Lake Wintergrasp: Balance, badges, bosses, and bling

The good news is that there's a lot of work being done on the zone and the siege vehicles and buildings do a nice job of blowing up. I also appreciate the return of my favorite guys from Alterac Valley, like my Pusoy Dos buddy Lieutenant Murp. In general, though, Lake Wintergrasp needs a lot of breadcrumb quests and hand-holding just for people to get the basics. Blizzard has big plans for the zone, and they detailed a lot of those in yesterday's PvP panel.
The zone is massive. In the Beta, there were areas that felt somewhat abandoned and felt empty. This is certain to happen in live realms, as there are off-hours of play. But Blizzard's aim is clear: they want this place to be all combat all the time, with hundreds of players bombing, killing, attacking and defending. In fact, they prepared their servers to handle such a load. If this happens -- and by the Light, I hope it will -- and hundreds of players do fill the zone for unadulterated combat, I'm going to have one hell of a good time.
Balance
The question, though, is what if there is a massive population imbalance in the realm? In some cases, the ratio has been as bad as 14:1, although a quick perusal of Warcraft Realms statistics list Azgalor's 6.7 Horde for every one Alliance as the worst population imbalance at the moment. Blizzard created a buff called Tenacity, which is granted to players who are outnumbered in the zone. It's a scaling buff that makes players stronger the more they are outnumbered, so in some cases a single player can easily take on four other players of equal skill. Sometimes, the promise of that kind of heroics is enough to get players to try out this non-instanced Battleground. Control of Wintergrasp keep also grants a portal to and from Dalaran, which should be another great incentive.
Badges
The timer for the zone is a short 2.5 hours, with an estimated capture time of about 30 to 45 minutes. Capturing the zone grants the Essence of Wintergrasp, a buff similar to the one in Auchindoun, which allows the capture of Stone Keeper's Shards. These shards act as currency for "a wide variety" of items in the game, from gear to gems to mounts. The key to keeping Lake Wintergrasp is in the gear, similar to how Badge of Justice loot kept on getting upgrades. Aside from the drops, this mechanic kept Heroic instances relevant. Spirit Shards in The Burning Crusade, for example, becomes irrelevant once you get past a certain level because the rewards were limited and underwhelming. The Bone Wastes only became relevant again with the associated daily quest.
Bosses
Capturing Lake Wintergrasp also opens up a the Vault of Archavon, a single-boss raid instance, for the controlling faction. This is one of the most interesting twists of the zone, and I'm not so sure how I feel about it. Lately, I've been dedicated to PvP almost exclusively, and this requires a raid group of either 10 or 25 players, which would force me to raid. No, really. It's extremely compelling -- Archavon the Stone Watcher drops either Hateful or Deadly Gladiator pieces in 10- and 25-player modes respectively. Normally, those items require Arena ratings as well as Honor and / or Arena points, but Archavon drops them for free. If that isn't the most brilliant come-on to draw hardcore PvP players to raid, I don't know what is.
Bling
Blizzard also outlined their plans to provide extensive rewards available through Wintergrasp, which I mentioned will be an important part of keeping the zone relevant and fresh. The vehicles aren't exactly rewards, but considering participation in Lake Wintergrasp increases a person's "rank" enough to use the siege weapons, it's another incentive to actually play. These ranks reset for every battle, so it's really just a quantitative system to gauge what siege weaponry you can use. On the other hand, there are actual vehicles, or mounts, that you can buy with Wintergrasp shards. Right now it's the Black War Mammoth, but it's not unreasonable to think there could be more in the future.
There are currently metagems and metagem patterns, shoulder enchants, and one of the coolest items ever -- Wintergrasp Commendation. It's a token that can be spent for 2,000 Honor points. The best thing about it is that it binds to account... so it can be sent to your alts. Future gear from Wintergrasp reportedly includes heirloom items, PvP gear, and other cool stuff. A prestigious PvP vanity pet, maybe? Anything goes, really, as the door is wide open for Blizzard to go all out on this.
With so much resting on the zone -- it's Blizzard's first attempt at a non-instanced Battleground and completely PvP-centric zone with PvP-centric quests -- it simply can't fail. To have a broken Battleground is one thing, but to have a zone that nobody is interested in would be a major disaster. I believe I once said I wanted to spend all my time in Wintergrasp once it goes live. If that's what it takes to make this thing work, I'm ready to stake my claim on a good swath of that cold, hard ice.

I really hope this works out. Despite my earlier reluctance, this seems like a top-notch idea that could really let world PVP bloom.
If it works, who knows, maybe they could roll this out across all contested zones?

sounds insainly fun :D

Wintergrasp will succeed if the population goes there. Like the author said, I'll be staking out within this zone a lot to help it get off the ground.

I played Wintergrasp quite a bit in the beta. It IS everything it's hyped up to be, but Blizzard KILLED it with the 2.5 hour timer. there was a period of :30 timers, and it was great, a constant persistent World PVP. Once they switched the timer I barely got any chance to play it.
I mean, for people who work, you come home and can MAYBE get in one battle. Maybe, if your timing is right.
World PVP: one step forward, two steps back.

