Stuff of legends: Old Ironjaw
Now that the race of achievements has officially begun, players are going to great lengths to rack up some points. Some achievements are dead-easy, while others are going to take some work.
Enter the fabled fish of Ironforge, stage left. [Old Ironjaw] is spoken of only in whispers, deep in the dwarven taverns. Rumors speculate that he is uncatchable, but this will not deter you. After all, you rival the legendary Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme with your fishing prowess.
Getting down to business, it is important to set out prepared. If you are a member of the Alliance, all you will need to do is cast your rod into either the waters of the Mystic Ward or the Forlorn Cavern in Ironforge, and expect to be there for awhile. Don't worry about your actual fishing level; skill is for chumps.
For the Horde, the achievement Old Ironjaw will be much more difficult. Preparation will require the affectation of humility. You must accept that you will die and that you will probably have to grovel. Try donning your best fishing or fancy holiday garb to appear as harmless as possible.
I recommend entering Ironforge through the front gates in order to minimize the Alliance buzz about your Hordely presence. Taking the tram means surviving through two cities, and the bored players in Trade chat will call you out. Make sure to choose a time of day that is quite deserted; for example, early in the morning when the children are at school.
Once you've entered, perhaps under the cover of stealth or an [Orb of Deception], quickly duck down onto the grates above the lava to avoid being seen. Kill any guards that follow you, and rest up. You only need to camouflage for a couple of seconds.
Run up the ramp into the main city and make a beeline for the Forlorn Cavern. If you die along the way, that's okay. It is better if no one sees where you're really going.
Once there, jump into the water and let yourself sink. Here is where water breathing potions will come in handy. When you're certain people have stopped bothering with you, walk to the back of the water body and sit down. Only the tip of your head and your name will appear above water, unless you are a Tauren. Most people will ride by and not even look over. Start fishing!
The estimated drop rate on this fellow is approximately 1 in 100 catches, so if your skill is very low, you might want some lures. Also keep in mind that this is an average. Many players will fish up hundreds of low-level fish before finding this sucker.
Dealing with the Alliance:
Should your paths cross with a member of the opposing faction, try to resist the urge to make rude gestures. This will only result in all of Ironforge coming and kicking you soundly. While this might sound fun to some players, it will negate all of your efforts to fish peacefully. Try hugging them; you'd be surprised how far a little lovin' can go.

Bears mentioning that the guards you so flippantly suggest we kill are now 75.
Mad Cow Oct 17th 2008 3:37PM
Amanda obviously hasn't tried. And if you haven't done this prior to the patch ... I laugh at you and suggest you do it naked because you will get aggro and you will die ... many many many many times before you are able to get Old Ironjaw.
Took me 1590 catches ... prior to patch (Tauren Druid). I've been to IronForge since ... good effin luck at 70. Minimum death count for stealth classes will be two. The guards that see invis will aggro from Zimbabwe ... enjoy!

Agree with Mad Cow. I did this a day before the patch hit, on my tauren hunter. I did it in the wee hours of the morning, with one eye on my Track Humanoid minimap. Rode in through the front gate without aggroing guards, and feigned death when a pat headed my way. (On an amusing side note, a gnome player passed by, looked at my feigned corpse, and moved on... didn't know FD worked on players too.... lol).
Long story short, I tried the same trick in Stormwind after the patch, and with their increased levels, the guards don't quite fall for FD anymore.

I stated plainly that you are going to die many times. However, the guards are not as difficult to kill despite their level as you would think, because of class buffs in the recent patch.

@ Mad Cow: Yes, actually, I did this achievement already, along with The Fishing Diplomat.

as a forsaken, i threw those nagrand cherries out as soon as I got them.. and I've been saving those water walking potions rewarded from the fishing daily.. (I never can seem to keep enough, and I'm sick of getting FISHING HOOKS as a reward even though they've given me 10 (yes, ten) fishing hats as rewards.. zero crockolisks..
I love the WoWInsider focus on fishing lately, my guildmates thought I was crazy for leveling fishing as I leveled my toon (every 10 levels) - but they didn't seem to mind when I was fishing them up some Well Fed buffs =)
I hope the alliance on my server play nice, because if they don't, I think I'll be parking my rogue in Org just to pay 'em back..

To gank is human, to escalate is divine.
Bootsanator Oct 17th 2008 6:13PM
So it's YOU that's the reason I haven't gotten a fishing hat yet!
I'll trade you all 5 of my gold wedding rings for one of your fishing hats ;)

Skreed is correct, it's going to be difficult to kill the guards unless you're level 73+, so it might be best to just ride on entirely. You might consider riding to the tram, entering the instance to clear the guards back, and then re-entering Ironforge with a few fewer guards.
Further, make your entrance as innocuous as possible. Stay in the low grate areas to avoid suspicion, and head for larger areas such as the Magic Quarter to avoid as many guards as possible. Worst case scenario, leave your gear in the bank, make a mad rush for the lake, and either die or drown there and log out for ten minutes or more. By then, most players will have given up or moved on, and you can keep your head low.

Woolwort Oct 17th 2008 3:20PM

pungkow Oct 17th 2008 3:30PM
I got extremely lucky, and during the queue of a single AV battleground (which was roughly 10 minutes), I leveled up my fishing from 260-265, and caught old Ironjaw. This was the first time I'd ever fished in IF. It was about 2 weeks ago. I'll be heading to Org soon to see if my luck comes with me :)
chrondon Oct 17th 2008 3:31PM
OH MY GOD!!! How many fishing posts are you going to do? ffs it feels like this has become WowFishingInsider.
Ted Oct 17th 2008 3:42PM
And I loves it, I needs it, my precious.....fishing
Ericrulezz Oct 17th 2008 3:44PM
I am on the horde i caught Old Ironjaw after about 250 fish. I got extremely lucky if you ask me lol. I was Funny hiding from the alliance when they came to fish.
Xandee Oct 17th 2008 3:49PM
I laughed when I caught that old fish in the Forlorn Cavern in IF. I had no idea that it was an achievement until I copied my priest to the PTR. rofl And here I was just going to d/e or delete the old guy.
Delenn Oct 17th 2008 3:49PM
FYI, you can also fish in the lava surrounding the Great Forge, right in the middle of Ironforge. It doesn't make a lot of sense, but it is definitely possible - I leveled my fishing from 250 to 300 there only a few nights ago. :)
Matt Oct 17th 2008 6:08PM
I fished ironjaw in the IF lava. As horde you can usually find a decent spot between the pillar and the wheel (not the side with the flight master) where most alliance can't see you. You occasionally get a hunter or druid that catches you on radar (use camo elixir to prevent this).
Also it might be possible to water walk on the lava if you have a way to avoid the initial touch damage (similar to how you can solo the lurker below achievement) but I don't know for sure if this is the case
Cyber_Elvis Oct 17th 2008 4:13PM
That picture creeps me out. O.o
Rock Oct 17th 2008 4:04PM
I tyred to get this guy before the patch, but after about six total hours I gave up.
