Essential addons for Patch 3.0.2 [Updated x6]
Let's take a look at what addons are working for patch 3.0.2. First a simple rule taken from the UI forums post done by Kaydeethree: "Any 'Wrath beta' compatible mod will work in 3.0.2." With that said, there is a long and comprehensive listing of 3.0.2 compatible addons over on WoWWiki. But the fun doesn't end there. The next step is obtaining all those new addons. I've compiled a large set of the essential addons and linked to at least one direct download source after the break. Each download source is either trusted beyond doubt – or tested and confirmed to be virus free.
Finally, you'll want to combine the addons into a nice looking UI. Check out our special edition of Reader UI of the Week for a look at five complete 3.0.2 compatible UIs.
We're posting this list now, and will continue to update it throughout the day. Begin your addon downloads as quickly as possible to avoid hangups later in the day when download servers become overloaded.

- These addons should still be considered beta. While the transition from 2.4.3 -> 3.0.2 will be much smoother than the Burning Crusade transition that occurred two years ago, there will still be problems here and there. Be ready to trouble shoot and go without your favorite addon for a bit.
- Your addons are stored in your World of Warcraft/Interface/Addons folder. Be sure to remove all your old addons before you start updating.
- Some old 2.4.3 addons may still work. However your milage may vary.
- After you have updated your addons, select "Load out of date addons" in the addon selection window, which is accessible while you're at the character selection screen. This may help solve a few things.
- WoWInterface has two great resources up: a very large addon list of their own, and a Patch 3.0 Survival Guide.

I'm going to go ahead and start fresh with this patch. No add-ons, gonna try it vanilla, see what I need and add as it becomes apparant.
My UI's been getting a little out of hand, hopefully updating the minimum functionality of out-of-the-box WoW can help me toss a few to the curb.

It doesn't work...
I too tried, but very soon:
- installed action bar and unit frames addons (wow ones are really awful)
- must do some quest... so lightheaded and tomtom
- instances? need omen (and just grab recount too)
- need to buy/sell stuff on AH... got auctioneer
- I do some bg, so grabbed outfitter to swap my pve/pvp gear
And so on...

I just reinstalled WoW... not planning to go without addons but I figured I'm going to have to redo most of it, might as well get a clean start.

WoWace has shut down file downloads from files.wowace.com
They recommend that you go to curse for all your downloads, and look as if they'll still be hosting a forum for developers and just forwarding things to Curse to host.

Thanks for keeping us up to date on this. It's nice that Wow Insider has the information on WIM (WoW Instant Messenger) since even the wiki doesn't seem to have it listed. It's too bad about Omen being a red though since that's one of if not the most used threat meter out there.

Well, they do kinda have to overhaul it...

You can pick up an Alpha version of Omen over at WoWAce. The latest build was working fine.
Bloodieros Oct 14th 2008 4:10AM
Omen3 (the new version for 3.0.2) can be here: http://www.wowace.com/projects/omen-threat-meter/repositories/wrath/files/

Thanks for the link Bloodieros!

Thanks for the link, normally I wouldn't use an alpha but Omen is just one of those mods I can't do without.

I'm gonna sound egoistic, but i'm not too used to the Ace website:
How the flying does one download the new Omen?
DO WANT :)

This is useful, but not overly. The links provided for each addon go to the dl page but in a lot of cases not to a description of what the addon does. A one-line description on WoW insider would be more useful

Wow, apparently Hunter's Helper has been discontinued which is nice if blizz did a good job with bringing that functionality into the UI but it's still a shock since I've relied on it so long and it's suddenly going away.
Durana Oct 14th 2008 2:55AM
Well, there's a reason why the Hunter helper is being discontinued. The entire pet skill system is being changed!
The Hunter bloggers here have more info at their various columns, but very basically you no longer need ot run out into the wild and tame pets for their skills. Hunter pets will learn their skills automatically as they level. I believe each pet has a Focus Dump skill (claw, bite or smack), Growl, Cower and their family ability. There's also the pet talent trees, but again you can check that up on the hunter columns
Petopia ( http://petopia.brashendeavors.net/ ) has been updated for the patch, so if you want to have a look at what each pet gets you can easily check it out there. :)
Jorelos Oct 14th 2008 4:15AM
I know but I'm still going to miss it, plus part of the fun of the old system was hunting around looking for pets to train with the skills I needed which they've now taken away.
Krick Oct 14th 2008 9:46AM
My goal for the last two weeks was to get my hunter to 70 and collect every trainable pet skill before the patch hit and wiped it all away. After lots of hard work, I dinged 70 on Sunday night and got the last few pet skills I needed shortly after. Gotta catch 'em all!

YAY!!! i love you guys
ReflectedSky Oct 16th 2008 2:12AM
Indeed! Very helpful post.
I would kill to have Bongos back, though...or something which has functionality just like it. Dominos (and pretty much any other bar mod I've tried) just isn't winning my heart.
Auctioneer Suite can bite me too. I want my Classic version for WotLK!! :(

what have you done
:'(

Thanks for this post, I was just lamenting the loss of my work-of-art UI in gchat. :(
Starting completely fresh is a good idea. I did that in the Wrath beta and I got surprising mileage out of the Default UI.
