Patch 3.0.2 guide to Exotic Pets
If you're a hunter, you're probably pretty excited about the new talents we're getting in Patch 3.0.2, not the least of which is the new Beast Mastery talent, appropriately enough called Beast Mastery. It gives you 4 extra talent points, and enables you to tame "exotic" pets that would otherwise be beyond your reach. But which exotic pet is right for you? Where can they be tamed? Are they really better than the regular pets?
There are seven exotic pets in all, but only five of them are available to us now:
The Rhino and the Spirit Beast will only be available in Northrend once the expansion actually arrives next month. For now, we have the selection of exotic beasts that would become available to a level 60 hunter upon first clicking that 51st talent point, and reaching the pinnacle of his or her mastery of beasts. These pets are not necessarily set in stone, of course, and they will change a bit over the next month or so, though how much is still anyone's guess.
So what makes each of these pets special? Let's have a look.

Silithid aren't exotic pets, I believe.

Silithids are exotic pets, i think you are thinking of ravagers, but can see how you would mistake it from the picture show. looks kinda similar

The first thing I did was get my Worm (I love the worms and can't wait for the wrath ones). But I had to go threw Un Goru to get to where they are so I also picked up a Devilsaur. I did my Neatherwing dailies with him and though he had problems with keeping aggro, he did really well for a 65 and I got him a few levels. I can't wait to see what he's like at 70!

Oh i see my mistake. *wasps* are non exotic, but some are silithid wasps.

For DPS sake, would perhaps that point be better spent elsewhere, in the MM tree?
Michael Oct 15th 2008 10:48PM
At the moment, yes. Cats are very good DPS. Improved Tracking and Mortal Shots are both better options.

OK really, I did not reply to my own question! ;)
Carefull Aim seems like it should be a nice damage booster too.
Xino Oct 16th 2008 12:39AM
Agreed, until they change them exotic pets are just vanity pets.

The first thing they need to fix is the damn stomping that the pets do. It's utterly stupid and annoying. It would be ok if it were during a 'sprint' or 'charge' move but dozens of them running around the capital cities is hopeless.

Really? I've seen people running around with Kurkens. Oddly they cause an earthquake effect when they run near you.

Kurken IS a core hound =P
Binkel Oct 16th 2008 1:25AM
Oh man those HORRIBLE pets that cause the earthquake NEED TO BE CHANGED! While trying to browse the auction house, i could hardly stand to look at my screen because it kept making me feel sick!
Axolotl Oct 16th 2008 2:30AM
... Must ... level ... hunter ... alt ... to make every alliance player sick that's wathing the screen while in my alts proximity ... >:-)
Redem Oct 16th 2008 5:13AM
The white corehound can be tamed at lvl 12 or something like that. Assuming you can survive that long. The wonderful earthquake effect can be yours very very quickly!

Assuming, of course, that you can manage to pick up the 51-point Beast Mastery talent at level 12. But hey, if you can, more power to you.

I actually had to stop playing after putting up auctions today. Too much bouncing. At least let us turn the pet effects off client side or something... I don't play fpses for a reason. :P

Does anyone know, after you spec beast mastery and tame an exotic pet, if you respec, do you lose the pet and the extra points?
Redem Oct 16th 2008 5:49AM
You keep the pet, and lose the extra points. But you cannot use the pet, so that stable slot is lost.
Scott Oct 16th 2008 3:35AM
Well in the PTR if you respec'd while an exotic pet is your current pet it would vanish and when you try to summon a pet it wont let you! Also you cant get your exotic pets out of the stable. So make sure you switch to a non exotic pet when respeccing.

I think the exotic pets talent is a great idea, but I was disappointed that the talent doesn't add the ability to tame ALL beast-type enemies that are currently untameable.
Specifically, I always thought it would be totally sweet to tame one of those black stags from northern Ashenvale.
