Mounts to be usable in water

During the Q&A Panel at BlizzCon, Blizzard surprised the audience by responding obtusely to the question of when mounts will be usable in dungeons. One of the most annoying things in the game is probably those times when you're trying to cross a stream or something, only to get dismounted and have to summon your mount again after you cross. Well, Ghostcrawler Tigole -- in a BlizzCon exclusive -- says that will soon be a thing of the past. All ground mounts will be usable in water in the first patch following Wrath of the Lich King. It took us a bit to confirm this because, well, it sounded like a joke. You all know how Blizzard loves to kid around.
This probably means you'll be able to submerge with your mount. In one of the older patches in The Burning Crusade, flying mounts were adjusted so that you are no longer dismounted when coming into contact with water. That also made it impossible to dive into the water without manually dismounting from your flying mount. A different behavior will probably happen for ground mounts. Thanks to the change, we can happily cross this off the list of annoying things in the game.

Can't wait to see the underwater mount animation.
badjoke Oct 12th 2008 12:04AM
There's already a swimming animation for mounts. When you first wade into some water, the mount swims for a split-second and desummons. I don't know why this wasn't implemented all along.

This is true. I was able to play around with the mount animation when the Island of Quel'Danas first came about and everything was still buggy.
I had a nice bit of lag and everything stopped, but I was on my skeletal warhorse and I plunged right into the water. The animation is just as you'd imagine a horse (dead or otherwise) to attempt to swim.

@Arkkoran
We don't know the pricing structure of SC2 yet. I wouldn't expect Blizzard to make us pay $150. Hold out a little hope; had Blizz fucked you before?

I'll actually be disappointed if they allow the mounts to dive.. I was hoping for special underwater mounts, like a gnomish submarine or an orca of my very own.

thought it was Jeff Kaplan who said it? but any way this feature will be really cool can't wait for that patch.
Rexigar Oct 12th 2008 12:08AM
This is really good, its such a pain when you cross a river and get dismounted.

I believe the question was about using them indoors (the example he gave was harpy caves) not necessarily dungeons since instances already allow you to mount.
It's a really great change though. The question of The Hog is interesting. Can't wait to ride my Hog on ice with my DK!

Not to be trollish, but this seems about the only interesting thing announced at Blizzcon so far. I mean, its not exactly been full of bombshells has it? I was kinda hoping they'd been holding something exciting back to shock us all....
Arkkoran Oct 12th 2008 1:15AM
Oh, no. I've been thinking the same thing. The only other thing I've seen announced that matters is that we're going to be paying three times as much for Starcraft II (check other sites, SCII is going to be a trilogy, one full game for each race), but that isn't WoW related so I'll go complain about that elsewhere. :D

ITA with this one. I was hoping for something new and amazing that would over whelm us! Instead it feels like I am at looking at Power Point Projects for Execs from the Developers. Yawn...

Umm wouldn't the Engineering chopper and the the Mechanostrider short circuit? o_O
Zakk Oct 12th 2008 3:29AM
We're hoping mechanical mounts transform into submarines when they hit the water.

a whole post for this? been up on mmo-champion all day.
anyway this is lame. i like my "get away" skills i have developed of being able to jump rivers a special way that i dont get knocked off. nows its not as relevant if the people chasing me dont get foiled by my plan.
Sothe Oct 12th 2008 1:48AM
Fall down a well and die.
Zach Oct 12th 2008 3:37AM
It's been up here all day, too. In the Q&A panel liveblog. It needed it's own post because it was the most significant thing to come out from that panel.
Oh, and you're still an idiot and nobody still loves you.
nokturnus Oct 13th 2008 8:06AM
Vlad, your whole 'been up on mmo-champion for blah blah' is getting bit too old, you used to entertain me for some time with your delusions but you don't anymore. I miss the imagination in your trolling. Come on, try harder, I am sure that with a bit of an effort you can make it and become no.1 troll on WoWinsider again...
Claintow Oct 12th 2008 1:32AM
I dont really think they will let them swim underwater, just doggy paddle in water.
It removes the annoyance of dismounting, and its cool.
We are going to the the underwater special mounts for the Southern Seas Maelstrom expansion.
Balius Oct 12th 2008 2:02AM
I HOPE they aren't submersible...that would be rather ridiculous on most mounts. Not dismounting as you cross a small stream, that's super. Riding a ram to the depths of the ocean, on the other hand...yeah.
About the only mount I can really picture looking good underwater is the Nether Ray, and that's a flying mount so it wouldn't qualify anyway.

I can't wait to see my elekk drown =)
