Patch 3.0.2 primer for Holy Paladins

Good for you. Even though Patch 3.0.2 had a few hiccups, most of the important class changes made it through. I had to delete a lot of my macros and change a few. For one thing, Judgement and a Seal can no longer be cast within the same macro. This is because Seals aren't consumed by Judgements anymore, so they now share the same GCD. If you have macros for your Blessings of Freedom, Protection, and Sacrifice, you should edit them to cast Hands instead of Blessings. Lots of little things. I'll probably talk about that in The Light and How to Swing It. For now, we'll take a look at the talent trees and how we'll settle into the 3.0.2 world.
HolyA lot of people have been saying that Holy sucks now. Let me quash that idea before it gets blown out of proportion. Yes, Holy didn't get as much love as Protection or Retribution and yes, it still needs a little more tweaking. The developers admitted as much during the past weekend at BlizzCon. That said, Holy can heal incredibly well, better than any other class with single targets. Blizzard has said that they're looking into mobility and multiple targets, but even then Holy in its current state has a few tricks up its sleeve.
On the first tier, we get buffs right away as Spiritual Focus is moved up with a change in wording to reflect the new pushback mechanics. If we're looking at healing, we definitely want five points in that. There's the new Seals of the Pure, which is really a greatly buffed Improved Seal of Righteousness. While it's a greatly buffed talent, it's important to note that virtually all the Seals got a massive coefficient nerf. We can skip this one for now.
More buffs come in the form of a more accessible Healing Light, which was moved up unchanged to the second tier from the third. Divine Intellect was moved down from the first tier but now grants a 15% Intellect bonus. Both talents are essential for a healing build, so we're spending eight points here. Divine Intellect will yield dividends later on. Unyielding Faith was also moved up to this tier, reworked to reduce the durations of Fear and Disorient effects instead of conferring resistance. Two points here if you want to PvP.
Aura Mastery on tier three wasn't buffed in itself, but now becomes a more useful talent because of the change to Auras making it a raidwide effect. For a mere one point, it's an excellent investment. Improved Lay on Hands on the same tier had it's armor bonus buffed to 50%, and the base spell was improved greatly, as well. With a mere 20 minute cooldown and no longer draining any mana, it becomes a clutch spell in any situation. We'll drop two points here because a no-strings-attached uh-oh button every 16 minutes is freakishly awesome. Illumination was moved up to tier three, making it more accessible with the same effect. This is effectively a buff and five points here is mandatory.
On tier four we have Improved Concentration Aura and Improved Blessing of Wisdom. My rule of thumb is if I PvP more, I'd take three points in the former. For raiding, I prefer Improved Blessing of Wisdom because it's more useful and I hate having my Blessings overwritten by someone else. Why not take both? Because we want to conserve points going deeper into the tree but we'll need to open up the next tiers.
Divine Favor is the next mandatory spell, resting on tier five. Paladin healing relies on crit and this is the one controlled crit we've got. Speaking of crits, there's Sanctified Light right beside Divine Favor, and we'll want to put three points here, too. We'll skip Blessed Hands and Pure of Heart on this tier although both are excellent PvP abilities. See how things tend to bloat if you try too many things at once?
We'll take a second to note that Pure of Heart has been changed to duration reduction, which is in line with the move away from resistance. This means halved durations on Curse of Tongues or Exhaustion. Sounds cool, right? Well, no. Not really. Those curses don't have a cooldown. A good Warlock will have them right back on you as soon as they wear off. We don't need reduced durations on Diseases because we can Cleanse them, anyway. I mean, thanks for the mechanics change, Blizzard, but it doesn't really do us any good.

I am curious as to what others think about the flash of light glyph that makes it HoT? Is this going to be a benefit for Holy Pallys or is it going to just hurt the flash spell?
Hammer Oct 16th 2008 9:23AM
I used it last night and it was still hitting pretty hard on the inital heal due to the change from light being added into the spell. I have decent gear with around 1250 spellpower and it was still hitting around 1800 on the inital heal. Now will this work if your the MT healer? not sure but I am going to try it out and see if I like it. It is great for PvP and with the lowered CD to shock you just have to use that a bit more in yoru rotation.

"Now that servers are starting to go back up online"... I never thought I would see that at 7pm the day AFTER patch day (yes my realm is down atm)

I spent 30min as Holy and i already want to go back to Ret.
Bacon is still pretty crappy, doesn't really help in pvp (probably more so in arena) since players are flying around everywhere in bgs.

