Many servers not yet up after all
The previous post about the servers coming back online seems to have been slightly premature. Many, if not most servers are still offline, and the current target for bringing them back is 6 PM PST/9 PM EST. Be aware that this target has been pushed back three times since being originally set for 2 PM PST/5 PM EST today, so I wouldn't count on being able to play any time tonight necessarily. And when the realms do come up, I wouldn't expect them to be super-stable; the few realms that are up right now are having all manner of crashes and other difficulties.
That said, I'm can't really be mad at Blizzard for any of this. This is possibly the largest patch in MMO history, as one astute commenter pointed out; it would have been extremely optimistic to expect it to go off without a hitch. We'll be back sooner or later (unless they decide to just leave the servers off until Wrath hits), and we'll have plenty of new toys to play with. In the mean time, why not check out our voluminous coverage of the patch, or our handy all-in-one FAQ?

Well, nevermind that. I was able to log in and tame the Kurkin, but thats about it. By the time I got to Shatt, no one else was moving, and it was shortly followed by a disconnect. At least a later attempt to log in showed me with the Kurken still tamed!
Keyra Oct 14th 2008 10:46PM
You can tame the Kurkin? Hmm....I have a hunter alt on Alliance. I might just have to pay a visit to Bloodmyst!
Gobbledegook Oct 14th 2008 10:52PM
Umm, it's already almost 8pm PST.

Blizzard kinda lied to us.
And when i say kinda i mean they did.
Most of the servers aren't up and the ones that are flipping between online and off.
The character list is still extremely slow and prone to many problems
The only time i did get on, the lag was so bad the latency bar didn't even register it ( I disabled all my old addons so that wasn't a factor)
Currently I am unable to get back on because i get stuck at the loading screen (although the new loading screen graphics are very cool)
skynes Oct 14th 2008 8:22PM
That's not a lie by Blizzard, that's the result of 10'000 players descending upon a single active server to play as their servers aren't active yet :P
One serve goes up, everyone pounces onto it, thus causing it to crash and go back down.
Amaxe Oct 14th 2008 9:31PM
And in the real world we call that very poor planning... perhaps even incompetence... not to account for that
hergen Oct 14th 2008 8:23PM
yeah arthas(pvp) is still not showing up on the realm screen :(
Spirit Oct 14th 2008 8:18PM
Damn, my plan was getting Wrath the night it comes out and playing my ass off, maybe even taking a break from school that day haha. But I doubt I will be able to log in once I install Wrath and upgrade my account, probably will be lots more waiting...

If you were around for burning crusade, you'd know that this happened with 2.0 as well. Then the BC launch was pretty much flawless.
Amaxe Oct 14th 2008 8:42PM
Not really... with BC, there was a period of like 2 days when each server was offline with hardware upgrades, but the other servers were up (they did it in rotation), and afterwards it worked pretty smooth.
Some of our servers haven't even come on line yet... and then we get our crash cycle
OrNaC Oct 14th 2008 11:34PM
tell me about it. i even reserved a copy months in advance, that was a wasted $5.....smh

And my mounts and 38/41 pets are gone. Yay for horrible patch practices by Blizzard. (Yes I know about the mount and pet panel. They were there and got deleted when the server crashed.)
Art Oct 14th 2008 8:21PM
Mine too. I'm not gonna be able to relax until all those pets and mounts get restored.
Nick Oct 14th 2008 8:44PM
They better get to restoring fast, I lost everything on 5 70s and my 66 hunter. Blizzard fails hardcore at software upgrades...
verenov Oct 14th 2008 9:38PM
Really? Have ya attempted to speak with a stable master? According to patch notes this is where we will be able to go and grab any lost mounts/pets...
Unrelated to your post, but people are so impatient. One person complaining that he pays a whopping $15 per month, and he *demands* satisfaction. So, would you like that 50 cents back via mail? I mean, that's literally the amount we're losing in a 30-day month (if not allowed to play for a full day). People, grow up. And, regarding the person that said that his servers service 11+ million people/citizens at his job? Yeah, and I'm sure that the software your company uses is so much more taxing than a 3D graphical interface game, using streaming upload/download at the rate that WoW requires/uses...sure it does.

@verenov
I used to work for a cable company ISP w/3.5 mil subscribers.
You have no idea how bad it can be. They're paying 34.95/mo. for service, and they had a 4 hour outage. from 2 am to 6 am. They demand a full month's credit because of it. We give them he exact credit for how long they were out. BTW, that's just a hair under 20 cents.
People can be jerks about service outages. Nothing unusual here.

ive done more work around the house tonite than in the last three weeks combined!!!
VSUReaper Oct 14th 2008 8:29PM
Thats a lil sad....
Osi Oct 14th 2008 8:19PM
Ghostlands came up, but nobody can log into it yet. haha.
Nick Oct 14th 2008 8:20PM
figures none of my realms are up, except the one with a lowbie rogue I created way back in the day and never played.
and I can't get chat to work, even with addons turned off, they must have updated chat and it's really confusing since I can't ask anyone for help since I can't see what's typed
