Dinner with the multiboxers
I wish I'd been invited to this at BlizzCon -- TGDaily sat down with a group of multiboxers last weekend, and lived to tell the tale. I don't think multiboxers are the most hated people in the game (Paladins and Warlocks probably get to trade off that title), but it's true that just like twinks, they can draw some ire. Blizzard has given them a free pass in the game (most likely because they're spending ungodly amounts of money keeping up their fleets of characters), but apparently multiboxers are just people. People willing to shell out lots of money and time on overpowering themselves inside a game. And that's really where the issue lies -- most of these people aren't no-lifers, they're just folks with money to burn that want to trounce a battleground all by themselves or run Karazhan solo. But at the same time, there is a sense of superiority that comes across -- they brag (under their breath in a crowded restaurant) that they can beat anyone else's player, and they claim that "other people can only see a quarter of the game," which just patently isn't true. This is a generalization I'm making, of course, but playing 10 characters by yourself seems to give an inflated sense of self-worth in the game (after all, aren't you 10 times better than someone playing with just one character?) and that could be the reason that multiboxers have the reputation they do.
Let's break up that generalization a bit: not everyone who multiboxes spends tons of money on it (some people use a spouse's or other family member's account), and obviously not everyone who multiboxes is as smug as the people at this dinner sound. Some people do it just to mix up the game a bit, and there's nothing wrong with that. The second you start thinking, however, that you're a better player than someone else just because you run five accounts by yourself, then you're off into "inflated sense of self-worth" territory.
But for better or worse, Blizzard has approved this behavior -- if you have the money to spend on multiple accounts, there's apparently no limit as to how many you can have. Just like twinking, players who choose to play the game as it's traditionally designed may not like it much, but with Blizzard OK with it, multiboxing is here to stay.

But how do you kill that which has no life?
peagle Oct 16th 2008 5:02PM
Bored of people regurgitating that line, make up something funny on your own next time.
Seedcake Oct 16th 2008 5:18PM
Hey, I laughed.
Peagle probably just needs to stop frequenting places where regurgitating people hang out. :3
Xtyle Oct 16th 2008 5:25PM
Don't you mean...
"How do you kill THOSE who have 9 lives?"
Ok... so it was funnier in my head!
Honestly though, I tend to agree... Multiboxing, while borderline 'unfair' because they get an upper hand by the coordinated focused fire... they work hard to do this. They are sittin' at their desks managing all these (payed) accounts. I've done up to 3boxing. It was hard enough to manage, let alone coordinate tanks, healers, AND dps... that's quite insane. For the showoff raids, they still have to trigger the heals... they still have to worth the threat... they still have to provide stable dps and react to changes. It's not a free ride, by any means.
I like to laugh at it from this perspective. These players tend to be good players. They care enough about setting their characters up to perform. And then think about it this way... When was the last time you were lookin' for pug members for a run and were contacted by a multiboxer? I'd rather pug with a multiboxer than the stereotypical huntard or guild-hoppin', ninjalooter.
Their impact might be high profile, but it's really low impact. Please don't hate 'em for havin' fun durring this lul period. They're still playin' the same game as everyone else.

"seems to give an inflated sense of self-worth in the game"
Yea, I agree. Most of them are just plain stupid egomanial jerks.
I pity those fools.

For the sake of clarity.... Let me compare the ORIGINAL article from which this "news" was written, to the author's interpretation.
ORIGINAL (TGDaily):
"Another joked, “Our characters can beat your characters,” as he looked across the restaurant at other Blizzcon attendees."
http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/39729/98/
THIS WoWInsider Post:
"they brag (under their breath in a crowded restaurant) that they can beat anyone else's player"
Apparently a joke from one WoW player to another sitting in a restaurant a couple blocks from Blizzcon makes ALL multiboxers stuck up braggarts.
Nice way to bend the story towards your own view, though. Anyone who wasn't lazy enough to skip the source and forget to read the original TGDaily article from someone who was actually AT the dinner might end up believing your little agenda.
IMO -- make your own opinions, readers. This is an opinionated post, sure -- but it's not an opinion based on any sort of facts.

So, the point of your artical was what? YOU don't like multiboxers? You feel multiboxers need a 'telling off' or a warning? You're jealous? Get a grip.
Starie Oct 16th 2008 3:53PM
He linked an article and gave his opinions about the subject. This *is* a blog, you know. You sound angry. You get a grip.
Verit Oct 16th 2008 3:48PM
I feel for them. In my multi-boxing adventures I've been accused/reported of botting, and reported for multi-boxing (or at least told I've been reported for that).
Nothing has ever come of it. Its ironic too - if they asked nicely I'd invite them in my group and help them kill stuff as well.
Wow isn't very social is it?
Harmeister Oct 16th 2008 3:50PM
Maybe not, but I saw a Night Elf Mohawk in SW the other day and thought to myself, wow, there's Mr.T right now.
FoxOfWar Oct 16th 2008 3:50PM
*shrugs*
Well, I don't PvP, so I've never had my BG/Arena ruined by them.
But really, if people want to spend that much of their money on this game and Blizz allows it, why not? I personally would never multibox(I have enough things to keep track of playing only one character, thank you very much). Not only that, but spending that much on a single game is stupid IMO. Even when the game is as good as WoW *sheepish grin* - But I don't oppose multiboxers. They are free to do what they want. ;P

When you post bitter, agenda driven articles like this you always come out looking worse than the people you attempt to defame. This isn't news and doesn't belong on this site.

What is the difference between a multiboxer and 5 friends that get together in the same room for a LAN party type of deal all the time?
I honestly hate it when WoW Insider does articles on multiboxers because your obvious hatred of them just taints anything we could possibly get out of the article.
Please just don't do the articles anymore, we get it, you hate multiboxers, now let's move to a topic that you aren't going to QQ about.
