Defensive pets a little more jumpy
A guildie of mine discovered this last night, and reader Theronis sent us a note today about it -- after patch 3.0.2, defensive pets act a little differently. Before the patch, they would only attack an enemy automatically if they attacked you first, which made things a little tough with casters -- pets in defensive mode wouldn't actually move to attack until the first spell actually hit you. But after the patch, pets are a little bit quicker: now, they'll move to attack as soon as you attack something, so you won't have to wait around until you get hit before your pet springs into action. However, this can be a drawback as well -- while Theronis says it's a good change and that his pets are smarter, my guildie had a problem: whenever he wanted to pull one mob out of a group, the pet would run in and pull them all. Anything you attack will get pounced on by your pet in defensive, and that might bring some unintended adds along for the ride.
Personally, I always keep my pets in passive -- it only takes a split second to hit CTRL-1 to send them attacking, and I can much better control, both soloing and in instances, what my pet is up to at any given moment. It can hurt my DPS a bit if I'm not careful (since I'm a BM Hunter, my pet is a big part of my DPS, so if I forget to send him, that's a bigger loss), but the tradeoff is that I can be careful about pulling adds and I have control of my pet all the time. If the "smarter" defensive works great for you, good, but if you find your pet springing in a little too early, you might try switching back to passive and just staying there most of the time.

I discovered this while doing the Blood for Blood daily quest at the Throne of Kil'jaeden where you turn the elite Felbloods into emaciated ones. My pet started attacking as soon as the draining effect began.
Personally, I prefer the way defensive acted previously.

I agree with you. Passive in all instances but defensive when questing. I had the option of holding the pet if I was certain of killing a mob, then sending him if it got dicey or I was attacked. I'm not certain I like this change.
I do like the attack all mobs feature when in an instance. I can be burning down a mob and know that the bear is on something without me having to send him back into battle.
I"ll adapt to the changes. I always have. It's nice to hear someone else say, "Hey I liked it the way it was before."

The Problem with passive stance is your pet won't defend itself if it gets attacked.
I added /petdefensive to my pet attack macro and created a pet recall macro:
/petfollow
/petpassive
an imperfect fix but its something.

Forgot to mention. You can get around it for now by putting the abilities you do not want to be on autocast on the pet bar and they will keep their status, while those in your spellbook and not on the bar will be subject to mysteriously being on again.

I noticed the same issue with Warlock Pets, as soon as I cast a Spell, Voidwalker went ahead for the kill, useful for shooting DOTs before you pull Aggro fully, but yes it is definitely an issue in regards to multi-mob pulls if you are not careful.

I've noticed this happening not *just* when I attack - I was messing around outside Orgrimmar and trying out the new Disengage, and noticed that my pet would charge in and attack the moment I leapt back.

Rule number one of PvE as a Hunter/Warlock:
Put your pet on passive.

I noticed the pet rushing in on attack as well. It's annoying when I use my 'pull' macro (/cast arcane shot 1, /stopcasting) because he'll go charging in before the target has a chance to move away from the area I'm trying to pull it from.
I've also started to get a single autoshot along with my arcane, which can make handing aggro to my pet tricky when it crits.

I really like the pet's new defensive abilities. As a 'clicker' it makes things go a lot faster for me. If you are having issues with this, all you have to do is put your pet on 'passive' it's that simple.
Everytime I go into a Heroic or Raid, I instantly put my pet on passive and turn growl off.
There is one drawback with this new ability, however.
Once in a Heroic with my guild, while on passive my pet charged a target after I applied -Hunter's Mark-. My fellow guildies reacted with "WTF, Dekky?" So Yes. This new pet ability is still pretty buggy so be careful!

Stop defending the Hunter Nerf.
Yes there are idiots that casue wipes wiht bad pet mode choices... BUT there are those of us that use defensive quite effectively even in dungeons (no pet caused wipes in 2 years) Sure I use passive when its dicey, but I prefer the fact that my pet wont be running at me with adds once its mark dies and I'm busy. It means I dont have to constanly switch targets and pet attack while doing jump shots to make sure the pet is paying attention and not dragging the world behind me.
Those that use passive constanly won't notice the change those that like the change should learn to use the pet attack button BEFORE shooting it will make pet tanking much more effective or write a two line macro
The change also means in PVP the pet is either passive or running off attacking your target. Not protecting you from stun locking rogues.
Yep good job support the NERF as if hunters need to be nerfed against Rogues lol.
BLizz give us the option to switch it off or remove it. I liked my pet, now he is this docile slug that just wants to sit on my lap.
I'm gonna to just go roll a palidan till it changes back.