I agree completely. 2 and a half hours is too long. ONE hour is too long.
That said, the article is correct, I've seen Horde attempt to attack the gates while we bombarded them with cannons or just stand there while I pelted them with Starfires from one of the overlooks on the vehicles.
More importantly, I don't think most people understand what's going on when they enter the zone for the first time, since most people who end up in there end up in there like I do, by accidentally flying over Wintergrasp on the way to somewhere else.

The 2.5h timer is there so people can access the content offered for winning side. Dailies, Raid instance, Vendors etc.

good read, I agree completely about the "wtf do I do now?" feeling first time you go there, it is a bit overwhelming and I couldnt find any good basic set of directions from the NPC's presented to me

@ Woca How about you just go play WAR then? It'll save you the efforts of whining about WoW , and save us from having to hear about it. If it's that much better, it's for you.
The same crap happened with AoC came out. Everyone was so gassed about how much better it was than WoW that all they could apparently, was hang around WoW and compare the two.

Only problem for almost all live serves will be the alliance:horde ratio as for Wintergrasp to be at its best it needs to be about 50:50

I have spent several hours in this zone with every different beta build and it has HUGE key flaws.
If one side outnumbers the other side its a hopeless fight that will end with one faction being farmed at there graveyard. Yeah you can sit on the GY and be immune but when its surrounded you cannot get off it without dying because there is no flying mounts. This is not fun!
In even up battle the defenders have such an amazingly huge advantage. I have gone entire games watching the seige engines get destroyed on there way to the door without ever doing a point of damage to it.
I also love being rezzed at a GY you don't control and having a 3-5 minute run to your corpse to get back into the fight. Why can't we rez at a GY we control so we can mount up and get right back to the fight.
Plus the fact that the battles last for 30-40 minutes with a 2+hour downtime is just retarded. I understand the winners get access to the raid instance but if you win it then it takes you 2+ hours to get a raid together to go in there your a retard. If a guild wants to raid that instance then they should get there raid together, go to wintergrasp and try to win it. If you win you get to go in if you don't then to bad. Have a 30 minute reset for the next people to try. Then that same raid can sit there and defend. No big deal.....
As of right now I can agree that it is an extremely good idea but the way it is implemented it is just retarded.
My server has alliance outnumbering horde 4-1. I (as an alliance player) do not look forward to Lake wintergrasp at all right now.
woca Oct 12th 2008 2:51PM
i am very concerned with horde or alliance dominating this do to just shitty servers(in terms of alliance to horde ratio). My server is about 2.5 to 1 horde, on a good day so im pretty sure horde will be owning lake wintergrasp(horde could dominate leveling areas, but im hoping people are more interested in leveling). blizzard really needs to add incentives for people to roll on the lower populated sides. it took WAR 3 weeks to do this... I do not want to pay $25 dollars to switch servers and and i dont want to leave my guild. might be easier just to play with them in WAR unless bliz can pull their heads outta their asses
woca Oct 12th 2008 2:51PM
2.5 to 1, horde has more*
Zamboni Oct 13th 2008 2:11PM
It's 5:1 on my server in the Alliance's favor. I play Horde, so playing in Lake Wintergrasp will likely require a $25 server transfer first.
Elmo Oct 12th 2008 2:39PM
1- I'm afraid the Horde will have more hold of Wintergrasp than the Alliance so we can't kill that boss (although I have no idea how important he is in terms of progression)
2- Doesn't that mean you can't really plan a run to that instance and you basically have to hope enough people are online...
Elmo Oct 12th 2008 2:41PM
I need to read better, t'seems the boss is dropping PvP stuffs :p
Cyramn Oct 12th 2008 2:43PM
I played Wintergrasp quite a bit in the beta, and I didn't get the "what am I doing here?" feeling you guys are talking about. It took maybe one battle to get the feeling for how everything works with no explanation from NPCs or other people. I thought it was very intuitive and didn't need any work.
I do agree with the people before talking about the cooldown timer...that is way too long. The 30 minute timer was great. Constant battle, lots of fun, and enough time to do the VERY simple raid. I did the 25-man version of Archavon in a spec I am not used to and it was easy as hell, even when we had him bouncing off of our DPS Death Knights the whole time. Seems like it was made for PvPers who don't raid a whole lot.
Nijle Oct 13th 2008 9:12AM
Yea i got the same feeling when i first did AV, but i just followed people around and payed attention for one game and got the hang of it.
Jon Oct 12th 2008 2:44PM
That is freaking AMAZING! I can't wait for LK now, lol
matt Oct 12th 2008 2:45PM
I'm at the wait and see point with this I like battlegrounds but this seems a bit overwhelming at this point but I guess so was AV back in the day when you have all those quest and had to round up wolves, or collect elf ears...which isn't the case any more. In fact you round up a wolf now your likely to get marked afk.
Here is hoping this is something good but some how I get the feeling its going to be a epic fail on live realms after a few weeks.
Archex Oct 12th 2008 2:54PM
I think it will fail. I already plan to avoid this zone like the plague, since pvp holds zero interest for me, and there are a lot of folks like me. I am willing to wager I spend 0 minutes played in wintergrasp. I know this is just my opinion, but pvp is ruining what was once a great pve game. Balancing for pvp leads to lowest common denominator solutions, not fun and innovative ones.
