3.0.2 for Feral Druids

The big change, philosophy-wise, is that we're going to be able to be main tanks or top-tier DPS, on par with the best warriors or rogues. The catch is that we won't be able to do it with the same spec; we can spec to be DPS or tank, and do as well as anyone at those rolls. We can still try to spec somewhere in the middle, but then we'll get back to our old "master of none" status. In my opinion, this is good news, especially considering we'll be getting dual-spec capabilities in 3.1 (the first post-Wrath content patch).
The way they enforce this new design strategy is by giving us a slightly higher number of talents in Resto that are practically mandatory, which leaves us fewer points to invest in Feral. They then put in more cat- and bear-specific talents than we previously had. The end result is that we can't get all the best bear talents, all the best cat talents, and all the near-mandatory Resto talents in one build; we wind up taking the Resto talents and picking one of cat or bear. This is even more pronounced at level 70.
The new and changed Bear talents will change the way we gear substantially.
- Survival of the Fittest has been doubled, rendering us uncrittable solely through talents. This means we no longer need (or benefit much from) Defense on our gear.
- Protector of the Pack, a new talent, gives us 12% damage reduction whenever we're in a full party. This is good, because there will no longer be leather gear with extra armor. This combined with the SotF change makes it clear that they want us to be sharing gear (to a certain extent) with rogues and kitty druids.
- 12% damage mitigation probably doesn't quite make up for the armor we'll be losing, so Natural Reaction gives us a free 6% dodge - and bonus rage when we do it! This should help in those situations where we're dodging most attacks and therefore not generating much rage. Now whether we dodge or get hit, we'll get rage either way. (This is a small side point, but I'm intrigued by the phrasing of "regenerate 3 rage." Most rage abilities say "generate rage" - why the "re-" here?)
- We have a few new "oh !@#$" buttons, a lack of which (outside of trinkets) has always been a weak point for bear tanks.
- Survival Instincts: cf. Last Stand. Might be a little better for us since we tend to have very large health pools.
- This isn't actually a talent change, but it's well worth noting here: Barkskin will be usable in feral forms. It's a third the mitigation of Shield Wall, but its cooldown is five times shorter; I foresee this getting a lot of use.
- Our 51-point talent, Berserk, is one that I don't think many feral druids will be skipping in Wrath. For tanks, it will provide a quick way to generate gobs of threat, with Mangle hitting multiple targets and being spammable.
- We'll also be able to use consumables in forms. Rejoice!
Of course, we're still stuck at level 70, so we don't have quite as many points to pump into the trees as they're designed for. I see 16 points in Resto as must-haves, so that leaves 45 for Feral. I'll probably be going something like this for a tank spec, but I'm interested to hear your thoughts. Edit: some people are arguing that it's worth going to Berserk anyway, which leads me to something like 0/52/9. I like that a lot better.
We turn now to the other side of Feral: the side that shreds. There isn't as much changed here as on the bear side, talent-wise, although I hear we should be seeing more damage anyway. Part of that will be Savage Roar, which we won't see until 75. But we did have some changed and new talents that will definitely affect cats:
- Primal Precision (new talent). Expertise is always good. The hit cap is easy enough to reach as a cat, but it is nonetheless annoying when those five-point finishers fail to land.
- Feral Charge has been extended with some cat form utility. It's a lot like a kitty Shadowstep now, though without the damage bonus. Should come in handy at least for leveling/grinding, not to mention PvP.
- Although I wouldn't take it for a cat spec at level 70 (due to not having enough points to put in Feral), Rend and Tear will be a must-have at 80. Our targets should be bleeding much of the time from Rip and a now-useful Rake, and who would say no to a 20% increase on our staple damage skill?
- Finally, Berserk has a huge benefit for cat druids too. Again, probably not enough points to put into it right now, but boy will I be loving it at 80.
So given the same 16 points in Resto as I took in my bear spec, I'd go for something along these lines [edited] for a PvE cat. It's surprising how different these talent choices are from the bear build; it seems Blizz really was serious about differentiating the two specs within one tree. I don't like not being able to get down to Berserk, but it's hard to pass up those 2%-damage-per-point talents over in Resto. It'll be a little bit uncomfortable being a feral druid between 3.0.2 and Wrath.

I say drop those two points in brutal impact in your cat build and put them in improved mangle! more stun? whatev!
me, I'm gonna try this for cat:

and this for bear:

I don't feel like OOC is a "must have" bear tanking. Other than at the very beginning of a fight, I'm rarely started for rage.

