Mounts and Vanity Pets in Patch 3.0.2
One of the coolest changes in Patch 3.0.2 is the way mounts and vanity pets work. Done as a way to save bag space, this is great news for collectors and might even spur other players to start collecting, too. On live servers, pets and mounts summoned through the use of an item. When tomorrow's patch goes live, these pets and mounts will become consumable, single-charge items that teach you a spell to summon the relevant pet or mount. The pet or mount will then disappear from your inventory. Don't panic, those simply become spells that you will be able to access through your Character panel. There's a tab there labeled 'Pets', which will contain two sub-tabs called 'Companions' and 'Mounts'. Selected pets and mounts will be previewed in the window, and you can easily drag your pet and mount spells to your hotbars. Pets are instant cast spells that can be cast while moving and activate the GCD. You can create macros and key bindings for pets and mounts just as you would any other spell.

I actually started collecting pets relatively recently too and like you Charlie - I have ever vendored pet and some of the drops/quest pets: my two favs are the Sprite Dartling and the Crimson Whelp (1 in 1500 drop rate, took 6 hours to farm). But the Sprite is worth it! Very cute and very tiny :) So go on, go get it :)

@jane
The siamese cat can be bought off a vendor in Stormspire, so there's no need to farm VC :D

Does anyone know how the upgrade from "Flying Machine Control" to "Turbo-Charged Flying Machine Control" works under this scheme?
Currently, on live, the first is consumed as a material when creating the second. Am I to assume that you can continue to do this, (even though the FM will be in the spellbook rather than the inventory), or will you have to create another control?

In beta, the mount icon (icon? not sure what to call it) says to right click to learn to summon this mount. When you right click it, the mount is now 'castable' from your mount spellbook page. The icon however, remains in your bag and now says 'already known.' So for most of us, we can just destroy the icons after learning them and be about our business. For stuff like the gyrocopter, I'd imagine you would just hold onto the icon until you've assembled the mats for the epic speed version.

I deleted my miniwing ages ago for bag space, what are the chances I can get him back?
Charlie Taylor Oct 13th 2008 9:45AM
You'll have to wait for the expac, but there's a vendor in Dalaran that will help you recover deleted quest pets.

Neat, thanks Charlie :)

You're comments are quite valuable here. I don't know how many pets I deleted when I was struggling for bag space
Rissole Oct 13th 2008 1:33PM
On the PTR, any hunter Pet Trainer could recover deleted quest pets. I got my Miniwing back from the Pet Trainer in Ironforge.

Actually, stablemasters have an option to recover quested pets - I got my BRS worg and spider back that way from my stablemaster in Shatt.

Say you wanted to summon a random pet or mount...is there a macro for that I can use now? I have it with my mounts now, but that's more of a /use item type of thing.
Narlic Oct 13th 2008 10:33AM
So long as your macro does a /use or /cast with the mount's full name (not by bag slot), your macro should work unaltered.
I'm actually going to be having to rewrite my own mount macro, because it picked the flying/ground mounts to use by their bag slots, so I could just re-arrange them their rather than having to type out long names in the macro to change my mount preference for the day.
Amaxe Oct 13th 2008 10:40AM
It might have been a glitch, but my own macro for mounts did not work on the PTR (admittedly over a month ago):
#showtooltip
/cast [combat,nomounted][modifier][button:2] Ghost Wolf
/cast [nostance, nocombat, noflyable] Reins of the Cobalt War Talbuk
/cast [nostance,nocombat,flyable] Swift Red Gryphon
/dismount [mounted,noflying]
/cancelform [stance]

Get ready for trade chat to be filled with "where the hell did my mount go? its not in my bags anymore"
Rick Oct 13th 2008 11:54AM
Are riding crops still a trinket that you need to equip?
telith Oct 13th 2008 12:42PM
riding crop should become like an enchant you put on the mounts if I'm not mistaken. so it will no longer take a trinket slot.

I just hope for one thing, that they rework the companion/mount UI so we can organize our pets/mounts.
Right now on the beta it's one big mess, and i can't seem to drag one pet to a certain slot/page, having almost 6 pages of pets makes this kinda difficult to find a certain pet/mount fast
Maybe they could make the UI with couple filters, like Breanni uses on her website.

or

That'd be sweet :)

Oh, if only the Dalaran Vendor would see clear to getting me back the Image of Archmage Vargoth, which I deleted, ages ago, due to space constraints, but have been kicking myself for having done, ever since....
Good ol' Vargoth is as much a non-combat pet as anything else, IMO.
Sophii Oct 14th 2008 5:07AM
Does anyone know if the pets that you have already used once, and are BOE, will still be that way tomorrow when they're castable instead? I've got a disgusting oozling on one of my characters that is pretty much dead to me, and I want to give it to my mage instead :) I think I read somewhere that it worked like that on the beta. .
Grace Oct 14th 2008 12:27PM
Now if they would only do the same for hunter pets......
