and for god's sake, don;t just go on google and search for "warcraft patch". I had a friend that did that a few patches ago.
...Guess who had to spend a few weeks getting his hacked account back?
lolwut Oct 13th 2008 2:13PM
Thanks babe.

don't you have the links for EU version of the patches?
Christoffer Oct 13th 2008 2:12PM
+1!

I'll see what I can do. There is a list of mirrors at WoW Wiki that includes EU versions, but I haven't virus checked them and can't vouch for their safety as I can these.

Wowinsider tends to forget Europe even exists. We patch on Wednesday, this article says Tuesday everywhere.

Why not use the Blizzard patch tool to download your patches? It uses torrent technology so the more people that are downloading the patch the faster it will be for everyone.
msingletary Oct 13th 2008 2:12PM
Have you ever used their downloader before? It's terribly slow. I have a 10Mbps cable connection that normally clocks at around 18Mbps+ and I can never get close to 300kbps down on their stupid downloader.
Before anyone gets smart, I've got the ports open and have even tried DMZing the machine. BitTorrent in general works without a problem, but their downloader is just way too slow.
Mirrors are awesome if you don't want to leave your computer on all day with the Blizzard Downloader for something you can grab in minutes on an HTTP mirror.

Because sometimes the background downloader / Blizzard patcher, using torrents, doesn't work correctly behind even a properly configured router or nat system. Sometimes people don't enjoy all 25mb of their upstream being utilized at once because there aren't any throttle settings in Blizzards tool.
Amaxe Oct 13th 2008 2:15PM
Actually, i find the speeds are better if you don't share.
Adam Holisky Oct 13th 2008 2:44PM
I'm a big fan of torrents. However, the Blizzard Background Downloader fails hard.
Why?
It could be a technical problem with the torrent system they've established. It could be that with so many millions of users trying to download one file, the torrent code can't handle it correctly (although it should be able to, at least theoretically). It could be that users really don't know how to operate the torrent downloader correctly, or that ISPs are blocking it in some way.
Either way, the only time I download something via torrent is when I have to get something up on WoW Insider right away after a patch. And since we have access to the PTR so far in advance these days, that really only happens with the beta. So most of the time the best thing to do is to download from a mirror - which is around 20x faster then the Blizzard Downloader.
Definitely an interesting technical problem.

I let my downloader work in the background while playing. I got the 1.1 gig patch in about 45 minutes even while playing. Your millage may vary.

Obviously, this man has hacked his router to use Inscription in order to speed his downloads!
Tyler Oct 13th 2008 4:37PM
@Amaxe each individual person gets the most benefit from every other person sharing but not them. I don't know if that actually applies to torrents but it does theoretically.
Andrew Welch Oct 14th 2008 3:37AM
With only a 5GB monthly download limit, I often have to consider the ramifications of downloading large file-size software and this gigantic patch is no exception. Thankfully, I found the patch in my ISP's 'freezone' where downloads are un-metered. If you are in a similar position you may wish to check your ISP for something similar.

Bit Torrent technology is blocked at my place of work.
where I shouldn't have WoW to begin with, but thats another problem.

And don't forget to use the Background Downloader.

Please bear in mind that you also have many european readers, and the above links will not work for them.

Vista users shouldn't be placing their patches into those folders.
Vista users should download the patches to the following folder(s):
C:\Users\Public\Documents\World of Warcraft\Updates\
or
C:\Users\Public\Documents\Blizzard Entertainment\World of Warcraft\Updates
The World of Warcraft folder will already be created from previous patches, so just find the correct path, and create 2 folders inside the Updates folder with the names
WoW-2.4.3-to-3.0.1-TBC-USMX-Update
and
WoW-3.0.1-to-3.0.2-Update
Save the 1st patch into the folder with the first name, and save the other 3 patch pieces into the 2nd folder.