Don't forget that Bash has also gained an interrupt ability on top of the stun. Reducing that cooldown from 1 min to 30 seconds may very well be worth the 2 TP.
Coen Oct 14th 2008 11:42AM
Bash no longer only stuns the target, it also spell interrupts! This works better on unstunnable (is that a word) targets..
So...you might want to grab it for the reduced CD on bash. 15 seconds off is a 25% reduction, which means 25% more spell interrupts... As a tank I like to be in control of what my target does or does not... ;)

I like it, but i would get rid of rend and tear and add feral instincts and maybe a couple king of the jungle for that immediate threat need.

good points! hadn't considered that. this all boils down to too much stuff with not enough points (for now), eh?

Didn't someone say that in Wrath that dps specs should be able to tank instances before 80? So is it possible to tank in cat-spec?
NeSuKuN Oct 14th 2008 11:06AM
As a temporary measure, I've dropped OOC(leaving only furor in the resto tree until I've get more talent points to spend on that tree) in order to get the new goodies. Other ferals and I agree that it's worth the trade as long as we get those talents again when reaching the new endgame (lv80)
shinken Oct 14th 2008 12:31PM
Why would you drop Omen? you'll lose more dps than gain. There is really no point in picking up the new talents until wrath
Anna Oct 15th 2008 7:32AM
I agree with you here. You can see how I did my talent build for 70 here: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=0ZxGhsfbdceRscuho0x
OOC is a goodish spell however I think dropping it for the others is better at this stage. Realistically, bear tanks generate so much rage that it doesn't matter so much if we get a "free" spell in there once in a while. Especially with these new talents as well, even if you began to get short on rage, you'd soon have it back again.

I went for omen at first and now I'm left with 11 points and resto, and now I'm looking 2 spec in the feral tree, but i realize that i cant get beserk. I want 2 be able 2 Dps and Tank, what do you suggest? should i just copy your spec or ignore beserk.

I have been (over the last week) levelling some classes I have never played before (have just the one 70 a beast-master hunter) they are all caster classes in there 20s and so far the 24 N Elf druid is the most fun.
Is there any advice on a good levelling spec under 3.x? I have been playing with Feral the most so far after finding that Restoration was tougher as a solo low level... Am I right that that is still the best solo levelling spec?
cheers

At its current form I don't think Natural Shapeshifter (or improved) is worth it.
I think I'll be going with this (maybe taking imp Mangle or imp LotP instead of PI, not sure yet). I like it to keep my tank/dps status in tact without having a talent switch.

Agreed. 11 points in Feral is all you need. My tanking spec wont even have Intensity, unless I discover that I start running out of Rage for some reason.
Amjad Oct 14th 2008 11:07AM
Great
Weedkiller Oct 14th 2008 11:09AM
Master Shapeshifter may look great, except I don't see it as 2% damage per point: I see it as less than 1% per point, because you have to take Natural Shapeshifter first which is nigh worthless for anything except maybe pvp. Which means the only benefit to taking those points is to unlock MS, which makes me consider MS a 5 point talent with a trivial side effect. Looking at it that way it becomes much less tempting.
Eliah Hecht Oct 14th 2008 11:11AM
That's a very good point; for some reason it hadn't occurred to me to think of it that way. Still, it's close to 1% damage per point, which is pretty good.
I revised the cat build to include Rend and Tear instead, though, which is probably better. Thanks for pointing this out.
Snarl Oct 14th 2008 11:43AM
I agree. Naturalist seems a better option over the Shapeshifters for a bear build IMHO. That's an actual 10% physical buff vs. 4% with some mana conservation.
My only concern right now is whether Intentsity is worth considering in conjunction with King of the Jungle (and adding Enrage to a rotation). OOC's new version seems nigh on useless to me in a bear build.
For "required" resto talents, I only see 13 atm.
furor->naturalist->intensity
But it's early days yet.
sheepe Oct 14th 2008 1:33PM
Agreed on the shapeshifting talents 4% for 5 points just can't compare to naturalist and other plain +damage talents.
I wouldn't consider intensity to be a required bear talent though, now or in the new patch. Helpful for the very start of pulls, possibly sometimes but not after that.
I definately wouldn't be wanting to be poping enrage mid fight unless fairly overgeared, our armour is already getting dropped alot. Should be ok for rage generation with natural reaction anyway hopefully.
Amorob Oct 14th 2008 11:15AM
Those 16 points are not at all needed for tanking. It seems most pure tanks are taking Berserk over Ooc. OoC is required for dps however.

That cat spec is pure fail. Without rend & tear, mangle spam will get you higher dps than shred.