Beacon of light is great! Put it on a tank and heal the rest of the tanks without having to worry about him until he gets super hard. I think it's a very usefull spell for Healadins. Last night in BT I was top Healer when before I would be 3-4th behind the COH priests and Resto druids.

Did a random 2s and got a Holy Paladin.
it was LOL, Spriest + Warlock, Holy Paladin died in no time at all
and this was with me as ret, did a ton of damage to the other players but it just wasnt enough for the fact that Holy Paladins just suck so much.

I put some of my points into the improved kings... Really helps boosting your tanks stats... It almost made it bearable when I had to heal several tanks in H ramps that had a lot less than 490 in Def.

Has anyone tried Glyph of Flash of Light with Sheath of Light? Do they stack?
Glyphs seem to be vitally important to the Holy paladin. More so than almost any other class/build combination.
Caronome Oct 16th 2008 2:08PM
I also really need to know this. If it stacks, it is great. If not, then for a FoL-spam on MT like myself it would be awful; much worse than empty glyph socket.

I think the new Holy changes are great and cannot wait to level as Holy and heal 5 mans all the while.
Also, here's a nice glyph you might not have known about: http://www.wowhead.com/?item=41106#created-by
Should help immensely with dots and aoe damage. Also, from the WoWhead comments, it seems the 10% you heal to other targets can crit as well.

woops...
Im specced as Holy 43/Ret 18 and I am finding the changes are awesome!! My DPS is now incredible - at least compared to where I was, I managed to grind out the netherstorm dailies last night in half the time it would normally take, my mana efficeny is also unbelieveable.
Previously I would not have been able to solo level 70 elites with out burnign long term cooldowns and burnign pots but now I can handle 70s easily and even managed to down a level 72 elite.
My healing has not declined and in fact has noticable improved with the ret talents adding another 8% (11% to my crit chances - my unbuffed holy crit is 39%, making a 45% crit chance for Holy light and 48% Holy shock (on judged targets) - meaning that Illumination is proccing all the time.
I always felt viable in raids and instances but found anything outside an instance was a chore - no longer!!
this is all yunny goodness for Holy Pallys
Celladin Oct 15th 2008 11:59PM
Well there is a lot of crazy going on here, but without getting your QQ on, what do you all feel about being able to quest as a healadin?
I'm currently 65 and in no rush to hit 70 before WotLK, so I will be trying the new heal spec to get a feel for it. However, I would like to hear from some beta-peeps
I know that for 5mans you can pretty much retadin heal but that doesn't sit well with me, if i'm going to heal I like to do it right

Hmm I think the post above mine answered my question...
Vapori @ Frostmane Oct 16th 2008 3:02AM
Well, figured I'd chime in here.
Quickly, about my character. Sunwell geared Paladin, Haste Stacked. We've been on KJ for a little while now. Every trash pull, Shamans or COH Priests would dominate the healing meters. On several boss fights — it was tough to really place high on the meters...I could dish out a shit load of HPS and keep my tank alive with ease however I knew my place was to heal my MT and that's it.
So heres comes 3.0, I spec'd for Imp HS, BOL and JOP. We had our first Sunwell raid since 3.0 hit.
Not to brag — I'm a very solid healer. I know what I'm doing. I know the fights in and out however I did not expect to beat out all of the other healers. My HPS has skyrocketed.
Beacon of Light and Glyph of Holy Light definitely improved my HPS.
I've got to admit, I'm very happy with the way Holy turned out.
Filmuir Oct 16th 2008 6:08AM
Were you casting judgement of light on mobs? We've done a raid were the top 3 healers were pallys....the third guy was ret and I can assure you we have some damn good resto druids in the raid, so it wasnt because the other healers suck.
Axolotl Oct 16th 2008 4:10AM
Allright, I'll let the numbercrunchers do their work first, before I might consider speccing Shockadin (Holy/Ret) again.
For now, I'll wait for the Retribution Primer, I've been hearing they're a bit OP to those that aren't used to having to actually mind a paladin when it's there (yup, those people who where just using the /laugh emote while they killed us with ease)
Clinto Oct 16th 2008 6:36AM
Yes our HPS has gone up and YES we still have mobility issues, but mobility has always been an issue. We have been given an opportunity to level while Holy (and actually be effective). I mean you really have to love your Holy Pally if you haven't bought the scrubadub PvP starter kit/set and went Ret for a day. This is our Patch, this is our Expansion, I think that the Pally community at large (like other classes) are still a little in the dark in regards to the 'ol cookie cutter spec or the glyphs to use, so everyone goes in defense mode.
on a side note: I say if anyone LoLHoly, let the group bandage heal or watch them die first
