowadays? They all look dumb. If you're a mage wear a freaking robe, aight?

I also like fishing a lot. Even though I have some serious issues with Old Man Barlo.
I've gotten 5 wedding rings from the man. 5. and Still NO Fishing Hat. I've done that daily sooooo many times, most days it's the only one I ever do, I've gotten multiple eyes of the sea, couple nobles' monocles (no "2" ring yet, but i'll probably see that before i see a damn hat).
My only consolation is that he was kind enough one day to give me a crocolisk. For that, he saves himself from my unending wrath. Not that I can do much to a friendly NPC, but i was getting ready to go find someone with a private server just so i could kill him. Well, not really. But his random number generator sure is crappy for me.
Super Guest Man 9000 Oct 10th 2008 4:38AM
The RNG is a cruel mistress. I've gotten several Eyes of the Sea, Two fishing hats, and two of the croc pets. Hate me!

I haaaaated leveling fishing, in the beginning. Every time I would start grinding skill-ups I would ask myself (and ask Gchat) "Why am I doing this? I must be a glutton for punishment."
But now, fishing is one of my favorite WoW activities.
What changed? I hit skill 300, and started doing the fishing daily to gain skill-ups, instead of grinding in IF. Now, I gain 2 skill points a day doing the daily, and it only takes me about 5 minutes. At this rate, I'll hit 375 just as Wrath drops. Only fishing for the daily made the skill into a nice bit of WoW flavor, and made it into something rewarding, instead of something boring.

I'll have to level fishing on my alt SHUT UP
Hitm4n Oct 9th 2008 7:53PM
I had fishing maxed out on my mage long before they made it alot easier (eg guaranteed that you would catch and fish and reduced the timer etc etc). I'm sure I've already caught well over 1000 fish - will that mean that part will be done for me already or is it 1000 wotlk fish?
